Book excerpt: "Brilliantly illustrated by Michael Freeman's photography and commentary, this stunning volume is the first thorough-going compendium of the design revolution currently under way in the Orient. It demonstrates how imaginative architects and designers are re-interpreting time-honoured styles in new and exciting forms, using diverse imagery - from the breathtaking city-scapes of Beijing and Shanghai to the intricacy of design motifs - to convey the flavour of 21st century Asia. The book includes work by a raft of innovative young Asian designers and architects, including Zhang Xin and her award-winning Commune by the Great Wall. Westerners will have much to learn from oriental conceptual approaches to space, so clearly explained in this book, which forms a unique source of information and inspiration for all those concerned with the art of stylish modern living." - back cover.

Book Collecting Asian Art

Download or read book Collecting Asian Art written by Markéta Hánová and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than centering on the well-known collections in Western European and North American museums, Collecting Asian Art turns to museum collections of Asian art in Central Europe which emerged from the late 19th century onwards. Highlighting the dimensions of Central European connectedness, this volume explores how these collections evolved and changed under changing cultural and political conditions from the pre-World War I to the post-World War II periods. With a primary focus on collections of East Asian, South Asian, and West Asian art in Vienna, Prague, Berlin, Warsaw, Kraków, Budapest, and Ljubljana, it outlines the transregional connections and networks that gradually developed. Collecting Asian Art locates Asian art across the twentieth-century in Central Europe via discourse and ideology, and discusses key collections and the way individual collectors built their networks. It thus explores transregional connections that developed through collecting activities and strategies in the prewar, interwar and postwar eras. Contributors also examine the personal connections between a group of Indologists from postwar Prague and modernist Indian artists from the early 1950s to the 1980s and also discuss the systematic archiving of East Asian art collections in Slovenia. A concluding conversation looks at colonisation and decolonisation from a broader perspective by approaching it through recent art historical discussions on the global dimensions of modernism. By defining the region through its external relationships and its entanglements with regions across Asia rather than as a self-contained unit, the contributions in this volume outline how these transregional connections and networks evolved and changed over time, thus highlighting their singularity in comparison to developments in Western Europe. Based on recent research, Collecting Asian Art reveals neglected sources while reinterpreting well-known ones.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zen & Oriental Art is an indispensable, beautifully illustrated introduction to the influences of Zen Buddhism on Oriental painting, folk art, and architecture, with a special section on the role of Zen in twentieth-century art and architecture in the West. Author, Dr. Munsterberg quite naturally begins with an explanation of Zen Buddhism itself, and the historical development of Zen in India and China. Zen's particularly rapid adoption in Japan is covered in the next chapter, which is followed by sections on the Zen art of ink painting in both China and Japan. Also described are the influences of Zen on Japanese architecture, and the intimate connection of the religion with the Japanese tea ceremony. Of particular interest to Western readers is the chapter on Zen and twentieth-century Western art. "A knowledgeable and affable guide." —The Japan Times "There is a peacefulness that comes over one just leafing through this book." --Antiquarian Bookman

Download or read book Fresh Talk Daring Gazes written by Elaine H. Kim and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fresh Talk/Daring Gazes chronicles the blossoming of Asian American art and anticipates the growing democratization of American art and culture. Pairing work by twenty-four contemporary Asian American visual artists with responses provocatively drawn from cultural critics, other artists, activists, and intellectuals, this book explores themes of geographical movement, the sexuality of Asian bodies, colonization, miscegenation, hybrid forms of immigrant cultures, the loss of home, war, history, and memory. Elaine H. Kim's historical introduction charts the trajectory of Asian American art from the nineteenth century to the present, offering a comprehensive account of artists, major artworks, and major events. Commentaries by writers, artists, and cultural activists examine the work of visual artists such as Pacita Abad, Albert Chong, Y. David Chung, Allan deSouza, Michael Joo, Hung Liu, Yong Soon Min, Manuel Ocampo, PipoNguyen-Duy, Roger Shimomura, Carlos Villa, and Martin Wong. Prominent artists and critics such as Homi K. Bhabha, Luis Camnitzer, Enrique Chagoya, Gina Dent, Ellen Gallagher, Arturo Lindsay, Kobena Mercer, Griselda Pollock, Jolene Rickard, Faith Ringgold, Ella Shohat, Lowery Stokes Sims, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, and Hulleah Tsinhnahjinnie offer thought-provoking reflections on each artist. Sharon Mizota's extended captions further elucidate the paintings, graphics, photography, installations, and mixed-media constructions under discussion. As a set of dialogues, simultaneously visual and textual, Fresh Talk/Daring Gazes encourages the cross-cultural conversation that is shaping the emerging art of Asian Americans and of the United States in general. Alternately personal, intellectual, aesthetic, and political, these essays and the art they consider provide unique perspectives on both the past and the future of American art.

Book Studies in Hinduism

    Book Details:
  • Author : René Guénon
  • Publisher : Sophia Perennis
  • Release : 2001
  • ISBN : 9780900588709
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Studies in Hinduism written by René Guénon and published by Sophia Perennis. This book was released on 2001 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in Hinduism consists of articles published posthumously, to which has been added René Guénon's separate study, Eastern Metaphysics, the text of a lecture delivered at the Sorbonne. In this work Guénon completes his presentation of Hindu metaphysics, which he considered the most primordial and comprehensive body of spiritual teaching possessed by the human race, one capable of throwing light upon and illuminating the essence of every other Tradition. Of special interest are three chapters on various aspects of tantra-a doctrine profoundly misunderstood in the contemporary West-which Hindu authorities consider the spirituality most appropriate to the Kali Yuga, as well as a chapter on the sanatana dharma, the Hindu concept closest to the ancient and medieval Christian idea of the philosophia perennis, which led St Augustine to declare that Christianity has always existed, but only came to be so called after the coming of Christ. Included are extensive reviews of books on Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Ramana Maharshi, Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo Ghose, Rabindranath Tagore, Mircea Eliade, Paul Brunton, and others, as well as 40 pages of reviews of books and articles by Ananda K. Coomaraswamy. Leading Indian thinkers have called Guénon the most authentic expositor of Hindu metaphysics in any Western language.
