Book Migration and Urban Development

Download or read book Migration and Urban Development written by Brinley Thomas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a fascinating insight into the development of the nineteenth century Atlantic economy and the nature of contemporary migration. In particular the author argues that the assumption that the United States economy was the unmoved mover in the fluctuations of the international economy between 1860 and 1913 is incorrect. He presents evidence on regional housebuilding cycles in nineteenth-century Britain and shows that the British cycle was inverse to the American, and that both were primarily determined by demographic factors. From the mid-nineteenth century, Professor Thomas concludes, the countries of new settlement - America, Canada, Argentina and Australia - experienced long swings in urban development opposite in timing to those in Britain, the principal suppliers of funds. The result was a converse pattern of capital formation and export upsurges in Britain and her overseas borrowers. This book was first published in 1972.

Book The Fair Race s Darkest Hour

Download or read book The Fair Race s Darkest Hour written by C. T. (Editor) and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compared to the previous editions, in this 2018 edition of The Fair RaceÕs Darkest Hour, I have eliminated my introductory remarks to each chapter and also a dozen essays. Only the texts that have caused a considerable impact on my worldview have remained. The first two pieces, especially HamiltonÕs, explain the baffling phenomenon of Aryan ethnosuicide. However, I must say that I not only abridged HamiltonÕs piece for this collection but other essays as well. In this compilation, there are two fundamental texts. The first one, a book review by J.A. Sexton of Tom GoodrichÕs Hellstorm: The Death of Nazi Germany, 1944-1947, informs us about a Dantesque, heart-breaking Holocaust committed by the Allies on the Germans even after the war was over. The second is a translation from Spanish of an online book authored by a Catalonian blogger who uses the penname Evropa Soberana: Rome contra Judea; Judea contra Rome.

Book Opioid Dependence

    Book Details:
  • Author : Abraham Wikler
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-06-29
  • ISBN : 1468438662
  • Pages : 343 pages

Download or read book Opioid Dependence written by Abraham Wikler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major problem in the treatment of opioid dependence has been the persistence of relapse despite detoxification and enforced prolonged abstention from drug use, with or without conventional psychotherapy and other efforts at rehabilitation. Both initial addiction and subsequent relapses are usually ascribed to the quest for opioid-produced euphoria in persons with character disorders. This formulation is in accord with one-half of the common sense "pleasure-pain" principle, but it ignores the other half, namely, the long-lasting dysphoric consequences of re peated opioid use (distressing abstinence phenomena, sexual distur bances, disruption of marital status, unemployment, enmeshment in criminal activities, arrests, and imprisonment). In any case, the pleasure-pain principle is an empty tautology since it is incapable of refutation by any conceivable objective data that might seem contradic tory, inasmuch as it can be "saved" by invocation of untestable uncon scious intervening variables. Less tied to the pleasure-pain principle is the view that relapse is due to long-lasting sequelae of previous opioid addiction, resulting from complex conditioning processes, both operant and classical, involving pharmacological, environmental, social and personal variables. In this view, relapse is not simply a re-enactment of initial opioid use, but is a "disease, sui generis" a disease of its own kind. The factors contributing to this disease, sui generis are reviewed in this book.

Book The Education of Ronald Reagan

Download or read book The Education of Ronald Reagan written by Thomas W. Evans and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2006-12-05 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 1964, Ronald Reagan gave a televised speech in support of Republican presidential nominee Barry Goldwater. "The Speech," as it has come to be known, helped launch Ronald Reagan as a leading force in the American conservative movement. However, less than twenty years earlier, Reagan was a prominent Hollywood liberal, the president of the Screen Actors Guild, and a fervent supporter of FDR and Harry Truman. While many agree that Reagan's anticommunism grew out of his experiences with the Hollywood communists of the late 1940s, the origins of his conservative ideology have remained obscure. Based on a newly discovered collection of private papers as well as interviews and corporate documents, The Education of Ronald Reagan offers new insights into Reagan's ideological development and his political ascendancy. Thomas W. Evans links the eight years (1954-1962) in which Reagan worked for General Electric—acting as host of its television program, GE Theater, and traveling the country as the company's public-relations envoy-to his conversion to conservatism. In particular, Evans reveals the profound influence of GE executive Lemuel Boulware, who would become Reagan's political and ideological mentor. Boulware, known for his tough stance against union officials and his innovative corporate strategies to win over workers, championed the core tenets of modern American conservatism-free-market fundamentalism, anticommunism, lower taxes, and limited government. Building on the ideas and influence of Boulware, Reagan would soon begin his rise as a national political figure and an icon of the American conservative movement.
