Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 91 These are the principal exceptions which need be made to Mr. Kemp's book. Taken altogether, it merits the highest commendation. Its leading principles are correct, and its practical directions are for the most part judicious, minute, and clearly expressed. Seldom have we seen so much matter condensed into so small a space. It must take rank among the best works Of the kind in the English language. The second book mentioned at the beginning of this article is one to which an interest Of a different sort attaches. It is an American production, the larger part of it written by the lamented Downing, and the Supplement by a friend of kindred spirit and acquirements. With the original work, the public had long been familiar: it had passed through six editions, and was still read and admired by all lovers of the refined pursuits which it advocates and explains. But, during the lapse Of eighteen years since its publication, new trees, shrubs, vines, and plants had been introduced, and longer experience had given its verdict on the merits Of the Older favorites; considerable improvement had been made in the methods of arranging and planting ornamental grounds; and the country, having advanced in wealth and refinement, demanded further instruction in the arts which embellish rural life. For these and other reasons, it seemed quite desirable that a new edition of this work should be prepared, bringing the subject in all respects up to the condition and wants of the present day. This has been done by Mr. Sargent. A gentleman Of fin ished scholarship, with a natural taste for arboriculture, cultivated by various reading and observation and by practice on his own estate, as well as liberalized by foreign travel, he was just the person to revise the pages of Downing, and to add to them whatever improvements had recently been made in this department. It will enhance the reader's interest in the work, to know that the labors of the editor were bestowed gratuitously, for the benefit of Mr. Downing's family, a voluntary enriching of the widow's bequest, Mr. Willis ob serves, for which, aside from the especial merits of his work. This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 135 The death of the greatest of American men of letters - a man who was at once an elemental thinker and an elemental power - immediately drew forth such a series of tributes to his genius and character, from such a wide variety of thoughtful minds, that it is difficult at this date to say anything of him which has not been said before. But perhaps, in surveying him as a poet, some additional reasons may be given in proof that he was original in the sense in which the word is applied to the recognized masters of song. In estimating the relative worth and rank of a poet, we are hound to consider not merely his possession of "the vision and the faculty divine," but the penetration and extent of his vision and the originality of his faculty. Did his spiritual insight go deeper than that of other poets of his age and generation? Did he advance beyond the recognized frontier of the ideal world in his time, and add a new province to it? Were his verses imitations or revelations? Did his poetic faculty work on old materials, adding only an individual flavor to new combinations of the old, or did he create or spiritually discern new materials for poetic treatment? In the case of Emerson, these questions can be answered only by a survey of what had been done by the great poets of the century, when (to use General Sheridan's significant phrase) he "took the affair in hand." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 26 Twenty-Three years have elapsed, since the work standing at the head of this article was given to the public by its distinguished author. It was originally prefixed to his Life of General Washington, as an Introduction necessary to the full understanding of the events of the revolution. It is now detached from that highly valuable work, the merits of which we hope, at some future period, to bring in an ample manner before our readers, if indeed there be any to whom they are unknown, and it is again presented to the public in the form of a distinct history of the colonies, adapted for an independent circulation. We entirely approve of the plan of originally annexing it to the Life of Washington; and we equally approve of its present separation in the manner adopted by the author, and for the reasons which he assigns. A general knowledge of the antecedent history of the colonies is indispensable, for a correct understanding of the history of the revolution, whether it be read for edification, or for the mere amusement of idle hours. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 70 Literary history is the least familiar kind of historical writing. It is, in some respects, the most difficult, requiring, and certainly, far the most laborious study. The facts for civil history we gather from personal experience, or from the examination of a comparatively few authors, whose statements the historian transfers, with such modification and commentary as he pleases, to his own pages. But in literary history, the books are the facts, and pretty substantial ones in many cases, which are not to be mastered at a glance, or on the report of another. It is a tedious process to read through a library in order to decide that the greater part is probably not worth reading at all. Literary history must come late in the intellectual development of a nation. It is the history of books, and there can be no history of books till books are written. It presupposes, moreover, a critical knowledge, - an acquaintance with the principles of taste, which can come only from a wide study and comparison of models. It is, therefore, necessarily the product of an advanced state of civilization and mental culture. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 144 Doubtless a vast majority of the Republican party, when once they found themselves successful, regretted that instead of the inexperienced backwoodsman, they did not have in the Presi dential chair the scholarly and veteran Seward, or the astute and plausible Chase. In truth, it was mainly because these men were called into his Cabinet that the party gave that confidence to his Administration at the outset that it did. They had the most unswerving confidence in his purity, and almost equal confidence in their skill. They believed him incapable of intentional wrong, and thought his advisers would show him how to do right. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 90 The question is often started, whether advance in civilization and knowledge is favorable to poetry. It would be about as fair a question, whether the spring, summer, or autumn is the most favorable season for flowers. The only answer would be to ask, in turn, For what kind of flowers? If for anemones and violets, the spring; if for asters, the autumn. In like manner each stage of development has its poetry. In an age of external facts, when life has to do constantly with the outward, poetry will be objective. The epic and the drama both have their epoch here. But when life has become more internal, - when the outward affords little excitement, and the great struggles are carried on within the soul, - then poetry becomes subjective. As society advances, narrative poetry, or even prose fiction, has less place. It is in the imperfections of a wall, the crevices that time has made or unskilfulness has left, that the ivy and the wall-flower take their root. So an examination of the narrative literature of our own day would show that it has its root in the faults, not in the perfections, of our civilization. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 147 Concord School of Philosophy by one of the keen newspaper men who have made American wit a modern discovery. The Concord students spent their time, he said. In trying to scrute the inscrutable and poss the impossible. The controversy in which Colonel Ingersoll has been the defendant is, I venture to say, not upon his part alone, an attempt to poss the impossible. Tactically considered, the discussion has to a marked extent fol lowed that simple military expedient known as firing wild. It strikes me that the chief reason for this is one for which no indi vidual party to the encounter can be held responsible least of all, the distinguished statesman whose scholarship, dignity, and repose have given value to the conflict if they have not won the day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, 1896, Vol. 163 What the great advocate then so unhesitatingly sug gested, many a thoughtful American since then has at least sus pected - that our great proclamation, as a piece of political literature, cannot stand the test of modern analysis; that it belongs to the immense class of over-praised productions; that it is, in fact, a stately patchwork of sweeping propositions of somewhat doubtful validity that it has long imposed upon man kind by the well-known effectiveness of verbal glitter and sound that, at the best, it is an example of orid political declamation belonging to the sophomoric period of our national life, a period which, as we atter ourselves, we have now outgrown. Nevertheless, it is to be noted that whatever authority the Declaration of Independence has acquired in the world, has been due to no lack of criticism, either at the time of its first appear ance, or since then; a fact which seems to tell in favor of its es sential worth and strength. From the date of its original publica tion down to the present moment, it has been attacked again and again, either in anger, or in contempt, by friends as well as by enemies of the American Revolution, by liberals in politics as well as by conservatives. It has been censured for its substance, it has been censured for its form, for its misstatements of fact, for its fallacies in reasoning, for its audacious novelties and para doxes, for its total lack of all novelty, for its repetition of old and threadbare statements, even for its downright plagiarisms; finally.
