Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mixtape Nostalgia: Culture, Memory, and Representation tells the story of the mixtape from its history in 1970s bootlegging to its resurgence as an icon of nostalgic analog technology. Burns looks at the history of the mixtape from the early 1980s and the rise of the cassette as a fundamental aspect of the music industry. Stories from music fans collecting hip hop mixtapes in the Bronx or recording songs off the radio permeate the book. She discusses the continued contemporary appeal of the mixtape as musicians, novelists, memoirists, playwrights, and even podcasters have used it as a metaphor for connection and identity. From Rob Sheffield’s Love is a Mix Tape to Questlove’s Mixtape Potluck Cookbook, Burns analyzes how the mixtape can function as a plot point, a stand-in for emotional connection, or an organizing structure. The book shows how creators use the iconography of the mixtape cassette to create ephemera, from coffee subscriptions to board games, which speaks to the appreciation of the tangible and the analog. The desire to find connection through sharing a physical artifact permeates the various creative uses of the mixtape. From blockbuster films like Guardians of the Galaxy to mixtape throw pillows, Burns highlights the mixtape as a site of collective memory tied to youth culture, community identity, and sharing music.

Download or read book The Preface written by Ross K. Tangedal and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-06 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on insights from the fields of textual criticism, bibliography, narratology, authorship studies, and book history, The Preface: American Authorship in the Twentieth Century examines the role that prefaces played in the development of professional authorship in America. Many of the prefaces written by American writers in the twentieth century catalogue the shifting landscape of a more self-consciously professionalized trade, one fraught with tension and compromise, and influenced by evolving reading publics. With analyses of Willa Cather, Ring Lardner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Robert Penn Warren, and Toni Morrison, Ross K. Tangedal argues that writers used prefaces as a means of expanding and complicating authority over their work and, ultimately, as a way to write about their careers. Tangedal’s approach offers a new way of examining American writers in the evolving literary marketplace of the twentieth century.

Book The Nostalgia of the Infinite

Download or read book The Nostalgia of the Infinite written by Roderick Dixon and published by LULU. This book was released on 2014-10-09 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Wilson, the orphaned son of Italian immigrants, is a jaded professional living in modern-day Melbourne. He has grown up with a detached interest in his Italian background, filtered through romantic notions of the family's chateau in Rufino, the story of a painting by the surrealist artist Giorgio de Chirico that vanished during the Nazi art thefts of World War II, and the exotic letters from his bohemian cousin Martin. It is one of these letters-along with a chance encounter with a young woman, Gabriella-that changes his ambivalence to intrigue and prompts a search that takes him to Italy. His quest soon becomes a last chance for redemption and rescue for the house at Rufino, for himself and Gabriella, and for his entire family. James's tale is interwoven with episodes from the life of his aunt Caterina in pre- and post-war Italy-and the thread that links the parallel stories is de Chirico's most enigmatic painting, The Nostalgia of the Infinite.

Book A Tale of Two Capitalisms

Download or read book A Tale of Two Capitalisms written by Supritha Rajan and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No questions are more pressing today than the ethical dimensions of global capitalism in relation to an unevenly secularized modernity. A Tale of Two Capitalisms offers a timely response to these questions by reexamining the intellectual history of capitalist economics during the nineteenth century. Rajan’s ambitious book traces the neglected relationships between nineteenth-century political economy, anthropology, and literature in order to demonstrate how these discourses buttress a dominant narrative of self-interested capitalism that obscures a submerged narrative within political economy. This submerged narrative discloses political economy’s role in burgeoning theories of religion, as well as its underlying ethos of reciprocity, communality, and just distribution. Drawing on an impressive range of literary, anthropological, and economic writings from the eighteenth through the twenty-first century, Rajan offers an inventive, interdisciplinary account of why this second narrative of capitalism has so long escaped our notice. The book presents an unprecedented genealogy of key anthropological and economic concepts, demonstrating how notions of sacrifice, the sacred, ritual, totemism, and magic remained conceptually intertwined with capitalist theories of value and exchange in both sociological and literary discourses. Rajan supplies an original framework for discussing the ethical ideals that continue to inform contemporary global capitalism and its fraught relationship to the secular. Its revisionary argument brings new insight into the history of capitalist thought and modernity that will engage scholars across a variety of disciplines.

Book The Twisted Tale of Glam Rock

Download or read book The Twisted Tale of Glam Rock written by Stuart Lenig and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-06-16 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering four decades of music history, this engaging book explores a genre of pop music that has been overlooked, under-reported, and ineffectively characterized—but which nevertheless remains immensely popular. The very qualities that made glam unusual and undervalued are now being reintroduced into our culture through video, music, and cyber and computer mediums, while artists such as Lady Gaga have made glam popular once more. Carefully explaining this misunderstood genre, The Twisted Tale of Glam Rock explores glam's attraction and the reasons it has endured. With the help of copious examples, the book covers the style from the pre-glam British invasion of 1964-69 through the classical glam era (1970-75); the metamorphosis into glam goth, glam metal, and glam new-romanticism (1976-90); and the style's reemergence (1990-present). It provides a theoretical basis for musicians' attraction to this highly visual and theatrical form of pop music and sets glam in a historical context, following the format through MTV, videos, and vibrant stage and theatre presentations. Finally, the book explores the hybridization of glam with other styles, illustrating how the genre has progressively reemerged as a premier form of performance pop.
