Book The Senior Driver s Survival Guide

Download or read book The Senior Driver s Survival Guide written by Norman Klein and published by Author House. This book was released on 2010-05-20 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Senior Drivers! Your future is in jeopardy. A disturbing situation is developing in the United States. Since people are living longer, the number of drivers over 65 is escalating three times as rapidly as the general driving population. Older people have difficulty concentration, shorter attention spans and failing vision among other ailments. Unfortunately this results in frequent driving mishaps, sometimes with catastrophic results. Taking away their driving privileges would deprive them of their self esteem and independence. This could happen if they continued to have accidents caused by their propensity to get distracted easily and lose concentration. Some states have already enacted laws requiring re-exams for seniors. No doubt many more will follow. Driving slower in traffic is not the answer. This could cause accidents. Driving too fast would be worse since a person’s attention span and reaction time deteriorate with age. It does not matter how skillful he or she once were, aging diminishes skill in almost all areas including the operation of a motor vehicle. Driving today has become more complex as many more cars are on the road. When seniors started to drive, turnpikes and expressways were non existent. After observing the avoidable accidents seniors were having, and realizing how their ranks were exploding, I decided to write “The Senior Driver’s Survival Guide” – subtitled What You Must Know to Protect Your Driving Privileges. Its contents can enable older drivers to drive with a more acute awareness and help them to be better drivers in their “Golden” years. It is an important book which has the power to change and save lives.

Book Older and Wiser Rider

Download or read book Older and Wiser Rider written by Holly A. Tuokko and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition, although the reported general health of most participants was good and did not change over the course of the study, some drivers limited their driving due to health and mobility concerns. [...] To assess the impact of group transit training, volunteers were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a control group that received no training, a group who received group transit training only, and a group that received group transit training and a free three-month bus pass which was specially encoded to collect data on the frequency for which the participants used the bus. [...] In this report, we describe a collaborative project undertaken by researchers at the Centre of 4 The Older and Wiser Rider Aging, University of Victoria, BC Transit, Silver Threads, and the Capital Regional District (CRD) Traffic Safety Commission to examine the transportation habits of older adults and the impact of group transit training. [...] Participants then proceeded to take a short bus ride where the driver demonstrated how to swipe a bus pass, how to ring the bell to request the next stop, how to get off the bus, and pointed out certain indicators within the bus (e.g., the sign indicating the requested next stop). [...] As the figure shows, a large portion (48.4%) of respondents reported that driving is the form of transportation they use most often, compared to 22.5% who use the bus, and 16.4% who ride as a passenger in a car.

Download or read book Railway Man written by Mitchell Deaver and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-01-16 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Railway Man begins with author Mitchell Deaver paying a nostalgic visit to Bickle signal box, base of boyhood adventures described in his first book Railway Boy. Shortly after, he leaves rural Yorkshire for life in the big cities. It is 1968. Railway Man describes the emotionally devastating draw-down of steam traction on British Railways. Three steam sheds remain: Carnforth, Lostock Hall and Rose Grove. The end comes when the last steam train runs on 11th August. The total steam ban is unbearable. Mitchell Deaver's brainchild, the Return to Steam Committee, tries to get steam back on British Railways. In 1980 Mitchell Deaver achieves a boyhood dream and becomes a signalman on the busy North London Line. Railway Man describes the realities of operating a mechanical signal box, one that is open continuously. Life as a signalman is not without incident. A mischievous letter prompts a visit from senior management. Signal box operations degenerate into a scene from the Marx Brothers. A signalmen's night out turns into a baffling conspiracy. In this true story set in the cities of Birmingham, Liverpool and London and spanning two decades, Railway Man describes a monumental battle between, on one side, Mitchell Deaver's love of railways and, on the other, forces that try to draw him elsewhere. Which side wins?
