Book World Without Fish

Download or read book World Without Fish written by Mark Kurlansky and published by Workman Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A KID’S GUIDE TO THE OCEAN "Can you imagine a world without fish? It's not as crazy as it sounds. But if we keep doing things the way we've been doing things, fish could become extinct within fifty years. So let's change the way we do things!" World Without Fish is the uniquely illustrated narrative nonfiction account—for kids—of what is happening to the world’s oceans and what they can do about it. Written by Mark Kurlansky, author of Cod, Salt, The Big Oyster, and many other books, World Without Fish has been praised as “urgent” (Publishers Weekly) and “a wonderfully fast-paced and engaging primer on the key questions surrounding fish and the sea” (Paul Greenberg, author of Four Fish). It has also been included in the New York State Expeditionary Learning English Language Arts Curriculum. Written by a master storyteller, World Without Fish connects all the dots—biology, economics, evolution, politics, climate, history, culture, food, and nutrition—in a way that kids can really understand. It describes how the fish we most commonly eat, including tuna, salmon, cod, swordfish—even anchovies— could disappear within fifty years, and the domino effect it would have: the oceans teeming with jellyfish and turning pinkish orange from algal blooms, the seabirds disappearing, then reptiles, then mammals. It describes the back-and-forth dynamic of fishermen, who are the original environmentalists, and scientists, who not that long ago considered fish an endless resource. It explains why fish farming is not the answer—and why sustainable fishing is, and how to help return the oceans to their natural ecological balance. Interwoven with the book is a twelve-page graphic novel. Each beautifully illustrated chapter opener links to the next to form a larger fictional story that perfectly complements the text.

Book The Lady Or the Tiger and Other Stories By Frank R Stockton

Download or read book The Lady Or the Tiger and Other Stories By Frank R Stockton written by Frank R. Stockton and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-11-12 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Lady, or the Tiger?" is a much-anthologized short story written by Frank R. Stockton for publication in the magazine The Century in 1882. "The Lady, or the Tiger?" has entered the English language as an allegorical expression, a shorthand indication or signifier, for a problem that is unsolvable. The short story takes place in a land ruled by a semi-barbaric king. Some of the king's ideas are progressive, but others cause people to suffer. One of the king's innovations is the use of a public trial by ordeal as an agent of poetic justice, with guilt or innocence decided by the result of chance. A person accused of a crime is brought into a public arena and must choose one of two doors.[1] Behind one door is a lady whom the king has deemed an appropriate match for the accused; behind the other is a fierce, hungry tiger. Both doors are heavily soundproofed to prevent the accused from hearing what is behind each one. If he chooses the door with the lady behind it, he is innocent and must immediately marry her, but if he chooses the door with the tiger behind it, he is deemed guilty and is immediately devoured by it. The king learns that his daughter has a lover, a handsome and brave youth who is of lower status than the princess, and has him imprisoned to await trial. By the time that day comes, the princess has used her influence to learn the positions of the lady and the tiger behind the two doors. She has also discovered that the lady is someone whom she hates, thinking her to be a rival for the affections of the accused. When he looks to the princess for help, she discreetly indicates the door on his right, which he opens. The outcome of this choice is not revealed. Instead, the narrator departs from the story to summarize the princess's state of mind and her thoughts about directing the accused to one fate or the other, as she will lose him to either death or marriage. The story ends with the question, "And so I leave it with all of you: Which came out of the opened door - the lady, or the tiger?..".. Frank Richard Stockton (April 5, 1834 - April 20, 1902) was an American writer and humorist, best known today for a series of innovative children's fairy tales that were widely popular during the last decades of the 19th century.Born in Philadelphia in the year 1834, Stockton was the son of a prominent Methodist minister who discouraged him from a writing career. After he married Mary Ann Edwards Tuttle, they moved to Burlington, New Jersey.where he produced some of his first literary work. The couple then moved to Nutley, New Jersey. For years he supported himself as a wood engraver until his father's death in 1860; in 1867, he moved back to Philadelphia to write for a newspaper founded by his brother. His first fairy tale, "Ting-a-ling," was published that year in The Riverside Magazine; his first book collection appeared in 1870. He was also an editor for Hearth and Home magazine in the early 1870s. He died in 1902 of cerebral hemorrhage and is buried at The Woodlands in Philadelphia.

Book Classic Stories Refocused

Download or read book Classic Stories Refocused written by Brothers Grimm and published by . This book was released on 2021-01-30 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Refocuspublishing.com is a bookstore on a quest. Our mission is to advance the equality in representation of genders in literature. We take classic works of literature and refocus them to represent the opposite gender of the original work. This allows everyone to consume these works with equal representation of genders in lead and supporting characters. The wonderful aspect of refocusing the classics is that the characters tend to be fully developed. They are not mundane representations of male or female stereotypes. In order to withstand the test of time they had to be human, and therefore like humans, their gender is irrelevant to the story. Refocusing these classics allows for an immediate collection of stories focused on the human experience from the opposite gendered perspective. Our daughters can connect with female characters being bold, strong, and passionate. Our sons with characters that are kind, intelligent and supportive. Read our powerful stories, see the world differently, and join our quest to create gender equality in fiction! Volume One includes: The Golden Bird Refocused by The Brothers' Grimm, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Refocused by Washington Irving, The Ransom of Red Chief Refocused by O. Henry, Sonnet 18 Refocused by William Shakespeare, Sonnet 130 Refocused by William Shakespeare, Antigone Refocused by Sophocles, The Most Dangerous Game Refocused by Richard Connell, and The Gentleman, or the Tiger? Refocused by Frank R. Stockton and Refocus Publishing.
