Book Hazlitt on English Literature

Download or read book Hazlitt on English Literature written by William Hazlitt and published by anboco. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present selection of Hazlitt's critical essays has been planned to serve two important purposes. In the first place it provides the materials for an estimate of the character and scope of Hazlitt's contributions to criticism and so acquaints students with one of the greatest of English critics. And in the second place, what is perhaps more important, such a selection, embodying a series of appreciations of the great English writers, should prove helpful in the college teaching of literature. There is no great critic who by his readableness and comprehensiveness is as well qualified as Hazlitt to aid in bringing home to students the power and the beauty of the essential things in literature. There is, in him a splendid stimulating energy which has not yet been sufficiently utilized. The contents have been selected and arranged to present a chronological and almost continuous account of English literature from its beginning in the age of Elizabeth down to Hazlitt's own day, the period of the romantic revival. To the more strictly critical essays there have been added a few which reveal Hazlitt's intimate intercourse with books and also with their writers, whether he knew them in the flesh or only through the printed page. Such vivid revelations of personal contact contribute much to further the chief aim of this volume, which is to introduce the reader to a direct and spontaneous view of literature...: Chronology of Hazlitt's Life and Writings Introduction The Age of Elizabeth Spenser Shakspeare The Characters of Shakspeare's Plays Cymbeline Macbeth Iago Hamlet Romeo and Juliet Midsummernight's Dream Falstaff Twelfth Night Milton Pope On the Periodical Essayists The English Novelists Character of Mr. Burke Mr. Wordsworth Mr. Coleridge Mr. Southey Elia Sir Walter Scott Lord Byron On Poetry in General My First Acquaintance With Poets On the Conversation of Authors Of Persons One Would Wish To Have Seen On Reading Old Books

Book excerpt: Colin Wilson’s classic work is an essential guide to the mind-expanding experiences and discoveries of the occult in the 20th century. He produces a wonderfully skillful synthesis of the available material—one that sees the occult in the light of reason and reason in the light of the mystical and paranormal. The result is a wide-ranging survey of the subject that provides a comprehensive history of magic, an insightful exploration of our latent powers, and a journey of enlightenment. “I am very impressed by this book, not only by its erudition but…above all for the good-natured, unaffected charm of the author whose reasoning is never too far-fetched, who is never carried away by preposterous theories.”—Sunday Times

Book An Empire Nowhere

Download or read book An Empire Nowhere written by Jeffrey Knapp and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What caused England's literary renaissance? One answer has been such unprecedented developments as the European discovery of America. Yet England in the sixteenth century was far from an expanding nation. Not only did the Tudors lose England's sole remaining possessions on the Continent and, thanks to the Reformation, grow spiritually divided from the Continent as well, but every one of their attempts to colonize the New World actually failed. Jeffrey Knapp accounts for this strange combination of literary expansion and national isolation by showing how the English made a virtue of their increasing insularity. Ranging across a wide array of literary and extraliterary sources, Knapp argues that English poets rejected the worldly acquisitiveness of an empire like Spain's and took pride in England's material limitations as a sign of its spiritual strength. In the imaginary worlds of such fictions as Utopia, The Faerie Queene, and The Tempest, they sought a grander empire, founded on the "otherworldly" virtues of both England and poetry itself. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Book excerpt: International Bestseller: The essential guidebook to the history of magic and occultism—“the most interesting, informative, and thought-provoking book on [the occult]” (The Sunday Telegraph) Colin Wilson’s great classic work is a comprehensive history of mystery and magic. His genius lies in producing a skillful synthesis of the available material; clarifying without simplifying, seeing the occult in the light of reason and reason in the light of the mystical and paranormal. It is a journey of enlightenment—a wide-ranging survey of the whole subject and an insightful exploration of Man’s latent powers.
