Book The Governance of Empire Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Governance of Empire Classic Reprint written by Percy Arthur Silburn and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Governance of Empire The object of presenting this work to the public is twofold. Firstly, as a colonial, my desire is to present a colonial view of the imperial idea, and, secondly, to endeavour to arouse among my countrymen, in the United Kingdom especially, a greater interest and pride in the Empire beyond the seas. My critics may point to the number of able works bearing directly or indirectly upon the British Empire which have been published within recent years, and it may even be said that I am repeating an oft-told tale, that many of the suggestions which I now put forward, with all due deference to these self-same critics, have been made before. My reply is, "The thing that hath been, is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done; and there is no new things under the sun" (Eccles. I. 9). I am well aware that much which appears between these covers has at some time or another, in different forms, appeared in print; but the labour entailed to bring the material together in such order as to bear intelligently upon the vast subject this book barely touches the fringe of, is more than time will allow the average politician, or man of affairs, of the present day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Augustus Caesar: And the Organisation of the Empire of Rome This volume may be considered to some extent as a sequel to the earlier volume on Julius Caesar in this series which was written by Mr. W. Warde Fowler. It also inevitably overlaps to a certain de gree the volume on Cicero, written by Mr. J. L. Strachan-davidson. I hope it may be found not wholly unworthy to take a place by the side of those two brilliant studies. My obligations to the in numerable scholars and historians who have worked and tilled the same ground before me are exceed ingly great. For the earlier period I may specially mention the illuminative essays in the great Dublin edition of T fie Letters of Cicero; for the constitu tional changes introduced by Augustus, Mr. A. H. J. Greenidge's Roman Puelz'c Life; and for the pro vincial administration, Professor Mommsen's well known work, T fie Provinces of Ike Roman Empire. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book The Empire on the Anvil

Download or read book The Empire on the Anvil written by W. Basil Worsfold and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Empire on the Anvil: Being Suggestions and Data for the Future Government of the British Empire By the masses, but gathering strength with improved intercommunications and the growing recognition of essential mutual interests. The military assis tance, freely offered in the Sudan in 1885 and in South Africa in 1899 - 1902, supplied an object lesson alike of the strong sentiment of our fellow subjects overseas and of their military spirit, which powerfully appealed to the public imagination. Thus, in the years before the bursting of the storm, forces have come into play which have worked in the direction of closer political interchange and of tentative organisation for defence. Other forces of local origin have brought about the federation of two important groups of contiguous Colonies and may have helped to disseminate the federal idea. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Imperial Organization of Trade The present volume is a contribution towards the knowledge of one branch only of Imperial Organiza tion, that of trade. Book Empire and Sovereignty Classic Reprint

Download or read book Empire and Sovereignty Classic Reprint written by Ernst Freund and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Empire and Sovereignty When we say that in ancient Greece the idea of the state was realized only in the city, we recognize not only the fact that Greek national life never attained any ade quate political organization, but also that to Greek political thinkers the idea of such an organization did not assume the form of a consolidated state. The abortive steps toward political unity show the possible lines of further development: a united Greece would have been either a permanent symmachy, like that headed by Athens in the time of Pericles, or a federation like the Achaean, extending over the whole of Greece; that is to say, it would have been a protectorate or a federal state.
