Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nightside of Japan Many books have been written on Japan by the Europeans, but as everything was observed with their European eyes, the true features of the country of the "Rising Sun" could not be satisfactorily exhibited by them. This book is written by one of the Japanese, and although the subjects treated in the book are often trifling matters and belong to things not very important, yet it is sure the reader will find neither fallacies nor misunderstandings, into which foreigners are liable often to fall. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Japanese Nightingale The last rays of sunset were tingeing the land, lingering in splendor above the bay. The waters had caught the golden glow, and, miser-like, seemingly made effort to keep it with them; but, inexorably, the lowering sun drew away its gilding light, leaving the waters a dark green. The shadows began to darken, faint stars peeped out of the heavens, and slowly, unwillingly, the day's last ray followed the sunken sun to rest; and with its vanishment a pale moon stole overhead and threw a seraphic light over all things. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Maid of Japan She was of the sea, the little white maiden. Sixteen years ago a woman had come down to the shore on such a night as this with her life's ower, a tiny bud then, in her arms. She stood alone on the stainless sands and watched a great ship sail away under the moon; and her heart went with it in the keeping of one who neither knew nor cared. He was a man of a distant land, a lazy, blue - eyed man who Would not forego his pleasure, but preferredto have it authorised - a Philistine to whom some Calvinistic forefather had bequeathed a lively belief in the tortures of the damned. It was the strongest dogma of his creed, and no temptation was yielded to unless he could arrange to cheat the Prince of Darkness of the hold it might otherwise have given him upon a self-indulgent yet timorous soul. A week had almost passed since the boat had sailed from Vancouver, and the extremely bad weather encountered until this afternoon had prevented all but the most hardened good sailors from penetrating from below. Now, however, the wind and sea had somewhat abated, the first ray of sun had brought the storm-tossed and sea-sick from their berths, and the broad decks were soon swarming with passengers of both sexes, whose faces and general demeanour expressed entire satisfaction at their restored liberty. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The House of the Misty Star: A Romance of Youth and Hope and Love in Old Japan You see I 'd lived about fifty-eight years of solid monotony, broken only by the novelty of coming to Japan as a School teacher thirty years before and, although my soul yearned for the chance to indulge in the frills of romance, opportunity to do so was about the only thing that failed to knock at my door. From the time I heard the name of Ursula Priscilla Jenkins and knew it belonged to me, I can recall but one beautiful memory of my childhood. It is the face of my mother in its frame of poke bonnet and pink roses, as she leaned over to kiss me good-by. I never saw her again, nor my father. Yellow fever laid heavy tribute upon our southern United States. I was the only one left in the big house on the plantation, and my old black nurse was the sole survivor in the servants' quarters. She took me to an orphan asylum in a straggly little southern town where everything from river banks to complexions was mud color. Book Twenty Four Eyes

Download or read book Twenty Four Eyes written by Sakae Tsuboi and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-10 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty Four Eyes is a deeply pacifist Japanese novel based on the perversion and inhumanity of modern war. Set on Shodoshima, a small island in the Inland Sea, and covering a twenty–year period embracing prewar, war–time, and early postwar Japan, it centers on the relationship between a primary school teacher, Miss Oishi, and the twelve island children (the twenty–four eyes of the title) in her first class. In the course of the novel, Miss Oishi faces problems of acceptance by the children and their parents, then ideological criticism from the educational authorities, then wartime privations and losses in her family and among her pupils. The book concludes with a tearful graduation reunion between the bereaved teacher and her original pupils, whose ranks are sadly depleted by the suffering of the past decade. Differences of class, gender and political opinion are finally rendered less important than a common experience of suffering. Twenty Four Eyes first published in Japanese as Nijushi no Hitomi in 1952, immediately became a bestseller. It was made into a film two years later by Keisuke Kinoshita, a leading director, winning Best Film of the year. In 1987, it was filmed for a second time.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Loyal Ronins: An Historical Romance, Translated From the Japanese of Tamenga Shunsui During the long winter evenings of my childhood, when the lamp burned dimly in the paper lantern and but partly revealed the pictures on the screens, I often sat by the fire-bowl and listened with awed face to my honored mother, who, to compensate me for the gloom of the apartment, would relate stories of the Forty-seven Ronins, and thus illuminate my soul with the light of loyalty. It was from her honored lips I received the histories embodied in this work; therefore, if the book pleases, I beg the reader not to think of the old man of Yedo whose brush traces these characters, but to pay grateful respect to the spirit of my honored parent, whose eloquent descriptions I have so imperfectly reproduced, and whose body is now resting beneath the tall grass. And like the plum blossom are you, patiently bearing the suffering, Fearing neither the blast, nor the frost, nor the snow of the winter, Softly it sheddeth its petals, leaving the opening cherry Sweetly to taste of the joy of the many trees budding thereafter. l'ained are our hearts at the parting, but if the flower never fallelh, Never may it develop the glory of perfect fruition. So let us bear the pain of the cruel but brief separation, All for the sake of the fruit it will certainly bear hereafter. Like a brave soldier are you: God sent you to fight in our battles, Saving the perishing souls bound fast in the snare of the devil. Closely united in spirit, fighting still under our Captain, One shall our song be of triumph, when the long fight is all ended, Peacefully rest you your heart so, never a fear for the issue. Though you are out of our sight, and far far away o'er the waters, Lost to our vision as smoke-cloud loseth itself in the distance, Still standing there by the sea, we lovingly follow in spirit, Longing to hear of you safely reaching the shore of your homeland. Back again at Matsuye. After seeing the doctor, as every one advised, I returned with Hilda and Nurse Evans, who were waiting in Kobe for their passports. And not being up to much study, or other sensible pursuit, during the journey over the hills, I scribbled bits of its story there and back for you. Please skip, if you feel it too painfully elastic. Kuruma riding is jolty indeed, so much so, you cannot attempt to read. And as my very rebellious brain refuses a word of sense to retain. I think I may as well spend the time in pickling our journey in spirits of rhyme, Affording it thus the recreation of a total change of occupation. Our kuruma men are the greatest...
