Book Liturgy and Society in Early Medieval Rome

Download or read book Liturgy and Society in Early Medieval Rome written by Dr John F Romano and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-04-28 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The liturgy, the public worship of the Catholic Church, was a crucial factor in forging the society of early medieval Rome. As the Roman Empire dissolved, a new world emerged as Christian bishops stepped into the power vacuum left by the dismantling of the Empire. Among these potentates, none was more important than the bishop of Rome, the pope. The documents, archaeology, and architecture that issued forth from papal Rome in the seventh and eighth centuries preserve a precious glimpse into novel societal patterns. The underexploited liturgical sources in particular enrich and complicate our historical understanding of this period. They show how liturgy was the ‘social glue’ that held together the Christian society of early medieval Rome - and excluded those who did not belong to it. This study places the liturgy center stage, filling a gap in research on early medieval Rome and demonstrating the utility of investigating how the liturgy functioned in medieval Europe. It includes a detailed analysis of the papal Mass, the central act of liturgy and the most obvious example of the close interaction of liturgy, social relations and power. The first extant Mass liturgy, the First Roman Ordo, is also given a new presentation in Latin here with an English translation and commentary. Other grand liturgical events such as penitential processions are also examined, as well as more mundane acts of worship. Far from a pious business with limited influence, the liturgy established an exchange between humans and the divine that oriented Roman society to God and fostered the dominance of the clergy.

Book Reform of the Reform

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas Kocik
  • Publisher : Ignatius Press
  • Release : 2010-01-15
  • ISBN : 1681495406
  • Pages : 284 pages

Download or read book Reform of the Reform written by Thomas Kocik and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2010-01-15 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disturbed by the direction in which the post Vatican II liturgical reforms have moved, two fictitious representatives of mutually antagonistic movements debate the remedy for "correct" liturgical reform. This unique work presents a debate between a "traditionalist" who argues for a return to the pre-Vatican II liturgy, and a reformist (no liberal himself) who advocates a new liturgical reform more in keeping with what the Council fathers had in mind. They bring to the debate the insights of renowned authorities on the liturgy, including Cardinal Ratzinger, Msgr. Klaus Gamber, Michael Davies, Fr. Brian Harrison and Fr. Aidan Nichols. This book is written for anyone interested in the Church's liturgy, and the controversies surrounding the liturgical renewal. It is both a primer for those who lack the theological and liturgical expertise to articulate their dissatisfaction with the state of the liturgy, and an excellent resource for those specialists who would appreciate having a single volume for consulting salient points from numerous authorities.

Book The Languages of Gift in the Early Middle Ages

Download or read book The Languages of Gift in the Early Middle Ages written by Wendy Davies and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-02 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of original essays on gift in the early Middle Ages, from Anglo-Saxon England to the Islamic world. Focusing on the languages of gift, the essays reveal how early medieval people visualized and thought about gift, and how they distinguished between the giving of gifts and other forms of social, economic, political and religious exchange. The same team, largely, that produced the widely cited The Settlement of Disputes in Early Medieval Europe (Cambridge University Press, 1986) has again collaborated in a collective effort that harnesses individual expertise in order to draw from the sources a deeper understanding of the early Middle Ages by looking at real cases, that is at real people, whether peasant or emperor. The culture of medieval gift has often been treated as archaic and exotic; in this book, by contrast, we see people going about their lives in individual, down-to-earth and sometimes familiar ways.

Book The Lord s Supper Eucharist Mass What s in a Name

Download or read book The Lord s Supper Eucharist Mass What s in a Name written by Virgilio T.J. Suerte Felipe and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-02-04 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout its long and rich history, the celebration of Christ's paschal mystery has been called by different names. In the Bible, the early Church initially designated it as "the Lord's Supper" and" the Breaking of the Bread." Subsequently, it has been called Eucharist, Liturgy, Mystery, Sacrament, Sacrifice, Memorial, Mass, Real Presence, Paschal Banquet, and Communion. These twelve names of the Eucharist are used in the 2002 General Instruction of the Roman Missal which is the present manual for the celebration of Christ's paschal mystery. What is the history behind each name? Can we derive any theological meaning and pastoral implications from those names? Employing the threefold method of historical, theological, and pastoral investigations, Virgilio Suerte Felipe has also incorporated Pope Benedict XVI's recent Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Sacramentum Caritatis and Apostolic Letter Summorum Pontificum. This informative book will surely help not only teachers and students in schools but also pastors, lay leaders, and parishioners as well as religious communities.

  • Author : Uwe Michael Lang
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2022-09-29
  • ISBN : 1108962777
  • Pages : 755 pages

Download or read book The Roman Mass written by Uwe Michael Lang and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-29 with total page 755 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a new, synthetic overview of the structure and ritual shape of the Roman Mass from its formative period in late antiquity to its post-Tridentine standarisation. Starting with the Last Supper and the origins of the Eucharist, Uwe Michael Lang constructs a narrative that explores the intense religious, social, and cultural transformations that shaped the Roman Mass. Lang unites classical liturgical history with insights from a variety of other disciplines that have drawn attention to the ritual performance and reception of the mass. He also presents liturgical developments within the broader historical and theological contexts that affected the celebration and experience of the sacramental rite that is still at the heart of Catholic Christianity. Aimed at scholars from a broad swathe of subjects, including religious studies, history, art history, literature, and music, Lang's volume serves as a comprehensive history of the Roman Mass over the course of a millenium.
