Book excerpt: The One Open Door follows the adventures of the author as he seeks to free himself from the sorrow and unhappiness we all endure as humans on this earth. He begins as a confused and desperate young man. As the story unfolds he discovers spiritual practice, he learns to look inward, and then, to his surprise and delight, he begins to see how suffering is caused. He spends some time struggling on his own to find his way, and as he does he begins to have real glimpses of happiness and self-love. Then the big moment comes when he meets the person who will become his teacher. She inspires him to give his life to spiritual practice; for a full year he vacillates between ecstasy and horror until, finally, in a moment of blind courage and inspiration, he casts himself upon the mercy of the monastery she founded and asks for help. Eighteen years of silent Zen training follow. Over time, as he stumbles through every sort of scrape and pitfall imaginable, his commitment deepens, he acquires the tools of awareness practice, he grows up, and eventually he finds the love and acceptance he is searching for. The story is full both of the teachings the author received and the profound, often strange, sometimes hilarious ways he received them. There is a way to end suffering. The One Open Door describes this way through the experience of one person. The book was written at the monastery with the hope that it might assist others to discover the practice of compassionate awareness that the author learned and that the Buddha taught so long ago.

Book Knocking at the Open Door

Download or read book Knocking at the Open Door written by R.E. Mark Lee and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. Krishnamurti (1895-1986) was thought by many to be a modern-day equivalent of the Buddha. In fact, he was once even considered to be the second coming of Christ. While many think it wonderful to live and work in close proximity with such a person, its difficult to understand the depth of what this means and how challenging this might be. In Knocking at the Open Door, author R.E. Mark Lee provides an ordinary person view of what being close-up and working together with such a man means, how it challenges one at every turn, and how it causes one to question ceaselessly, even more deeply than one ordinarily would. Lee offers an insightful, candid, and heartfelt narrative that reveals various unknown facets of the eminent world teacher J. Krishnamurti and highlights his distinctive vision for education worldwide. This comprehensive volume brings alive the practical and everyday interactions Lee had with Krishnamurti during a twenty-year period in India and the United Sates. Knocking at the Open Door shares a clear and honest account that demonstrates the challenges of working with Krishnamurti in running a school that is true to the teaching and yet able to function in the reality of modern parental, student, and educational establishment expectations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Open Door is a landmark of women's writing in Arabic. Published in 1960, it was very bold for its time in exploring a middle-class Egyptian girl's coming of sexual and political age, in the context of the Egyptian nationalist movement preceding the 1952 revolution. The novel traces the pressures on young women and young men of that time and class as they seek to free themselves of family control and social expectations. Young Layla and her brother become involved in the student activism of the 1940s and early 1950s and in the popular resistance to continued imperialist rule; the story culminates in the 1956 Suez Crisis, when Gamal Abd al-Nasser's nationalization of the Canal led to a British, French, and Israeli invasion. Not only daring in her themes, Latifa al-Zayyat was also bold in her use of colloquial Arabic, and the novel contains some of the liveliest dialogue in modern Arabic literature. "Not only a great novel, but a literary landmark that shaped our consciousness." Abdel Moneim Tallima "A great anticolonialist work in a feminist key." Ferial Ghazoul "Latifa al-Zayyat greatly helped all of us Egyptian writers in our early writing careers." Naguib Mahfouz

Book excerpt: NATO's decision to open itself to new members and new missions is one of the most contentious and least understood issues of the post-Cold War world. This book, an unusual and intriguing blend of memoirs and scholarship, takes us back to the decade when those momentous decisions were made. Former senior officials from the United States, Russia, Western and Eastern Europe who were directly involved in the decisions of that time describe their considerations, concerns, and pressures. They are joined by scholars who have been able to draw on newly declassified archival sources to revisit NATO's evolving role in the 1990s.
