The smoking room soon proved to be a very interesting part of the ship. In one corner sat five or six old veteranswho, though they had never before -me.t Seemed to harmon 1ze entirely with one another and took to poker, like a duck takes to water. They didn't know one an other's names, so they rechristened themselves, choosmg in every case, a suitable name. There was one of the bunch, with an extremely attenuated beard, sleek and, natty, who was readily named Foxy Grandpa. Ah other big fat fellow received the ap pellation of Buster Brown. A third, a little duffer, was called Little Robbie. A cowboy-looking fellow from the West was named Texas, and a lawyer from Missouri was given the name of Judge. This made up a most happy party, and with their quaint and original re marks and stories furnished much amusement for the rest of the pas sengers. The landscape was painted purple by the sun sinking in a perfect inferno of brilliant colours, an early moon had already asserted the new te gime, and at times the howl of the tim ber wolf wavered weirdly from the shore. A heavy bank of clouds, which had framed the sunset, began to spread over the sky. My partner suggested we might be caught in a storm. I said nothing but paddled harder.
