If so, and we are to proceed according. To former customs, it certainly appears necessary that examinations of the dead should be made with great de liberation and accuracy. And nothing can be more conducive to this end, than that two or more professional men should be associated together. They will assist each other not merely mechanically, but by suggesting various points of in quiry. While he, who is most skilled in anatomy, is pursuing his dissection, the other may note the appearances as they successively present themselves - and the same course may be adopted while performing chemical experiments. The ad vantage will thus be attained, of having a complete account prepared at the moment of observation, which may be after wards reviewed both in coming to a decision on the case and in giving evidence before a jury. We all recognise the utility of discussion, in enabling us to weigh the merits of condict ing arguments, and the application of this may prevent many regrets, as well as prepare the mind for any difficulties that may be suggested. It should be recollected, that the opinion of a medical man before a coroner's jury, may consign an in dividual to a prison for months, and heap on him the imputa tion of the most horrid crimes. These causes are numerous, either as connected with the uterus, the fallopian tubes, or the ova ria. Several morbid changes in the condition of the uterus induce sterility in the female. I have found dysmenorrhoea the most frequent; those cases I allude to in which a decidu ous membrane is formed, and thrown off upon the evacuation ofthe menstrual discharge. I have noticed several instances of difficult menstruation accompanied by the formation of this substance, in all of which the patient has proved barren. I cannot admit, with some, that every case of painful menstrua tion is necessarily followed by the production of this cadu cous formation; though I believe there is no instance to be found in which the reverse of the position is not the fact. We are not to consider dysmenorrhoea, even when accompanied with the formation of the caducous membrane, as necessarily causing barrenness through life. A recent instance has con vinced me, that even a diseased action may take place in the uterus, which shall finally deprivethis viscus of its power to create this lining membrane, and that after excessive dis charges from the part continued for some considerable time, the womb may be restored to its wonted gestative and parta rient functions. Ppon apost mortem examination, I was led to believe that the cause of barrenness in one case was to be ascribed to an impervious condition of the fallopian tube.
