Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume tells the little-known story of the Dominican Family—priests, sisters, brothers, contemplative nuns, and lay people—and integrates it into the history of the United States. Starting after the Civil War, the book takes a thematic approach through twelve essays examining Dominican contributions to the making of the modern United States by exploring parish ministry, preaching, health care, education, social and economic justice, liturgical renewal and the arts, missionary outreach and contemplative prayer, ongoing internal formation and renewal, and models of sanctity. It charts the effects of the United States on Dominican life as well as the Dominican contribution to the larger U.S. history. When the country was engulfed by wave after wave of immigrants and cities experienced unchecked growth, Dominicans provided educational institutions; community, social, and religious centers; and health care and social services. When epidemic disease hit various locales, Dominicans responded with nursing care and spiritual sustenance. As the United States became more complex and social inequities appeared, Dominicans cried out for social and economic justice. Amidst the ugliness and social dislocation of modern society, Dominicans offered beauty through the liturgical arts, the fine arts, music, drama, and film, all designed to enrich the culture. Through it all, the Dominicans cultivated their own identity as well, undergoing regular self-examination and renewal.

Book Tradition as Mediation Louis I Kahn

Download or read book Tradition as Mediation Louis I Kahn written by Dana Margalith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores Louis I. Kahn's approach to tradition as revealed in two of his important, unbuilt, projects. Focusing on Kahn's designs for the Dominican Motherhouse of St. Catherine de Ricci, Media, Pennsylvania (1965-1969), and the Hurva Synagogue, Jerusalem, Israel (1967-1974), the book challenges prevailing aesthetic and methodological assessments of Kahn's use of tradition. It reveals how an authentic and critical theoretical-historical and humanistic study of tradition nourished Kahn's designs, enabling him to mediate historical rituals, ideas and beliefs – and to develop innovative designs rooted deep in human culture while addressing real modern concerns. The book evaluates Kahn's works as a creative recreation and re-interpretation of the past, shedding light on the potential value of the meaningful consideration of tradition in modern times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vivid and disquieting narrative of Jesuit slaveholding and its historical relationship with Jesuit universities in the United States The Society of Jesus, commonly known as the Jesuits, is renowned for the quality of the order’s impact on higher education. Less well known, however, is the relationship between Jesuit higher education and slavery. For more than two hundred years, Jesuit colleges and seminaries in the United States supported themselves on the labor of the enslaved. “Let Us Go Free” tells the complex stories of the free and enslaved people associated with these Catholic institutions. Walker Gollar shows that, in spite of their Catholic faith, Jesuits were in most respects very typical slaveholders. At times, they may have been concerned with the spiritual and physical well-being of the enslaved, but mostly they were concerned with the finances of their plantations and farms. Gollar traces the legacies of the Jesuits’ participation in the slaveholding economy, portrays the experiences of those enslaved by the Jesuits, and shares the Jesuits’ attempts to come to terms with their history. Deeply based on original research in Jesuit archives, “Let Us Go Free” provides a vivid and disquieting narrative of Jesuit slaveholding for the general reader interested in the historical relationship between slavery and universities in the United States.

Book The Dominicans in the Americas and the Philippines c 1500 c 1820

Download or read book The Dominicans in the Americas and the Philippines c 1500 c 1820 written by David T. Orique and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-06 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dominicans in the Americas and the Philippines (c. 1500–c. 1820) is part of a renewal of interest in the global history of the Dominican Order. Many of the essays were carefully selected among some of the papers presented at the III International Conference on the History of the Order of Preachers in the Americas, a gathering that stands in continuity with the conferences of Mexico (2013) and Bogotá (2016). This book, the contributors of which are active researchers specializing in the history of the Order of Preachers in Latin America, is organized in four parts: Women and the Order of Preachers; “Benditos Bienes”: Libraries and Material Patrimony; Missions, Devotional, and Daily Life; and The Order of Preachers and Their Writings. Contributions deal with different subfields including art history, gender studies, history of the book, and intellectual history more broadly. Additionally, it contains a chapter examining the historiography of the Order of Preachers in Latin America. Covering the time range from 1510 to the early nineteenth century, the book fills a gap in the historiography of the Order of Preachers in the Americas, especially in English-language scholarly literature. Students of Latin American history, the history of Christianity, and the history of global Catholicism will surely find the volume to be of great interest.

Book The Dominican Revival in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book The Dominican Revival in the Nineteenth Century written by Raymund Devas and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dominican Revival in the Nineteenth Century: Being Some Account of the Restoration of the Order of Preachers Throughout, the World Under Fr; Jandel the Seventy-Third Master-General In his early days as a Catholic, Newman may well have asked, as he actually did in a letter to Dalgairns in July 1846, whether the Dominican Order was not "a great idea extinct." With reference also to the fasts and abstinence enjoined by the rule of that Order, he said definitely: Nous avons change tout cela. Newman indeed may well have thought so then, for Alexander Vincent Jandel had not yet been appointed by Divine Providence to prove to the world that things had not really changed so much: to prove that now, if ever, there is need in the Church of an Order wedded to truth and austerity - an Order of men whose minds should be devoted to prayer and study with a view to preaching, and whose bodies should be kept in subjection as far as possible by fasting, abstinence, and vigils. Yet in Jandel himself there was little or nothing of the "primitive man" of Francis Thompson. "The old asceticism" can hardly have appealed very strongly to one who had so little "lustiness of the body."
