Book The New Testament for Learners Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New Testament for Learners Classic Reprint written by Henricus Oort and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Testament for Learners The Romans themselves were forbidden by law to go over to a foreign religion but the regulation was seldom enforced. Indeed, the religious condition of the ancient world made it impossible to carry it out; for faith in the national deities was tottering to its fall among Romans and Greeks alike. In fact, it had out-lived itself; and philosophy had powerfully contributed to its overthrow. A deep dissatisfaction made the want of something better keenly felt, and an ever stronger yearning after a purer conception of the nature and the will of the Deity threw many a one into the arms of Judaism, just as it afterwards prepared the way for Christianity. Book The New Testament Today Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New Testament Today Classic Reprint written by Ernest Findlay Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Testament Today Arouse suspicions of its message than those attempts to conceal or explain away the facts of its origin. The time has surely come when we should try to exchange the old attitude to scripture for one that will be more consistent with the results of modern enquiry. These results, it may be granted, are often one-sided, and in every matter of detail are Open to revision. Those who are best acquainted with them will be the first to admit that they are by no means final. But the main conclu sions at which modern scholars have arrived can no longer be questioned, and have to be taken into account in our estimate of the book. If it is to exercise its proper influence on the new age it must be presented as it really is, not as an ignorant piety has imagined it. The aim of the following chapters is to help, in some small way, towards the new presentation. The book of the primitive church was composed so long ago, out of so many strange elements, that it might seem to have nothing but a historical interest for the mind of our time. Yet it has proved itself, - and never more so than in these changeful days, - to be the most living of all books. Its conceptions of man's needs and duties, of his relation to God and to his fellow-men, have stood every test, and are likely to be enduring. How is it that the ancient book has this permanent value? It was formerly assumed that the riddle could only be answered by a theory of direct inspiration; but such a theory is no longer possible, nor is it necessary. Nothing essen tial is lost to the New Testament when we allow for the historical process whereby it came into being. Its permanent message becomes in many ways more intel ligible, and can be applied more closely to actual needs and circumstances. In any case, the book must be understood in the light of modern knowledge before it can fully appeal to the modern world. In these days. Book excerpt: A Translator's Testimony. J.B. Phillips says: "I have felt compelled to write this book. IT is my testimony to the historicity and reliability of the New Testament. "Few people have had such a close and constant contact with the New Testament as I have had. Even fewer have taken the trouble to understand the business of 'communication.' I say this in no spirit of conceit; it is a matter of simple fact. I therefore felt that it was high time that someone, who has spent the best years of his life in studying both the New Testament and good modern communicative English, spoke out. I do not care a rap what the 'avant-garde' scholars say; I do very much care what God says and does." from the Forward, RING OF TRUTH

Download or read book The Faith of the New Testament Classic Reprint written by Alexander Nairne and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of the New Testament A few weeks ago I listened in a College Chapel to this modern hope, this call to hope to-day though many an earlier hope had been disappointed. To - day, the preacher said, we are learning new reverence, reverence towards God and towards men: And rever ence for creeds we do not share. We shall slight no man for his nonconformity. We are passing beyond form and dogma. We look back - back beyond reformation, beyond councils of the church, beyond the doctors, beyond the great figure of Paul himself, and in the simple Gospel that was preached and under stood in Galilee we shall find a peace where all our warring sects may rest. And surely that might very rightly be. To believe what Jesus Christ taught and to be like him, that is the narrow and blessed way of the Gospel. Who dare add lesser tests to that supreme one? Book The Gospel in the New Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gospel in the New Testament Classic Reprint written by Charles Harold Dodd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the New Testament The world, indeed, into which Christianity came was painfully aware of the need for salvation. Before the first Christian missionaries started out, zealous preachers of other faiths were abroad in the Roman Empire, offering their various remedies to the sick soul. Some of these remedies bore a curious family likeness to some of the most modern ways of salvation, and a brief survey of them will not lead us too far afield. The thoughts of men, in spite of all changes, tend to run in a comparatively small variety of channels; and after all, we are, in a broad View of the limitless sweep of history, not so very far removed even in time from these first-century seekers of truth. Book The Text of the New Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Text of the New Testament Classic Reprint written by K. Lake and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Text of the New Testament One of the most necessary parts of the investigations of historians is to criticise the documents on which their researches are based, in order to be certain that the text which they are using really represents the original writing of the author. This criticism is usually known as Textual criticism, for the obvious reason that it deals with the test as opposed to the subject-matter. It is less commonly termed the Lower as Opposed to the Higher criticism, which deals not with the text as written by the author or editor of the document in question, but with the sources and methods used by him in making the text. Thus Higher criticism approaches the subject at a point higher 11 the stream of its existence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of New Testament Greek The publication of the Revised Version of our English New Testament, in 1881, marked the begin ning of a new interest in Bible study. Since that time not only the English, but the Greek and Hebrew have been studied with a zeal quite new. The sources are being more carefully examined to-day than ever before. Students are becoming more and more awake to the great importance of being able to judge of a certain passage for themselves rather than accepting without doubt or question whatever the authorities say in regard to it.
