Although he left us last Spring term, he is still remembered. Grove City may well rejoice to have him in their school. Then we think of Miss Weller, our able German and French teacher. Miss Walsh who is greatly missed has a fine position in the High School of her home town. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Normal Herald, Vol. 17: January, 1911 In all of these societies she discharged her duties with ability and faithfulness. She was an earnest student of the Bible and for forty years an admired and beloved Sabbath School teacher. Her known love for the great books of the world and her fondness for research led the students often to appeal to her for aid when investigating a subject. During the twenty-eight years in which she was a member of The Ingleside it is not recalled that she ever once failed to be ready with any part of the program assigned her. Ten years ago when it was proposed that she make her home with us at the Normal, fear was expressed by her friends that she might not find school life congenial to her. But no one could have more fully enjoyed the life and stir and youth about her. The revolving years had brought to her loss and grief but she had learned a glad patience and cheerfulness in the school of Christ. Though she was seventy-eight, she died while she was still young and making felt the sweet presence of a spirit that was never to know the dimness of age. Funeral services were held on Saturday night at the home of her nephew, Attorney J. Wood Clark, and interment was made in Oakland Cemetery, Sabbath afternoon. The room in which she lay, the parlor of the old homestead, was filled with beautiful flowers amid which she lay in the silent majesty of death. Farewell! Dear friend and sweet counselor, farewell! School will open again but the returning sessions will bring to us no more thy warm greeting. The quiet smile, the gentle rebuke, the wise word, the helpful hand are for us no more. The Great Teacher looked upon your work, pronounced it good, and called you higher. In the class rooms, societies, and Y. M. C. A., you can see the results of the training secured in The Lincoln Debating Club. The boys do not hesitate to get up before a class or an audience and express themselves, as they did formerly. They also learn how to conduct a meeting in a parliamentary manner - something everyone should be able to do. We are greatly indebted to Prof. Heckel, whose unceasing interest in the Club has been its mainspring of success. Blue pennants, with the word Lincoln in gray letters, have been secured. The brilliant success of the entertainment is due to Prof. H. E. Cogswell, director of Normal Conservatory. He delights in the prep aration and presentation of musical productions and puts his whole soul into perfecting the young people in their parts. The Conservatory orchestra rendered the score superbly and added much to the enjoyment of the opera. The Choral Society will repeat in the near future the Coleridge Taylor cycle of Hiawatha for chorus and orchestra. There are other novelties in chorus also to be taken up at rehearsals. Miss Cogswell is giving a series of organ recitals Sundays in Lent at four o'clock in the chapel with vocal assistance. The following programs were given the first and second Sundays. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Normal Herald, Vol. 17: April, 1911 As in the last contest, eminent men had been secured for judges, and no one seemed disposed to question their ability to decide the various numbers on their merits. For almost an hour before the contest began the Chapel rang with the songs and yells of the supporters of the red and the blue. Both sides were equipped with canes, to which streamers of ribbon were attached; on the one side, the bright red, and on the other a sea of blue. In the singing and cheering good-natured rivalry was shown, each trying to outdo the others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Men are too often inclined to think of the worth of an individual as trifling. Is it not true, however, that the world is indebted, for a great part of its history, to a certain few individuals? One' may not be so fortunate as to prove himself, 3. Daniel Webster, or an Alexander Hamilton, but he can be a person with set and serious purpose, battling against the evils of his day. He does not need to join himself to a band of fanatics. Happily, the aims of graduates seldom turn to such extremes. But is it not the right of society to expect especially firm and noble purposes in those whom it has schooled? Book Learning femininity in colonial India 1820 1932

Download or read book Learning femininity in colonial India 1820 1932 written by Tim Allender and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the colonial mentalities that shaped and were shaped by women living in colonial India between 1820 and 1932. Using a broad framework the book examines the many life experiences of these women and how their position changed, both personally and professionally, over this long period of study. Drawing on a rich documentary record from archives in the United Kingdom, India, Pakistan, North America, Ireland and Australia this book builds a clear picture of the colonial-configured changes that influenced women interacting with the colonial state. In the early nineteenth century the role of some women occupying colonial spaces in India was to provide emotional sustenance to expatriate European males serving away from the moral strictures of Britain. However, powerful colonial statecraft intervened in the middle of the century to racialise these women and give them a new official, moral purpose. Only some females could be teachers, chosen by their race as reliable transmitters of genteel accomplishment codes of European, middle-class femininity. Yet colonial female activism also had impact when pressing against these revised, official gender constructions. New geographies of female medical care outreach emerged. Roman Catholic teaching orders, whose activism was sponsored by piety, sought out other female colonial peripheries, some of which the state was then forced to accommodate. Ultimately the national movement built its own gender thresholds of interchange, ignoring the unproductive colonial learning models for females, infected as these models had become with the broader race, class and gender agendas of a fading raj. This book will appeal to students and academics working on the history of empire and imperialism, gender studies, postcolonial studies and the history of education.

Book The Quest for Streetcar Unionism in the Carolina Piedmont 1919 1922

Download or read book The Quest for Streetcar Unionism in the Carolina Piedmont 1919 1922 written by Jeffrey M. Leatherwood and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-23 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the courtroom doors closed in 1919, the tragic Charlotte Streetcar Strike has haunted the collective memory of the Carolina Piedmont region. During a season of labor unrest, it briefly made national headlines. Five men were killed and at least twelve others were wounded by gunfire during a demonstration against Southern Public Utilities, a subsidiary of James B. Duke’s Southern Power. For many who lived afterward in North Carolina’s “Queen City,” the strike and riot were events better left forgotten, while, for later generations, the “Battle of the Barn” has become an item of curiosity. As the centennial approaches, this book represents the result of over ten years’ worth of primary research about the Charlotte Streetcar Strike, a story that rightfully belongs to a larger narrative about the AFL’s campaign to organize transportation workers among the textile mill towns of North and South Carolina. Prior to the 1919 Charlotte Strike, the national streetcar union had overcome fierce anti-labor sentiment, from South Carolina’s state capital of Columbia to the Upcountry citadel of Spartanburg. To AFL organizers, Charlotte represented the last link in the Piedmont chain.
