Book excerpt: The Tempest is a play by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written in 1610-11, and thought by many critics to be the last play that Shakespeare wrote alone. It is set on a remote island, where the sorcerer Prospero, rightful Duke of Milan, plots to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place using illusion and skillful manipulation. He conjures up a storm, the eponymous tempest, to cause his usurping brother Antonio and the complicit King Alonso of Naples to believe they are shipwrecked and marooned on the island. There, his machinations bring about the revelation of Antonio's lowly nature, the redemption of the King, and the marriage of Miranda to Alonso's son, Ferdinand.

Book excerpt: This is the text of the 1623 printing of the first folio. The original spelling and punctuation are completely intact. I have made two minor changes. First, I have capitalized and spelled out the character names. Cal. How does thy honour? Let me licke thy shooe, becomes CALIBAN. How does thy honour? Let me licke thy shooe. The second change is that I have put the prose lines into prose form. If there was any possibility that a prose line could scan, however awkwardly, I have left the verse-like form of the line as it appears in the folio. Again, the spelling and punctuation of the 1623 first folio text are entirely intact. If you enjoy this copy of The Tempest, please take a moment to review the book online.
