Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Occluded Gases in Coal Concerning the work here outlined on the occluded gases, it should be said that the study is not to be considered by any means complete. The facts obtained make a well rounded unit, as a preliminary study, and since a considerable time must elapse before the final round of work can be completed, it has seemed advisable to publish the results that have been thus far worked out with much skill and patience by Mr. Barker. Book Occurrence of Explosive Gases in Coal Mines Classic Reprint

Download or read book Occurrence of Explosive Gases in Coal Mines Classic Reprint written by N. H. Darton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Occurrence of Explosive Gases in Coal Mines This report presents the results of an investigation begun by the Government in the summer of. 1907, the investigation being started under the immediate supervision of Dr. J. A. Holmes and continued under him as director after it was transferred to the Bureau of Mines in 1910, the field studies being completed in the spring of 1912. The purpose of the investigation was to obtain information on the origin of the inflammable gases in coal and the conditions under which they occur. It was especially intended to ascertain whether there was any relation between the occurrence of gas and the structural or other geologic features of the coal beds. To this end many months were spent in mines and much time was devoted to the examination of mine maps, bore-hole records, and other data made available by the kindness of various coal companies. Ritwo fields of work were selected - one in the northern anthracite basin of Pennsylvania, where the beds are considerably flexed, and the other in the southern part of the bituminous coal field of Illinois, where the beds lie nearly horizontal. In order to take advantage of results of previous investigations of the same general subject, an extended examination was made of reports of various investigators in Europe and America. A digest of the information obtained from these publications is included in the first part of this report, which constitutes an introduction to the discussion of the conditions governing the occurrence of inflammable gas in coal beds. Book A Practical Treatise

Download or read book A Practical Treatise written by Samuel Clegg Jun and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise: On the Manufacture and Distribution of Coal-Gas I have endeavoured in the present Edition to lay before my'readers the various improvements that have been made in the Manufacture of Gas since 1841, and I have to acknowledge the valuable assistance I have received from my friend Dr. Frankland, who has revised the chapter on the Chemistry of Coal Gas. To Dr. Lyon Playfair I am indebted for much important information; and Mr. William Pole has enabled me to perfect the subject of the Distribution of Gas through Mains, the chapter upon the theory of the motion of elastic fluids through pipes being entirely from his pen. It will be perceived that I have retained in this Edition descriptions of many portions of apparatus that have ceased to be em ployed: and I have done so simply that their history may be preserved, since it is often as useful to know what machinery is defective, as to be acquainted with that which is more perfect. The analysis of the various kinds of coal found in different parts of the world cannot, I think, fail to be of value. I have been careful, throughout the work, to enlarge only upon those points on which experience has enabled me to speak with certainty.
