Book excerpt: "A fascinating and disturbing book. . . a literary grenade seeking to blow apart Opus Dei's benign and exalted image. . . a picture of an obsessively secretive, manipulative and sexist organization with a virtual cultlike veneration of its founder."-Boston Globe Tapia's book is a comprehensive account of the inner workings of the women's branch of Opus Dei. It should fascinate sociologists and feminist and contribute to needed self-criticism in the Roman Catholic Church. . . A best seller in Spain, and a success in Germany, Portugal and Italy, Tapia's book has important lessons not only for John Paul II and other Catholics, but for all who wish to see religion freed from the tyranny of self-proclaimed saints."-Christian Century" The little I knew about Opus Dei before reading this book was enough to make me feel uneasy about the increasing strength and visibility of the organization in the Catholic Church. Tapia's book deepened my wariness into something akin to dread. Her book, however, is not a cheap or sensational expose. It is the chronicle of an intelligent and sensitive woman who served the organization in responsible positions during her 18 year sojourn as a full member." -National Catholic Reporter

Book A Cultural History of Dress and Fashion in the Age of Empire

Download or read book A Cultural History of Dress and Fashion in the Age of Empire written by Denise Amy Baxter and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the production of dress shifted dramatically from being predominantly hand-crafted in small quantities to machine-manufactured in bulk. The increasing democratization of appearances made new fashions more widely available, but at the same time made the need to differentiate social rank seem more pressing. In this age of empire, the coding of class, gender and race was frequently negotiated through dress in complex ways, from fashionable dress which restricted or exaggerated the female body to liberating reform dress, from self-defining black dandies to the oppressions and resistances of slave dress. Richly illustrated with over 100 images and drawing on a plethora of visual, textual and object sources, A Cultural History of Dress and Fashion in the Age of Empire presents essays on textiles, production and distribution, the body, belief, gender and sexuality, status, ethnicity, and visual and literary representations to illustrate the diversity and cultural significance of dress and fashion in the period.

An English soldier, destined for glory, abandons the battlefields of the New World to devote himself to growing apples. A pair of spinster twins navigate war and famine, envy and desire. A crime reporter unearths an ancient mass grave—only to discover that the earth refuse to give up their secrets. A lovelorn painter, a sinister con man, a stalking panther, a lusty beetle: As the inhabitants confront the wonder and mystery around them, they begin to realize that the dark, raucous, beautiful past is very much alive. This magisterial and highly inventive novel from Pulitzer Prize finalist Daniel Mason brims with love and madness, humor and hope. Following the cycles of history, nature, and even language, North Woods shows the myriad, magical ways in which we’re connected to our environment, to history, and to one another. It is not just an unforgettable novel about secrets and destinies, but a way of looking at the world that asks the timeless question: How do we live on, even after we’re gone?

Book The Border

    Book Details:
  • Author : David J. Danelo
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2019-06-01
  • ISBN : 0811768457
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book The Border written by David J. Danelo and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-06-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Danelo spent three months traveling the 1,952 miles that separate the United States and Mexico--a journey that took him across four states and two countries through a world of rivers and canals, mountains and deserts, highways and dirt roads, fences and border towns. Here the border isn't just an abstraction thrown around in political debates in Washington; it's a physical reality, infinitely more complex than most politicians believe. Danelo’s investigative report about a complex, longstanding debate that became a central issue of the 2016 presidential race examines the border in human terms through a cast of colorful characters. As topical today as it was when Danelo made his trek, this revised and updated edition asks and answers the core questions: Should we close the border? Is a fence or wall the answer? Is the U.S. government capable of fully securing the border?

Book A Wetback in Reverse

Download or read book A Wetback in Reverse written by Frederick Martin-Del-Campo and published by CCB Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02-06 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our hero, let’s call him Freddy for the sake of confusion, treks to the land of his forebears ~ that unique land of many names, but to the confused and disillusioned, we know it as Mexico. Why is he there? That is the question! He suffers many diversions, many distractions. Many deceptions and many disillusions befuddle his perceptions of this land of mystery: it is lush and lovely, hellish and horror-filled, full of music and full of muckrakers... It also turns out that he is there as an illegal alien while searching for the answer to a mystery. But Freddy doesn’t know he is there illegally. He only knows that Life has played a trick on him, and instead of persecuting so-called Wetbacks within the borders of America, he is now a so-called Wetback trapped in the land of his forebears, persecuted by the government, and trying to reverse a very trifling conundrum of misunderstandings borne of the great mystery that caused him to end up in a land where he’d thought never to go in the first place! With laughter in the heart, he runs from the so-called Federales while indulging in all the adventures that Mexico has to offer. Hence, his troubles increase, and tribulations bedevil him as he tries to find a way out of one trying mess after another. Meanwhile, he meets a man he never knew existed but would prove to be the link to the Past he sought, and make sense of all the confusion. But, all the while these troubles chase him back to the American border. The wise men say, in so many words, that nobody knows like Mexicans know the troubles that Mexico knows. Therefore, to luck we entrust the resolution of this muddle-some plot, and to the good graces of our readers. So, read the book and the plot might finally make sense to you. And, when it does, then tell us all about it! About the Author Frederick Martin-Del-Campo, also known as Frederick Martin-In-The-Fields, is a writer/author with a growing reputation among itinerant, avant-garde artists and other writers in California. His writings are now available through international literary venues, and he edits his own blogs, CHILDREN OF ANGER, and the increasingly popular LAST OF THE RED HOT PERVS. Frederick is a native of California. He worked as a teacher of History and ELT studies while pursuing his calling as writer. His most recently published book is the powerful THE MEDITATIONS OF MISERY, which reveals the workings of a mind in permanent suspension from reality. His grandiose opus, CHRONICLES OF WAR AND A WANDERER, has received rave reviews both by individual readers as by professional reviewers since it was released in 2007. His poignant biographies of his ancestors can be procured in a two volume series: BOUND FOR THE PROMISED LAND. He reveals his mastery of the thriller genre with his 2004 release of THE ISLAND OF ESTASIA. Upon undertaking these difficult projects, he felt they would enrich the literature of American and International lore. He has also published a highly-regarded poetic anthology of his own entitled, ON THE HILL OF CONTEMPLATION. His latest contribution to literature, A WETBACK IN REVERSE, could be described as a labor of love and hate as it recounts his experiences and tribulations in Mexico as he sought to find a way home after being left for lost during a crucial time in his life.

Book The Ferriby Boats

Download or read book The Ferriby Boats written by Edward Wright and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1937 the author, then aged 19, found the remains of an ancient boat at Ferriby on the Humber shore. This book is his own account of his discoveries, excavations and research over 50 years since the first boat find. The importance of this and the subsequent finds was only fully recognised after World War II, when the new technique of carbon-14 dating revealed that the Ferriby Boats were built before 1000 BC. This makes them the oldest plank-built boats found anywhere in the world apart from Ancient Egypt and the Aegean; they predate any similar craft in Northern Europe by half a millennium and present evidence for a style of boat building previously unknown. The excavation and preservation of the boats presented many problems, not least the constant battle with mud and the tide. Over the years the author pioneered methods of excavating and recording which have since become standard in the field of maritime archaeology. This book also presents a realistic reconstruction of the boats with estimates of its performance. They suggest a capacity for navigation at this time not previously imagined and add a new and fundamental dimension to the history of man's relationship with the sea.

Book U S Marines and Irregular Warfare 1898 2007

Download or read book U S Marines and Irregular Warfare 1898 2007 written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Product Description: Since the tragic events of 9/11 and the consequent advent of the Global War on Terrorism, there has been a remarkable surge of interest in counterinsurgency. This anthology presents 27 articles on counterinsurgency and irregular warfare, particularly highlighting and examining the U.S. Marine Corps' roles in conflicts from 1898 through 2007. It also includes an extensive bibliography of works on these conflicts. Continuing discussion and study of these subjects is of critical importance to the ongoing efforts of the United States and its allies in the Global War on Terrorism. The anthology is divided broadly into two halves: the first half presents historical examples of counterinsurgency involving the United States-from the Philippines and the "Banana Wars" up through Vietnam-while the second half addresses the nation's contemporary efforts in this regard. Articles cover the situations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Horn of Africa. The selected bibliography addresses a broad range of subjects: on higher-end operational/strategic level of war considerations, on geopolitical context, and on a varied array of related topics-political theory, historical case studies, failed states, cultural studies and analysis, and many others-that all provide context or play a role in conducting a counterinsurgency and achieving success in the realm of irregular warfare. Colonel Stephen S. Evans, USMCR, researched and compiled this work as a field historian with the Marine Corps History Division. He has experience at various operational levels, both joint and multinational, in CONUS and overseas, and has performed duty with all three MEFs, MARFORLANT, MARFOREUR, and U.S. forces in Korea. He has also held a range of positions in administrative and educational roles at Quantico and the Pentagon. Colonel Evans holds a doctorate in history from Temple University and has published two historical monographs.
