Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like a navigator, Derrida sets out from a Europe that has always defined itself as the capital of culture, the headland of thought, in whose name and for whose benefit exploration of other lands, other peoples, and other ways of thinking has been carried out. If such Eurocentric biases are not to be repeated, Derrida warns, the question of Europe must be asked in a new way; it must be asked by recalling another heading. Not only is it necessary for Europe to be responsible for the other, but its own identity is actually constituted by the other. Rejecting the easy or programmatic solutions of Euruocentrism or anti-Eurocentrism, of total unification or complete dispersion, Derrida argues for the necessity of working with and from the Enlightenment values of liberal democracy while at the same time recalling that these values do not themselves ensure respect for the other.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ian Hodder
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2018-08-21
  • ISBN : 0300240392
  • Pages : 199 pages

Download or read book Where Are We Heading written by Ian Hodder and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-21 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theory of human evolution and history based on ever-increasing mutual dependency between humans and things In this engaging exploration, archaeologist Ian Hodder departs from the two prevailing modes of thought about human evolution: the older idea of constant advancement toward a civilized ideal and the newer one of a directionless process of natural selection. Instead, he proposes a theory of human evolution and history based on “entanglement,” the ever-increasing mutual dependency between humans and things. Not only do humans become dependent on things, Hodder asserts, but things become dependent on humans, requiring an endless succession of new innovations. It is this mutual dependency that creates the dominant trend in both cultural and genetic evolution. He selects a small number of cases, ranging in significance from the invention of the wheel down to Christmas tree lights, to show how entanglement has created webs of human-thing dependency that encircle the world and limit our responses to global crises.

Book Heading Toward Omega

Download or read book Heading Toward Omega written by Kenneth Ring and published by William Morrow. This book was released on 1984 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Heading Toward Omega breaks new ground in near-death studies by focusing on the meaning of the near-death experience for the survivor and for human evolution. A near-death experience or NDE--which an estimated eight million Americans have had--occurs when a person is clinically dead but then survives and reports such phenomena as floating out of the body entering a dark tunnel, reviewing a life panorama, and encountering a brilliant white light. Such accounts have been described in best sellers by Raymond A. Moody and Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, and in Kenneth Ring's previous book, Life at Death, they were documented for the first time. Dr. Ring's intensive three-year search for the meaning of the near-death experience has been pursued through both scientifically designed questionnaires completed by hundreds of experiencers and wide-ranging interviews, many with persons who have reported unusually deep NDEs, from which he quotes frequently and copiously. From this study emerges a provocative pattern of very positive changes in outlook, values, and behavior following a near-death experience--often a complete transformation of personality. Dr. Ring also finds that NDEs are often powerful catalysts for spiritual awakening and psychic development. Moreover, deep NDEs frequently include strikingly similar visions of our planetary future. The depth and consistency of these life transformations--as well as the apparent widespread and increasing incidence of the NDE itself--lead Dr. Ring to a startling conclusion: Near-death experiences may be part of an evolutionary thrust toward higher consciousness for all humanity. Thus they may foreshadow the birth of a new planetary consciousness as we head toward Omega, the final goal of human evolution."--front and back flaps.

Book excerpt: On the sun-drenched island of Haiti in the 1970s, under the shadow of “Baby Doc” Duvalier’s notorious regime, locals eke out an existence as servants, bartenders and panderers to the white elite. Fanfan, Charlie, and Legba, aware of the draw of their adolescent, black bodies, seduce rich, middle-aged white tourists looking for respite from their colourless jobs and marriages. These “relationships” mirror the power struggle inherent in all transactions in Port-au-Prince’s seedy back streets. Heading South takes us into the world of artists, rappers, Voodoo priests, hotel owners, uptight Parisian journalists and partner-swapping Haitian lovers, all desperately trying to balance happiness with survival. Made into an award-winning film starring Charlotte Rampling, this provocative novel, translated for the first time into English, explores the lines between sexual liberation and exploitation, artistic freedom and appropriation, independence and colonialism.

Book Heading Toward the Final Finish Line

Download or read book Heading Toward the Final Finish Line written by Rrrick Karampatsos and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rrrick's story tells how faith helps us approach many finish lines in life. He speaks of the effort, expense, and pain expended for marathons and goes the extra mile to compare that to preparing for the 'final finish line.' Chris Gillespie, Founder & Executive Director of TEAM 413 - GRACERUNNER Ministries: "Rick Karampatsos loves to run. He loves to train for races. He loves the start of a race. He loves putting one foot in front of the other as he moves through each trial. He loves the exhilaration of finishing a race. However, Rick loves our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, above all else. His story is one that exemplifies the mercy, grace, love, and care of Christ in ALL things. As you read, listen to Rick's heart! You will be blessed by this hero of the faith." Richard Hopkins, President and Founder of ChristianRunners.org: "There is such a parallel between Hebrews 12:1 and Rick's endurance that my heart fills with joy when I read and/or think about it! What a great example to us all in our run as believers, our run in every day life, and of course our run on the course!" "Rrrick" Karampatsos is a Christian and a marathoner. He is a native of Massachusetts who now makes his home in Florida. He combines his love of Jesus with his love of running to uniquely encourage others. You will share his running adventures - almost feel his pain, see the beauty of America through his eyes, benefit from the lessons he learned, know that humor helps, and witness the faith that keeps feet moving when moving is the last thing you want to do. Doctors told him he would have trouble walking; running wasn't an option. But, Rrrick's faith gave him another story to tell.
