Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Manga is one of Africa's most wild and remote regions: a hostile and unforgiving landscape inhabited by nomads. Situated in south-eastern Niger, in the shadow of the Old Salt Road, it has been mislaid by the modern world; no westerner had been seen there in living memory. The Nomad's Path is a beautifully-rendered account of a journey across this inhospitable region at a time of Tuareg insurgency in 2004 and 2008 . Carr sets out to explore the centuries-old link between the Barbary Coast and the Sahel along the Old Salt Road, while conjuring to life a lost wilderness and those who survive within it. At its heart is the story of a daring journey across the Sahel with the Tubu nomads. With tales of rebellion, lost civilisations, explorers - both intrepid and eccentric - and an epic seventeenth-century odyssey, Carr captures a sense of the intangible nature of the Sahel and delivers an evocative portrait of the Tubu - a people living on the tide-line of the Sahara and the edge of the world.

How do they find each other and how do they move on? TESTIMONIALS "C.C.'s book is amazing! Not only is it written beautifully but the adventures you are taken on are out of this world, the scenery descriptions make you feel like you are right there. I laughed and I cried and I fell in love with it. When I pick up a new book it has to grab me with the first sentence/paragraph and C.C.'s book did just that and continued right to the end. Outstanding story. If you love a good adventure, love/hate, crime, passion, and more book, I could go on because it has it all, then you'll love this book. I've already read it twice, but I want to read it again. I think you need to write another book, you are a natural. Book On the Trail of the Indo Europeans From Neolithic Steppe Nomads to Early Civilisations

Download or read book On the Trail of the Indo Europeans From Neolithic Steppe Nomads to Early Civilisations written by Harald Haarmann and published by marixverlag. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 3000 years, Indo-European languages have been spoken from India through Persia and into Europe. Where are the origins of this language family? How and when did its different linguistic branches emerge? The renowned historical linguist Harald Haarmann provides a graphic account of what we know today about the origins of Indo-European languages and cultures and how they came to be so widely disseminated. In this impressive study, he succeeds in drawing connections between linguistic findings, archaeological discoveries and the latest research into human genetics and climate history. In addition to linguistic affinities, he shows the economic, social and religious concepts that the early speakers of Indo-European languages had in common all the way from the Eastern Mediterranean to the Indus. Particular attention is devoted to the processes of assimilation with pre-Indo-European languages and civilisations. The result is a fascinating panorama of early "Indo-European globalisation" from the end of the last ice age to the early civilisations in Greece, Italy, Asia Minor, Persia and India.

Book Theorizing Global Order

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its prominent place in contemporary political discourse and international relations, the idea of the "global order" remains surprisingly sketchy. Though it's easy to identify the nations and actors who comprise the major players, but pinning down concrete definitions can be more difficult. This book not only clarifies a number of related key terms--including the use of international versus global and system versus order--but also offers a variety of perspectives for theorizing global order.

Book Reindeer Nomads Meet the Market

Download or read book Reindeer Nomads Meet the Market written by Florian Stammler and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2005 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Refuting essentialist notions of Nenets culture, the author explores the dialogue between reindeer nomads and the surrounding world and shows how global processes and concepts such as culture, property, and market are expressed in local practices. He demonstrates how reindeer nomads move freely between subsistence and commodity production; state-owned and private reindeer; animism, communism, and market relations; and territorial defence and cooperative knowledge of the land. This study makes an original and significant contribution to wider debates about nomadic pastoralism and to anthropological studies of trade, barter, property, and territoriality."--GoogleBooks

Book Conflict Security and the Reshaping of Society

Download or read book Conflict Security and the Reshaping of Society written by Alessandro Dal Lago and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-07-13 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A PDF version of this book is available for free in open access via www.tandfebooks.com as well as the OAPEN Library platform, www.oapen.org. It has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 3.0 license and is part of the OAPEN-UK research project. This book is an examination of the effect of contemporary wars (such as the 'War on Terror') on civil life at a global level. Contemporary literature on war is mainly devoted to recent changes in the theory and practice of warfare, particular those in which terrorists or insurgents are involved (for example, the 'revolution in military affairs', 'small wars', and so on). On the other hand, today's research on security is focused, among other themes, on the effects of the war on terrorism, and on civil liberties and social control. This volume connects these two fields of research, showing how 'war' and 'security' tend to exchange targets and forms of action as well as personnel (for instance, the spreading use of private contractors in wars and of military experts in the 'struggle for security') in modern society. This shows how, contrary to Clausewitz's belief war should be conceived of as a "continuation of politics by other means", the opposite statement is also true: that politics, insofar as it concerns security, can be defined as the 'continuation of war by other means'. This book will be of much interest to students of critical security studies, war and conflict studies, terrorism studies, sociology and IR in general. Salvatore Palidda is Professor of Sociology in the Faculty of Education at the University of Genoa. Alessandro Dal Lago is Professor of Sociology of Culture and Communication at the University of Genoa.
