Within a few days, we have received from Calcutta the Report of the Committee of Prison Discipline to the governor-general of India in Council, dated January 8th,1838; a volume of one hundred and thirty-eight quarto pages, together with an Appendix of valuable statistical and illustrative papers. France is also engaged in the same good work. In the speech from the throne, of the last year, we find the following cheer ing announcement Our penitentiary system has long called for all the attention of my' government, and you will have to examine a bill for its improvement. The same subject has also attracted the attention of the government of Prussia, but to what extent its labors have been carried, we have not at present the means of ascertaining. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 279: February, 1880 Presidential office after their second term, has become, by universal concur rence, a part of our republican system of government, and that any departure from this time-honored custom would be unwise, unpatriotic, and fraught with peril to our free institutions. The rules of the House were suspended, and the resolution passed on the very day of its introduction. No less than two hun dred and thirty-three votes were recorded in its favor. Only eigh teen members voted against it. That reiterated vociferation accomplished the purpose for which it was designed. It defeated the renomination of General Grant in 1876. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 140: January, 1885 Allow also that, under the glamour of the strife, to the eye of his Opponent a candidate for office is partially dehumanized and passes for the time into the order of insensates; Allow, further, that there is a widely accepted theory that, except for the immediate politi cal purpose, the objurgative language is divested of its usually offensive meaning, being by common consent canceled after election. These extenuations are admissible; but they are, after all, much too slender to save the vituperative habit from being an abomination. Download or read book The North American Review Vol 26 Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 26 Twenty-Three years have elapsed, since the work standing at the head of this article was given to the public by its distinguished author. It was originally prefixed to his Life of General Washington, as an Introduction necessary to the full understanding of the events of the revolution. It is now detached from that highly valuable work, the merits of which we hope, at some future period, to bring in an ample manner before our readers, if indeed there be any to whom they are unknown, and it is again presented to the public in the form of a distinct history of the colonies, adapted for an independent circulation. We entirely approve of the plan of originally annexing it to the Life of Washington; and we equally approve of its present separation in the manner adopted by the author, and for the reasons which he assigns. A general knowledge of the antecedent history of the colonies is indispensable, for a correct understanding of the history of the revolution, whether it be read for edification, or for the mere amusement of idle hours. Book The North American Review Vol 165 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The North American Review Vol 165 Classic Reprint written by A. T. Rice and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 165 Perhaps no person unconnected with the army contributed in so great a degree to General Grants success in the Civil War as the Hon. Elihu B. Washburne, to whom the following extremely interesting letters, and parts of letters, were addressed by the illustrious soldier during a period of eighteen years. These letters now appear in print for the first time. They are certainly of great historical value, and reveal in a very interesting way some of the strongest and most admirable traits of General Grants character, and his views upon men and affairs in the United States and in some of the countries which he visited in the course of his tour around the world. His remarks upon the character and result of British rule in India, and upon the progressive spirit of the Japanese people, will be read with special interest. Mr. Washburne (1816-1887) was the member of Congress from Galena, III., where Grant was employed at the beginning of the war. The two men first met at that time; they immediately became friends, and during the great struggle Washburne was the constant supporter and sturdy defender of the Silent Commander, who would never defend him self from the shameful charges that were frequently made against his private character, and also as a soldier. Wen Grant became President he appointed Mr. Washburne his Secretary of State, but after occupying that high office for a few weeks, he was sent as the American representative to France. He filled that position with pre-eminent ability and signal distinction, publishing after his return to the United States a valuable and interesting work in two octavo volumes entitled Recollections of a Minister to France, 1869-1877. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 147 Concord School of Philosophy by one of the keen newspaper men who have made American wit a modern discovery. The Concord students spent their time, he said. In trying to scrute the inscrutable and poss the impossible. The controversy in which Colonel Ingersoll has been the defendant is, I venture to say, not upon his part alone, an attempt to poss the impossible. Tactically considered, the discussion has to a marked extent fol lowed that simple military expedient known as firing wild. It strikes me that the chief reason for this is one for which no indi vidual party to the encounter can be held responsible least of all, the distinguished statesman whose scholarship, dignity, and repose have given value to the conflict if they have not won the day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 65 Republican institutions seem to have great power in fusing together and assimilating to each other the most heterogeneous elements of national character. Nearly all the nations of Europe have furnished their quota for making up the population of the United States, so that if each stock had preserved its original characteristics, the aggregate of the inhabitants of this country would have resembled the conglomerate or pudding-stone formation in geology, in which angular and rounded pebbles, with every variety of size, shape, and internal composition, are merely held together by a rocky cement, - united by juxtaposition, but by no chemical affinities. A monarchical government, which has extended its dominions by conquest, and holds the greater portion of them merely by the sword, causes only this imperfect and unnatural union among the several classes of its subjects; - the mortar which binds them may be more or less indurated, according to its degree of native strength, or to the lapse of time during which it has been exposed to the action of elemental forces; but the pebbles imbedded in it continue unchanged; their form remains as it was determined by mutual attrition, when they were free to roll over each other under the impulse of the waves and the resistance of the beach.
