Book excerpt: How can such a bright future be so full of darkness? Beautiful young Charity Freestone has it all: the love of a good man, the revelation of her remarkable identity, and her family reunited after their spectacular battle with the Sons of the Crystal Mind. However, at her moment of triumph Charity is tricked into joining the mysterious New Form Enterprise, whose harsh regime seems designed to break her. Before she can learn their strange purpose, a shocking betrayal brings unique and terrifying freedom. Cut off from its advanced technology, Charity is hunted through war-torn, subterranean Diamond City by an enemy who is always closer than she thinks. As she struggles to make sense of her inhumanly ruthless pursuers, Charity must confront her own complicity in the nightmare that engulfs her. And when she does, she discovers there are far worse places than the dreaded Outer Spheres. Book Two of Andrew Wallace’s viscerally thrilling Diamond Roads science fiction series, The Outer Spheres takes extraordinary heroine Charity Freestone into even stranger and more disturbing territory. The novel threads bleeding-edge science through a fearsomely-wrought war story to explore the unimaginable outcomes of our most terrifying decisions. Blending the vast and eerie scale of Peter F Hamilton’s The Reality Dysfunction with the originality and political insight of Anne Leckie’s Ancilliary Justice, The Outer Spheres forges a unique vision of fear and wonder. Diamond Roads is fast becoming a whole new mythology, exploring the way things are against a wildly-imagined backdrop of how they might turn out. To see if Charity survives, and whether she can be truly free of her pursuers and her own demons, buy the book now. Download or read book Fundamentals of Amorphous Solids written by Zbigniew H. Stachurski and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-03-09 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long awaited, this textbook fills the gap for convincing concepts to describe amorphous solids. Adopting a unique approach, the author develops a framework that lays the foundations for a theory of amorphousness. He unravels the scientific mysteries surrounding the topic, replacing rather vague notions of amorphous materials as disordered crystalline solids with the well-founded concept of ideal amorphous solids. A classification of amorphous materials into inorganic glasses, organic glasses, glassy metallic alloys, and thin films sets the scene for the development of the model of ideal amorphous solids, based on topology- and statistics-governed rules of three-dimensional sphere packing, which leads to structures with no short, mid or long-range order. This general model is then concretized to the description of specific compounds in the four fundamental classes of amorphous solids, as well as amorphous polyethylene and poly(methyl)methacrylate, emphasizing its versatility and descriptive power. Finally, he includes example applications to indicate the abundance of amorphous materials in modern-day technology, thus illustrating the importance of a better understanding of their structure and properties. Equally ideal as supplementary reading in courses on crystallography, mineralogy, solid state physics, and materials science where amorphous materials have played only a minor role until now.
Download or read book Mathematical Methods written by Sadri Hassani and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-08 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended to follow the usual introductory physics courses, this book has the unique feature of addressing the mathematical needs of sophomores and juniors in physics, engineering and other related fields. Many original, lucid, and relevant examples from the physical sciences, problems at the ends of chapters, and boxes to emphasize important concepts help guide the student through the material. Beginning with reviews of vector algebra and differential and integral calculus, the book continues with infinite series, vector analysis, complex algebra and analysis, ordinary and partial differential equations. Discussions of numerical analysis, nonlinear dynamics and chaos, and the Dirac delta function provide an introduction to modern topics in mathematical physics. This new edition has been made more user-friendly through organization into convenient, shorter chapters. Also, it includes an entirely new section on Probability and plenty of new material on tensors and integral transforms.

Download or read book Electronic Structure of Polymers and Molecular Crystals written by Jean-Marie André and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Electronic Structure of Polymers and Molecular Crystals" was held at the Facultes Universi taires de Namur (F.U.N.) from September 1st till September 14th, 1974. We wish to express our appreciation to the NATO Scientific Affairs Division whose generous support made this Institute possible and to the Facultes Universitaires de Namur and the Societe Chimique de Belgique which provided fellowships and travel grants to a number of students. This volume contains the main lectures about the basic principles of the field and about different recent developments of the theory of the electronic structure of polymers and molecular crystals. The school started with the presentation of the basic SCF-LCAO theory of the electronic structure of periodic polymers and molecular crystals (contributions by Ladik, Andre & Delhalle) showing how a combination of quantum chemical and solid state physical methods can provide band structures for these systems. The numerical aspects of these calculations were also discussed. Lectures by Mahan have shown how optical properties of molecular crystals can be interpreted on the basis of the exciton theory. Little has reviewed the present status of the hypothesis about excitonic superconductivity and the different approaches to synthesize a superconductive polymer. McCubbin in his first series of lectures has given a very precise group theoretical treatment of the symmetry properties of polymers. Atkins' lectures have covered both the theoretical aspects of X-ray structure determination and its application to different polymers.
Download or read book Transient Magnetic Fields written by Neil R. Sheeley, Jr. and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an original study aimed at understanding how vacuum magnetic fields change with time. Specifically, it describes the waves that radiate from a sphere when the electric current on its surface is turned on or off, either suddenly, gradually, or periodically. Numerical simulations are an invaluable source of information about this and related subjects, but they are often more difficult to interpret than exact, closed-form solutions that can easily be applied to a variety of situations. Thus, the objective here is to obtain an exact solution of Maxwell’s equations in closed form—something simple, yet rigorous, which can be used as a model for understanding transient magnetic fields in more complicated situations. The work therefore stands as a self-contained solution of Maxwell’s equations for an electric current wrapped around the surface of a sphere. This study assumes a strong background in electromagnetism or a related research area. Online animations are available for each figure to better illustrate the motions of magnetic field lines.
