It would be about as fair a question, whether the spring, summer, or autumn is the most favorable season for flowers. The only answer would be to ask, in turn, For what kind of flowers? If for anemones and violets, the spring; if for asters, the autumn. In like manner each stage of development has its poetry. In an age of external facts, when life has to do constantly with the outward, poetry will be objective. The epic and the drama both have their epoch here. But when life has become more internal, - when the outward affords little excitement, and the great struggles are carried on within the soul, - then poetry becomes subjective. As society advances, narrative poetry, or even prose fiction, has less place. It is in the imperfections of a wall, the crevices that time has made or unskilfulness has left, that the ivy and the wall-flower take their root. So an examination of the narrative literature of our own day would show that it has its root in the faults, not in the perfections, of our civilization. The earliest notices we have of Britain represent it as fruitful in barbarians, tin, and lead. It has continued so ever since. The Greeks knew something of it, but their notions were vague and uncertain; the Phoenicians, who were to the ancients what the American navigators are to the moderns, found out the island, and drove a profitable trade, exchanging trinkets, that always please the fancy of barbarians and children, for the useful metals which their advanced civilization knew how to put to good use. Herodotus is supposed to have included it in his Cassiterides or Tin islands. The barbarous condition of the inhabitants is indicated even by the name, which is derived from the old word brit, meaning painted: for they painted their bodies, like the North American Indians. Caesar made two expeditions into Britain, as an interlude in his Gallic conquests; and from his graphic pen we have two or three paragraphs describing their manners, - that is, all the manners they had; and it is curious to see how many traits are still preserved, in spite of innumerable mutations, and the silent action of more than eighteen centuries. Pecorwm, says he, magnus numerus; u they have a vast number of sheep"; they have them now. AEre utuntur importato; but this at present is unnecessary, as they have brass enough of their own. It certainly is so, if we adopt the popular impression. Romance, Poetry, and Rhetoric point, on the one hand, to the august conception of a one all-ruling deity, a Great Spirit, omniscient and omnipresent, and we are told to admire the untutored intellect which could conceive a thought too vast for Socrates and Plato. On the other hand, we find a chaos of degrading, ridiculous, and incoherent superstitions. A closer examination will show that the contradiction is more apparent than real. We will begin with the lowest forms of Indian belief, and thence trace it upward to the highest conceptions which the unassisted mind of the savage attained. To the Indian, the material world is sentient and intelligent. Birds, beasts, and reptiles have ears for human prayers, and are endowed with influence on human destiny. A mysterious and inexplicable power resides in inanimate things. They, too, can listen to the voice of man, and influence his life for evil or for good. Lakes, rivers, and waterfalls are sometimes the dwelling-place of spirits, but more frequently they are themselves living beings, to be propitiated by prayers and offerings.
