Book excerpt: Arabs and Arabists contains nineteen selected articles by Alastair Hamilton on the Western acquisition of knowledge of the Arab and Ottoman world in the early modern period. The first essays are on Arabs who visited Europe and gave instruction to Western Arabists, and on Europeans who either visited the Arab (or the Ottoman) world in search of manuscripts and information or who, like Franciscus Raphelengius, Isaac Casaubon and Adriaen Reland, studied it at a distance and remained in the West. These are followed by a section on the actual study of the Arabic language in Europe, and above all the creation of the first Arabic-Latin dictionaries, and another on the European study of Islam and Western translations of the Qur’an.

Book Orthodox Confession of the Eastern Catholic and Apostolic Church

Download or read book Orthodox Confession of the Eastern Catholic and Apostolic Church written by St. Peter (Mogila) Metr. of Kiev and published by . This book was released on 2021-12-02 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is the book presented at the Council of 1640 so remarkable? The patriarch of Jerusalem and all Palestine, Nektarios - a contemporary of St. Peter - explained this by the fact that it contains "a confession that is right and pure, not having in itself the slightest admixture from the novelties of any other Confessions." " Peter Mogila, - he wrote in the preface, -when he was elected and ordained an Orthodox Metropolitan, found his flock infected with some new opinions of unbelievers - opinions completely contrary to the right, ancient teaching. Therefore, as a good Shepherd and a zealous defender of the Faith, he undertook a God-pleasing intention to win over and turn the Russian Church to that pure teaching, which she adhered to at first; and all new opinions that have arisen in it to destroy by the root and, thus, to fertilize his spiritual field, and to make it fruitful. Thinking well about his business, he immediately set to work. He summoned men who were famous for their enlightenment from his diocese to the Metropolitanate, and even before that he summoned three bishops under his control. We discussed a lot and, in the end, everyone, with general advice and agreement, decided: to write a summary of his Faith ... ",- which was done. It should be added that the "Catechism" of St. Peter was important and needed not only for the Russian Church, but for the entire Ecumenical Orthodoxy. Before him there were ancient confessions and statements of faith against ancient heresies, and catechisms that were written after the fall of the Roman Church. But since the 16th century, the situation has changed, since Protestantism arose in the West and the previous beliefs became insufficient: they did not give answers to new questions and did not have information about new delusions.

Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. Book The Copts and the West 1439 1822

Download or read book The Copts and the West 1439 1822 written by Alastair Hamilton and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-07-27 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In seventeenth-century Europe the Copts, or the Egyptian members of the Church of Alexandria, were widely believed to hold the key to an ancient wisdom and an ancient theology. Their language was thought to lead to the deciphering of the hieroglyphs and their Church to retain traces of early Christian practices as well as early Egyptian customs. Now available in paperback for the first time, this first, full-length study of the subject, discusses the attempts of Catholic missionaries to force the Church of Alexandria into union with the Church of Rome and the slow accumulation of knowledge of Coptic beliefs, undertaken by Catholics and Protestants. It ends with a survey of the study of the Coptic language in the West and of the uses to which it was put by Biblical scholars, antiquarians, theologians, and Egyptologists.

Book How the West Was Won

Download or read book How the West Was Won written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-04-06 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the West Was Won contains articles in three main areas of the humanities. It focuses on various aspects of literary imagination, with essays ranging from Petrarch to Voltaire; on the canon, with essays on western history as one of shifting cultural horizons and ideals, and including censorship; and on the Christian Middle Ages, when an interesting combination of religion and culture stimulated the monastic and intellectual experiments of Anselm of Canterbury and Peter Abelard. The volume is held together by the method of persistent questioning, in the tradition of the western church father and icon of the self Augustine, to discover what the values are that drive the culture of the West: where do they come from and what is their future? This volume is a Festschrift for Burcht Pranger of the University of Amsterdam.

He set out for the East in 1671 to collect manuscripts and antiquities for the French king and also produced the best study of the Copts to have appeared to date. This book recounts his travels in Syria, Turkey and Egypt, his everyday life in Cairo, and his anthropological and archeological discoveries which include the Graeco-Roman Ǧabbārī cemetery in Alexandria, the Roman city of Antinopolis on the Nile, the Coptic monastery of St Anthony on the Red Sea and the Red and White monasteries in Upper Egypt.

Book excerpt: Eight authoritative essays explore the changing relationships between the Greeks and their Eastern neighbours from the Bronze Age to the Classical period, examining archaeological evidence in the shape of pottery, wall-painting, sculpture, architecture, jewellery, seals, and inscriptions. The papers cover a wide range of topics, including trade, settlements, and cultural and artistic interchange. They assess the actual presence of Minoans, Mycenaeans and later Greeks in the East and shed light on the economic and political interaction between Greeks and the peoples of Mesopotamia and Anatolia, the Hittite Empire, Phoenicia, Syria, and Achaemenid Persia. Milestone contributions include the definitive survey and analysis of the recent excavations at the most important Greek Bronze Age site in Asia Minor, Miletus.
