The western wing never had a chimney, the rooms having been principally used by the hired men as sleeping apartments. Although con nected with the main part by a door, it stands as a separate house, being built up against the older structure, as may be seen by an examination of the cellar. (this wing is supposed to have been built about I654.) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Historic Homes of New England Classic Reprint

Download or read book Historic Homes of New England Classic Reprint written by Mary Harrod Northend and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Homes of New England Tm: study of Old houses grows in interest with each additional discovery of good material, such as can be found in the old New England towns and cities, more especially those along the seacoast. The preservation Of these Old houses has done much to give us correct ideas' of the interiors, though many of these, with the change of owners, have been stripped of their colonial furnishings. Most of the houses that are shown in this book are private homes which have been opened by the owners to allow pictured representations of correct ancestral furnishing. Houses such as these possess the great est charm - ancestral homes that have descended from generation to generation in the same family since their founding. It has been a great pleasure to be allowed to visit these old mansions, which show wonderful staircases, richly carved mantels, and colonial windows, each one of which is an architectural gem. Through pictured homes like these one is given a deeper interest in the early life of our country and realizes more than ever before what the colonial period stood for in home building. Book Colonial and Old Houses of Greenwich New Jersey Classic Reprint

Download or read book Colonial and Old Houses of Greenwich New Jersey Classic Reprint written by Bessie Ayars Andrews and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonial and Old Houses, of Greenwich, New Jersey The great interest in later years to everything pertaining to the early history of our country has been an incentive to write the history of the colonial and old houses of Greenwich. The old town having been the place of my nativity, and home for many years, it has been my privilege to cross the threshold of many of the ancient houses, some of them the homes of valued friends, from whom I have learned much of the past. I have prepared the following pages with much care, endeavoring to preserve some of the history of that portion of the past which pertains to the home of the early settler. From the early records of deeds and wills preserved in the archives of the state, and now accessible by their publication, I have found names and dates not otherwise obtainable. I also wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to the Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society, for the use of its valuable library. It is hoped that these glimpses of days long gone, and the record of men and women who have made the old houses their dwelling place, may be of interest to the present generation, who should hold as a precious inheritance the memory of their ancestors, the early settlers of Greenwich. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Old Country House Perhaps, dear reader - if you will excuse so old-fashioned a manner of address, not inappropriate in the connection - perhaps it has not happened to be one of your dreams to live in an old house. Perdita and I, however, almost as soon as we dreamed of keeping a house together at all, had agreed that, if possible, it must be an old house. Of course, to live together was the main thing, though we could afford no higher rent than that of a hollow tree in the forest: but to live together in an old house would be best. It was a dream that had to wait. Waiting is said to be good for dreams. Meanwhile we did not live in a tree in the forest, but in a little red brick box, one of a neat row of suburban cottages facing a bit of old woodland which still defied the steadily encroaching town. Book Old Colonial Houses in Maine

Download or read book Old Colonial Houses in Maine written by Emma Huntington Nason and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Colonial Houses in Maine: Built Prior to 1776 The sketches in this volume present a brief record of some of the old colonial houses that are now standing in Maine, and that were built prior to 1776. The work does not profess to be complete in its lists, nor exhaustive in its details, but rather to describe certain buildings that represent the development of the early colonial dwelling from the ancient log garrison house and first framed cottage to the grandest of our colonial mansions, and to give, if possible, a brief glimpse into the lives of the people who converted these houses into homes. Many of the houses now popularly known as old colonial do not, however, fall within our period; for they were not erected until after the Revolution. The three decades from 1790 to 1820, during which peace and prosperity became assured in Maine, were rich in stately homes built on the best colonial models; and examples of these houses are now found in nearly all of our coast and river towns. Such houses, however, since they are not truly colonial, are necessarily excluded from our present consideration. If the following sketches give to the reader a characteristic picture of our early colonial homes and of the life of the men and women who dwelt therein, the mission of the book will be fulfilled. Book Helen of the Old House Classic Reprint

Download or read book Helen of the Old House Classic Reprint written by Harold Bell Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Helen of the Old House But it has come to pass that in these days when the people speak of Adam Ward they do not smile. When they speak of Adam Wards daughter, Helen, they smile, indeed, but with quite a different meaning. The history of Millsburgh is not essentially different from that of a thousand other cities of its class. Born of the natural resources of the hills and forests, the first rude mill was located on that wide sweeping bend of the river. About this industrial beginning a settlement gathered. As the farm lands of the valley were developed, the railroad came, bringing more mills. And so the town grew up around its smoky heart. It was in those earlier days that Adam Ward, a workman then, patented and introduced the new process. It was the new process, together with its owners native genius for "getting on" that, in time, made Adam the owner of the Mill. And, finally, it was this combination of Adam and the new process that gave this one mill dominion over all others. As the Mill increased hi size, importance and power, and the town grew into the city, Adam Wards material possessions were multiplied many times. Then came the year of this story. It was midsummer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Homes in Washington: Its Noted Men and Women When you read this page of dedication and see to whom it is inscribed, your first thought will be of the days so long ago, when hand in hand, we climbed the hills and spanned the meadow brooks, because we were nest deserted birds grown chill through something wanting in our home. Of all that such a recollection implies, of saddest and sweetest to both of us, we could not speak, one to the other, without voices faltering. It is enough that each doth know the other's thought. Book The Oldest House on Nantucket Island

Download or read book The Oldest House on Nantucket Island written by Ida Gardner Coffin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oldest House on Nantucket Island: In Two Parts The two custodians who have taken charge of the house and shown it to visitors since it was first opened for pub lic inspection, although kindly consenting to the publica tion of a few extracts from their letters, will see in these printed pages for the first time the passages Wth have been chosen. The entire series Of letters received from them during their custodianship would be regarded as most attractive reading by all who have a tend-er regard for Old houses and old associations, and who have at the same time a keen sense of the many varying phases Of human nature, from the ludicrous and peculiar upward to its higher manifestations. The chapters composing Part Second, although placed and mentioned last, are by no means the least prized por tion of the contents. As far as merit is concerned they might well have occupied the first pages of the book. But in view of their character it seemed proper that they should take the place the skilled architect reserves for his most ornamental work, not at the foundation, nor in the central portion, but for the part last built, the crest or crown of his edifice.
