Bishop Flipper was a poor runaway southern Black orphaned teenager who encountered a starving crippled old Black man with a three-legged dog. After sharing his meager food with this old man, the old man promised the orphaned teenager a blessed life in Chicago for six and a half years. On July 12, 1937, Madame Madelyn, a frail pipe-smoking elderly woman, invited Bishop to her to mysterious storefront business. Madelyn, a voodoo priestess, warned her guest that his blessed six-and-a-half year period would end on July 13, 1937. This old lady offered the young man a battered old bronze magic ring, which she claimed would protect him from any harm. At noon, July 13, Bishop encounters Raoul La Croix and Paloma Issert. Raoul was huge menacing-looking, baldheaded Black man with a long serpentine stiletto who was treating the helpless Paloma Issert in the local Illinois Central train station. Paloma Issert was a young girl, from Algiers, Louisiana, who was desperately attempting to escape from Raoul. Quickly, Raoul became Bishop's adversary, while Paloma became his femme fatale.

Book excerpt: Whilst there are enough celebrity connections and anecdotes not to be out of place in an A list autobiography, the real hook of this book is that the author isnt remotely famous. The endearing appeal is that it is the viewpoint of the everyman, but one who has had enough light brushes with celebrity that he has some great tales to tell. These stories, anecdotes and musings are seamlessly woven into what for many of us will be a memory jogging, laughter inducing remembrance of some of the major, as well as quainter, stranger and more trivial moments of pop culture over the last few decades. If you love pop music and pop culture, feared the Daleks, the Child Catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and mourn the demise of Pez, Cresta, conkers as a rite of passage, jokes on lolly sticks, Top of the Pops and pink vinyl limited edition LPs, then you will surely enjoy this. Please beware! This book may waste days (if not weeks) of your life as almost every paragraph will have you frantically typing into your search engine and getting lost, on what may turn out to be an endless Internet Safari. This book contains some adult humour. Best Wishes and Good Luck with your writing Ben Elton

Book excerpt: Immortalized in death by The Clash, Pablo Neruda, Salvador Dalí, Dmitri Shostakovich and Lindsay Kemp, Federico García Lorca's spectre haunts both contemporary Spain and the cultural landscape beyond. This study offers a fresh examination of one of the Spanish language’s most resonant voices; exploring how the very factors which led to his emergence as a cultural icon also shaped his dramatic output. The works themselves are also awarded the space that they deserve, combining performance histories with incisive textual analysis to restate Lorca’s presence as a playwright of extraordinary vision, in works such as: Blood Wedding The Public The House of Bernarda Alba Yerma. Federico García Lorca is an invaluable new resource for those seeking to understand this complex and multifaceted figure: artist, playwright, director, poet, martyr and in the eyes of many, Spain’s ‘national dramatist’.

Book Sand Catcher

  • Author : Omar Khalifah
  • Publisher : Coffee House Press
  • Release : 2024-12-03

Download or read book Sand Catcher written by Omar Khalifah and published by Coffee House Press. This book was released on 2024-12-03 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sardonic, Palestinian Citizen Kane, Sand-Catcher is a dark and thrilling fable about collective memory and the many ways it can be both saved and subverted. Four Palestinian journalists at a Jordanian newspaper are tasked with writing a profile on one of the last living witnesses of the Nakba, the violent expulsion of native Palestinians by the nascent state of Israel in 1948. Confident that the old man will be more than willing to go on record about his experiences, the reporters are nonplussed when they are repeatedly, and obscenely, rebuffed by the man and his grandchildren. This living witness to history seems to have no desire to be interviewed, no desire for his memories to be preserved, no desire to talk. As the team's editor-in-chief puts more and more pressure on the young journalists, a battle of wills escalates to ruinous consequences that will leave no one unscathed. Omar Khalifah's debut novel Sand-Catcher is at once a polyphonic satire and a tightly plotted tale of suspense. Walking the line between gallows humor, rage, and depthless heartbreak, it is a unique reflection of contemporary Palestinian identity in all its facets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retired UCLA Police Officer, Terrence Duren, at the center of the 2006 UCLA Taser Incident, writes his memoir, “University Sheepdog in Westwood, Los Angeles" to set the record straight regarding his life and law enforcement career. There were television news reports and articles written about the Taser incident and of Terrence Duren's past. Some of these news reports and articles were unflattering and did not paint a complete picture of him and other officers involved in the Taser incident. In addition to the protests held at UCLA and other UC campuses, there were high volume of telephone calls to UCLA with people voicing their anger and support over the Taser incident. These telephone calls came from people living in the United States and abroad. There was such a high volume of phone calls that UCLA’s telecommunications nearly broke down. After a complete and thorough investigation, the UCLA police chief as well as UCLA campus administrators, concluded that Officer Duren did not violate policy with his use of the Taser. "University sheepdog in Westwood, Los Angeles" is a memoir that gives a better understanding of Officer Terrence Duren and his former colleagues. This memoir is a story of "Sheepdogs" (police officers), protecting the "Sheep" (students\faculty\staff\visitors and others), from the "Wolves" (criminals). Some of the contents in this memoir will tell of Terrence Duren's Officer Involved Shootings, on and off campus, his working undercover for six months buying narcotics from UCLA hospital employees, his confrontation with members of the Nation of Islam, his SWAT standoff with an armed suspect, lewd and lascivious activity in the men's restrooms, his mentoring victims and suspects, flimflammer, and more! Additionally, this Memoir has contents regarding Terrence's childhood growing up around Black Panthers, his service in the United States Marine Corps in peace time and during the First Gulf War. This memoir is unlike any other police story ever told. As you read this memoir, sit down and strap up because you are about to go on a ride!
