Book Neo Aramaic and Kurdish Folklore from Northern Iraq

Download or read book Neo Aramaic and Kurdish Folklore from Northern Iraq written by Geoffrey Khan and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comparative anthology showcases the rich and mutually intertwined folklore of three ethno-religious communities from northern Iraq: Aramaic-speaking (‘Syriac’) Christians, Kurdish Muslims and—to a lesser extent—Aramaic-speaking Jews. The first volume contains several introductory chapters on language, folkore motifs and narrative style, followed by samples of glossed texts in each language variety. The second volume is the anthology proper, presenting folklore narratives in several distinct varieties of North-Eastern Neo-Aramaic and Northern and Central Kurdish. The stories are accompanied by English translations. The material includes different genres such as folktales, legends, fables and anecdotes, and is organised into seven thematic units. The folkloristic material of these three communities is shared to a large extent. The anthology is, therefore, a testament to the intimate and long-standing relations between these three ethno-religious communities—relations that existed in a multilingual environment centuries before the modern era of nationalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume was compiled as a respectful tribute to A.S. van der Woude and presented to him on the occasion of his 65th birthday, which coincided with his retirement as professor of Old Testament and Intertestamental Studies at the University of Groningen, a chair he held for more than thirty years. The title of this Festschrift, The Scriptures and the Scrolls, reflects the two fields of study to which he has devoted his scholarly life, not only by doing research himself, but also by stimulating many of his colleagues to collaborate in publications initiated by him. The contributions, a mélange of studies covering the wide range of Van der Woude's interests, have been arranged according to the order: Hebrew Bible (following the sequence of the books), Apocrypha, Dead Sea Scrolls, and Rabbinic Tradition. Countries are adjusting at different paces and ways reflecting the source and magnitude of imbalances, availability of financing, competitiveness of the tradable sector and external environment. While emerging European countries with large pre-crisis imbalances and a fixed exchange rate regime have seen sharp current account adjustments and a rebound in growth, adjustment in the euro zone periphery countries, which are also carrying a legacy of pre-crisis CA imbalances, has been gradual with difficulties bringing back growth. This paper is an empirical investigation of current account adjustment in Europe with a focus on these two groups, looking at contributions from cyclical and other factors, and seeking to draw policy conclusions.

Book excerpt: The Institute of Jewish Studies, founded in 1954 by the late Alexander Altmann, is dedicated to the promotion of all aspects of scholarship in Jewish Studies and related fields. Its programmes include public lectures, seminars, and annual conferences. All lectures and conferences are open to the general public. This book is an in-depth study of the function of music in religious experience according to Rabbi Nahman of Bratzlay. It provides new insights on his unique doctrine of the "Good Points", which represent the core of loving kindness and holiness in the human soul, and the musical context in which they become both a means and a metaphor for spiritual transformation. Drawing on midrashic and kabbalistic sources, the book explores Nahman's perception of differenttypes of "tzadiqim" (religious leaders), including himself, and the special role music plays in their leadership. It highlights the importance of creativity and renewal in the messianic process that involves both music and loving kindness.

Book An Outline of the End Times

Download or read book An Outline of the End Times written by PT Nicholson and published by Partridge Africa. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Outline of the End Times is written by a layperson for laypeople. In an attempt to be comprehensive yet concise and thorough, PT Nicholson explores prophetic scripture in relation to the end times. He weighs up counterarguments of key issues that divide Christians regarding the tribulation and the millennium and carefully synthesizes an outline of events without overlooking difficulties. Combined with exhaustive scripture references, he uses charts, tables, maps, sketches, and graphs to explain issues and analyse topics as succinctly as possible. About 25 percent of the Bible is prophecy and, according to a well-known and respected scholar on Bible prophecy, John Walvoord, five hundred of one thousand prophetic events remain unfulfilled. Yet many Christians have only a vague notion of how end-time events will unfold due to inadequate teaching and a shortage of comprehensively researched books on the subject. An Outline of the End Times serves as a reference resource to help meet this need.
