It is assumed that this economy of the vital fluid will sometimes be the direct means of saving life that it will render more certain and speedy the healing process, and di minish the frequency of septicaemia and pyaemia. The other principal 'advantage of the method is the facility with which it enables the surgeon to accomplish deep and difficult dis sections, the tissues not being obscured by blood. It is said also to permit the easy extraction of foreign bodies, and the thorough examination of diseased bones and joints, with the view of deciding upon the extent of Operation necessary in any given case. I first tried faithfully to apply a pair of delicately-made Hodge's obstetric forceps to the head, but it was a failure, there being no adequate room for the introduction and adaptation of the second blade. I then tried faith fully, during half an hour, to reduce the head piecemeal with Meigs's craniotomy forceps, but there was so little room in the vagina and cervix for both the hand and instrument, that the progress was lamentably slow. To my mind the proposition was clear that many hours would be required for piecemeal delivery, that an anaesthetic would be absolutely necessary, and that the result of prolonged manipulation would be fearful. When a student is qualified to be received into the courts he takes a solemn oath, prescribed by a law of the commonwealth, that he will do no falsehood, nor consent to the doing of any in court; that he will not willingly pursue or promote any false, groundless, or unlawful suit; that he will delay no man for lucre or malice; that he will conduct himself with all good fidelity, as well to the courts as his clients. He thus becomes an officer of the courts and is recorded as such, and is liable to be stricken from the record and disqualified to appear as counsel if he proves to be un worthy. All these provisions are of the greatest impor tance to the community, since it is from this class of men that the judges of constitutional law, of the rights of the people to property, liberty, character, and life, are selected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brooklyn Medical Journal, Vol. 11: January-December, 1897 The studies of 0rd, Horsley, Semon, and others, have done much to advance our knowledge of the disease. The resemblance between myxedema in man, and the condition produced in ani mals by the removal of their thyroids was the incentive to Profes sor Horsley's experiments, which were almost demonstrative of the relationship between cachexia strumipriva and myxedema. Schiff and others showed that the effects of removal of the thyroid gland in animals could be modified by transplanting the thyroid glands. These observations induced Horsley to suggest trans planting thyroid glands in the bodies of man suffering from myx edema. Amelioration was produced by this procedure, but the glands were absorbed; besides the unpleasantness and possible risk in such a method. A glycerin-extract ofthe thyroid gland was next used on animals, after thyroidectomy, and the favorable results led brown-sequard to suggest that it might be useful in the myxe dema of man. Dr. Murry of Newcastle. England, appears to have been among the first, if not the first, to use the method. The difficulty in making an extract that would be stable, and the objection patients had to the hypodermic injection of the remedy, soon led to a trial, first of the cooked glands of sheep, and later to the dried and powdered gland, by Hector mackenzie. Since this preliminary work, of which only a briefsketch is here given, many cases have been reported of this disease in man and its treatment by thyroid gland. Space will not permit a reference to the published articles and cases, and we can give but a brief reference to the interesting discussions which have arisen as to the relationship, if any exist, between myxedema and other morbid conditions, such as Graves' disease, acromegaly, etc. The object of this article is to relate brie y the histories of a few cases of myxedema in young persons and the results of treatment with sheep's thyroids. I have ln variably used the desiccated thyroid prepared by Parke, Davis Co.; it has proved quite effective in these cases.
