Book The New Zealand Wars Ng Pakanga o Aotearoa

Download or read book The New Zealand Wars Ng Pakanga o Aotearoa written by Vincent O'Malley and published by Bridget Williams Books. This book was released on 2019 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Zealand Wars were a series of conflicts that profoundly shaped the course and direction of our nation’s history. Fought between the Crown and various groups of Māori between 1845 and 1872, the wars touched many aspects of life in nineteenth century New Zealand, even in those regions spared actual fighting. Physical remnants or reminders from these conflicts and their aftermath can be found all over the country, whether in central Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, or in more rural locations such as Te Pōrere or Te Awamutu. The wars are an integral part of the New Zealand story but we have not always cared to remember or acknowledge them. Today, however, interest in the wars is resurgent. Public figures are calling for the wars to be taught in all schools and a national day of commemoration was recently established. Following on from the best-selling The Great War for New Zealand, Vincent O'Malley's new book provides a highly accessible introduction to the causes, events and consequences of the New Zealand Wars. The text is supported by extensive full-colour illustrations as well as timelines, graphs and summary tables.

Book The New Zealand Wars and the Victorian Interpretation of Racial Conflict

Download or read book The New Zealand Wars and the Victorian Interpretation of Racial Conflict written by James Belich and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-16 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1986, James Belich's groundbreaking book and the television series based upon it transformed New Zealanders' understanding of New Zealand's great "civil war": struggles between Maori and Pakeha in the 19th century. Revealing the enormous tactical and military skill of Maori, and the inability of the Victorian interpretation of racial conflict to acknowledge those qualities, Belich's account of the New Zealand Wars offered a very different picture from the one previously given in historical works. This bestselling classic of New Zealand history and Belich's larger argument about the impact of historical interpretation resonates today.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Zealand Wars: A History of the Maori Campaigns and the Pioneering Period Oral witness has its historical value, as Mr. George Macaulay Trevelyan has explained in his history "Garibaldi and the Thousand": "You cannot cross-examine a book or manuscript: that is the weakness of written evidence, which the presence of oral evidence rectifies to some degree." To this it may be added that an historian cannot thoroughly grip the spirit in which wars were waged, or appreciate to the full the motives and feelings of the contending forces, unless he has had some personal knowledge of the combatants, and has mingled with members of the warring parties. The psychology of the struggle will elude the writer who delays his work until the last veteran, the last pioneer, and the last Maori of the old school have gone from among us. The foundation for this work of history-gathering was laid, unconsciously enough, in the writer's boyhood on a farthest-out farm on the King Country frontier. Since those youthful days on the battlefield of Orakau; where the shawl-kilted tattooed Maoris who had fought in the wars were familiar figures, and when the pakeha stalwarts who had carried rifle on many a bush war-path garrisoned the blockhouses and redoubts which still studded the Waikato border, the task of collecting the tales of old has been an of ten-renewed pleasure. In the course of writing this History it was necessary to examine a very large amount of material in book form, in official documents, and in newspaper-files. It was necessary also to explore battlefields and sites of fortifications throughout the North Island. Veterans of the wars, European and Maori, were sought out, sometimes in the most remote places, and the field notes made on the scenes of engagements and sieges were often enhanced in value by the presence of soldiers, settlers, or natives who had fought there and who were able to describe the actions on the spot. I take pleasure in recording here the names of those who gave valuable co-operation in this work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The New Zealand Wars

Book excerpt: Why did the New Zealand Wars occur? Who fought them and how did they proceed? And where were these battles fought? In The New Zealand Wars, Matthew Wright answers these questions in probing text supported by fact boxes and illustrations that make navigating these protracted wars easy. Building on his 2014 book on the same subject, Wright covers all of the wars major incidents, movements and people, including the Battle of Gate Pa, Pai Marire, and figures such as Colonel G.S. Whitmore and Te Kooti. He shows that the wars, which pitted British settlers and allied Māori against other Māori over a 30-year period, really ended up as a civil war fanning flames in many regions. The book features glossaries that explain military terms, and sidebars that explore subjects like Did Māori invent trench warfare?, and Food, horrible food. There are over 70 colour images, including of battle sites that we can visit today.

Book Landscapes of Conflict

Download or read book Landscapes of Conflict written by Nigel Prickett and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a traveller's guide to the historical sites of the New Zealand Wars. With clear helpful directions, it pinpoints all the major battle sites and provides a vivid commentary on the drama that enfolded at each site. Richly illustrated with black and white photographs, maps, and a 32-page colour insert with photographs and historical paintings. The New Zealand Wars (commonly termed The Maori Wars) of the 19th century were a major event in New Zealand's colonial history and their political reverberations are felt to this day. This book is a unique field guide to the other legacy of the Wars: dozens of battlegrounds, Maori and Pakeha fortifications and other historical sites that tell a tale of conflict and heroism. You can relive the British assault on Ohaewai; discover Te Kooti's and Tikowaru's mighty redoubts; visit the sites of British stockades; and visit the cemeteries commemorating the men and women who lost their lives. Each historical campaign is described vividly, and the 'places to visit' text and road maps make it easy to identify battle sites and points of interest.
