Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Taylor on the Muses that harmonise our triune energies by elevating them to the Noetic Unity of Spirit. Philosophy causes our psychical powers to be moved harmoniously, in symphony with real beings, and in accordance with the orderly motions of celestial orbs. Philosophy is the Greatest Music. Muses are the sources of the variety of harmonies. They impart to souls the investigation of Truth, and to bodies a multitude of powers. The Musagetes himself unfolds Truth to souls according to One Intellectual Simplicity. The Muses, the Celestial Spheres, the sensible world, the whole soul of the universe, and the souls of ordinary men, had a consubsistent progression. Ralph Emerson on Plato domesticating the soul in nature. George Mead on gods and their shaktis. Muses are intoxicated with the nectar of divine knowledge. They dance around Apollo, the splendour of one Invisible Sun. They are the powers of remembrance of spiritual knowledge enjoyed by the soul in past births. While Muses are the beneficent use of awakened spiritual powers, Sirens are the allurements of opened psychic powers. Madame Blavatsky explains how inferior goddesses emanate from superior deities.

Download or read book The Aldobrandini Wedding written by Frank G. J. M. Müller and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-21 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most intriguing works of art which have come down to us from antiquity is the Roman fresco known as 'The Aldobrandini Wedding'. As in the first two volumes of his iconological studies, the author's critical review of previous interpretations reveals that none of them will stand up to scrutiny. By applying a modern art-historical method, he arrives at a fundamentally new interpretation which accounts for the many iconographical details which are a distinctive feature of 'The Aldobrandini Wedding'. The painting turns out to be an idiosyncratic variant of a mythological theme that frequently crops up elsewhere in Roman art.
Download or read book The Figure of the Nymph in Early Modern Culture written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the early modern period, the nymph remained a powerful figure that inspired and informed the cultural imagination in many different ways. Far from being merely a symbol of the classical legacy, the nymph was invested with a surprisingly broad range of meanings. Working on the basis of these assumptions, and thus challenging Aby Warburg’s famous reflections on the nympha that both portrayed her as cultural archetype and reduced her to a marginal figure, the contributions in this volume seek to uncover the multifarious roles played by nymphs in literature, drama, music, the visual arts, garden architecture, and indeed intellectual culture tout court, and thereby explore the true significance of this well-known figure for the early modern age. Contributors: Barbara Baert, Mira Becker-Sawatzky, Agata Anna Chrzanowska, Karl Enenkel, Wolfgang Fuhrmann, Michaela Kaufmann, Andreas Keller, Eva-Bettina Krems, Damaris Leimgruber, Tobias Leuker, Christian Peters, Christoph Pieper, Bernd Roling, and Anita Traninger.

Download or read book Rival Praises written by Celia Campbell and published by University of Wisconsin Pres. This book was released on 2024 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Metamorphoses, written by the Roman poet Ovid, has fascinated readers ever since it was written in the first century CE, and here Celia M. Campbell offers a bold new interpretive approach. Reasserting the significance of the ancient hymnic tradition, she argues that the first pentad of Ovid's Metamorphoses draws a programmatic strain of influence from hymns to the gods, in particular conversation--and competition--with the work of the Alexandrian poet Callimachus, a favored source of inspiration to Augustan writers. She suggests that Ovid read Callimachus' six hymns as a self-conscious set--and reading the first five books of the Metamorphoses through Callimachus' hymnic collection allows us to pierce the occasionally opaque and seemingly idiosyncratic mythology Ovid constructs. Through careful, innovative close readings, Campbell illustrates that Callimachus and the hymnic tradition provide a kind of interpretative key to unlocking the dynamic landscape of divine power in Ovid's poetic cosmos.
