This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New York Medical Journal, 1874, Vol. 20 Here is a result reached at the end of seven or eight years, by which this man's bladder is at last in the way of being regularly relieved without painful and damaging effort. I trust he will be saved from stone, although he did incur the danger of retention as I had foretold; for he can empty his bladder thoroughly now, and also wash it out with warm water at will, if necessary. But it is very clear to me, after observing his case through all these years, that if the patient had gone to work when he first applied to me for relief, and learned within the year to help himself with the catheter, he would have saved himself both time and torment, and that at this moment his bladder and kidneys would be in better con dition to serve him for the next ten years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New York Medical Journal, Vol. 19: January-June, 1874 Such is a general description of the different buildings required for the accommodation of the insane on the cottage plan. One of the principal objections urged against this plan is the cost - that it will exceed greatly, not only in the first cost of construction, but in the daily expense of carrying on an institution on this plan. We have been at some pains to procure estimates of the cost of the various buildings described above, and find them (upon the basis of five hundred patients) as follows, all con structed of brick. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New York Medical Journal, 1920, Vol. 111: Incorporating the Philadelphia Medical Journal and the Medical News Of these one hundred and twenty-eight patients, seventy-six, or over one half, received solid food between six and eight months and thirty or about twenty five per cent. At six months. After eight months the number suddenly dropped because most infants at this age had already received solids when brought to the physician and only those cases are here recorded in which the infants were ordered to receive solids as a therapeutic procedure for the first time when they came under my care. It must be borne in mind that none of these infants, except those suffering from severe diarrhea, received these prepared solids exclusively, i. E., milk in some form, as noted in the table, either human or properly adapted cow's milk or both, was simultaneously fed. It is demonstrable, however, that the addition of these substances to the diet in early infancy is not only harmless but decidedly advantageous and that less dependence need be placed upon milk as an exclusive article of sustenance during this period of existence. He concludes his introductory as follows:, As to those gentlemen who will neither read nor reason, but practise at a venture, and sport with the lives and limbs of their fellow-crea tures, I can only, with Dr. Huxham, advise them seriously to peruse the sixth commandment, which is, Thou shall not kill.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New York Medical Journal, Vol. 39: A Weekly Review of Medicine; January to June, 1884, Inclusive In the administration of justice there are also prescribed rules which must be observed to qualify one to practice law. A course of collegiate study, or an equivalent, and a num ber of years devoted to the science of the law and collateral studies are properly held to be indispensable. When a student is qualified to be received into the courts he takes a solemn oath, prescribed by a law of the commonwealth, that he will do no falsehood, nor consent to the doing of any in court; that he will not willingly pursue or promote any false, groundless, or unlawful suit; that he will delay no man for lucre or malice; that he will conduct himself with all good fidelity, as well to the courts as his clients. He thus becomes an officer of the courts and is recorded as such, and is liable to be stricken from the record and disqualified to appear as counsel if he proves to be un worthy. All these provisions are of the greatest impor tance to the community, since it is from this class of men that the judges of constitutional law, of the rights of the people to property, liberty, character, and life, are selected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New York Medical Journal, Vol. 114: Incorporating the Philadelphia Medical Journal and the Medical News; A Semimonthly Review of Medicine and Surgery; July to December, 1921, Inclusive On the other hand, it is perfectly definite that the blood in the adrenal veins contains adrenaline and that it contains more during stimulation of the splanchnic, but it does not follow from this that the substance thus liberated from the adrenal tissue acts upon the organism. To declare that a glandula1 product constitutes an internal secretion and as such has an effect upon the organism requires more than the mere recognition of its presence in the venous blood of the organ where it is formed; it must still be found in the blood of the left heart or in the blood of the general circulation; for it must pass into the circulation 1n order to reach the tissues upon which it shall act electively. Nothing proves a priori that the product found in the blood issuing from a gland issues into the general circulation; in fact, it might decompose or be rapidly destroyed in the mass of blood or else it might be diluted to a point where it would no longer have any effect It is, therefore, highly necessary that it should be found in the arterial blood if we are to affirm its hormonic hormozonic. In I ndia and China, it appears to have been long known and practised, according to peculiar modes. It was introduced into Constantinople from the Mama, at a time when it was in general use, not only in Asiatic countries, but also in Barbary. 11 was stated to Dr. Russel, who resided long in Aleppo, that at Bagdad and Bassora, when the small-pox appeared in any dis triet of these cities, it was the custom to give notice by a public crier, in order that those who were so inclined might take the opportunity to have their children inoculated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New York Medical Journal, 1875, Vol. 21 The enumeration I have now given nearly completes the list of regions to which the bloodless method is applicable. It cannot be employed in operations on the trunk, or on the face and neck, where surgeons would gladly, if possible, avail themselves of its advantages. These advantages, as claimed by Esmarch, are as follow First, the prevention of a great loss of blood during the larger Operations. It is assumed that this economy of the vital fluid will sometimes be the direct means of saving life that it will render more certain and speedy the healing process, and di minish the frequency of septicaemia and pyaemia. The other principal 'advantage of the method is the facility with which it enables the surgeon to accomplish deep and difficult dis sections, the tissues not being obscured by blood. It is said also to permit the easy extraction of foreign bodies, and the thorough examination of diseased bones and joints, with the view of deciding upon the extent of Operation necessary in any given case.
