Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Monthly Magazine, 1853, Vol. 99 We dwell upon this part of the subject the more, because it conveys a true picture of the evils of a system which was so long and strenuous y advocated, to the protraction of an opposite commercial policy, and of a wiser course in raising the revenue. Yet this very system, namely, a free interchange of commodities, was offered by France to England at the treaty of Utrecht, under the auspices of De Torcy, the French minister; but it was regarded by the ruling party in parliament as an insidious attempt to injure Great Britain. It did, in fact, carry an appearance of equity too evidently not to be suspected by the influential party in the government of that time, with its strong feeling of private interest, and its crude notions of the true principles of traflic. Download or read book The New Monthly Magazine and Literary Journal Vol 1 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Monthly Magazine and Literary Journal, Vol. 1: January to June, 1821 The length of the articles has been sometimes found fault with, as obstructive to variety. Were the Editor really convinced that his papers could be compressed and multiplied with advan tage, he would immediately and zealously act on this suggestion. But he has strong grounds for believing, that no benefit could be derived from his doing se. Ah augmented variety of articles would make it necessary either that individual correspondents should write on a greater number of subjects, some of which would necessarily be foreign to their particular habits and abili ties; or that the circle of his contributors should be widely ex tended. But to a very great number of contributors, it would not be possible for the proprietors of this, or of any other work, to offer acknowledgments for their communications, at all wor thy of their acceptance. It is-a truth neither unknown nor dis honourable, that no important periodical publication can be sup ported by gratuitous contributions. And for the usefulness of the literary profession, it is of no slight consequence that its honest industry should be profitable. Ut setting aside, if they should be thought indelicate, all ideas of profit, it is still 't a sorry invitation to literary men, to tell them that, whether eir subiiect be grave or gay, they must be stinted to a very few pages, an that their sentences are to be counted on the hugers of the Editor. Sometimes, it is true, and with painful feelings, he has been obliged to abridge the contributions of his coadjutors; but, on the Whole, the system of compression could not be carried to rigour without either alienating useful writers, or requesting to contribute mere scraps and fragments. Were the public even clearly disposed to patronize the scrap - system of literature, a spirited editor would be disposed to set his face against their taste. But England has, in fact, of late shown decided symptoms of a predilection for a very different system of periodical writing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Monthly Magazine, 1861, Vol. 123 But every Federal system contains defects which home the efforts of the legislator. De Tocqueville, in his well-known work on Democracy in America, long ago pointed out the relative weakness of the govern ment of the Union as a defect inherent in the Federal system, that the sovereignty of the separate States was apparently weaker, but in reality stronger, than that of the Union, and that, above all, war was the main peril of confederations. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Monthly Magazine and Literary Journal, 1830, Vol. 30: Part III. Historical Register Things that are, and things that seem, Quickly succeed each other; and the writer's plan, if plan he can be said to have had, is a resolution that his reader shall not weary - that a change shall come o'er the spirit of his dream, before the threatened yawn is consummated; and in this we think he has been successful; fun, with all its hundred faults, the book is a highly entertaining one. The tamest part is that in which he has described Cape Town and its inhabitants; and the cause is probably this - that in a Very limited society, it would have been difficult to sketch the manners and the follies closely Without the suspicion of personality: if this was his motive, though, in avoiding it, he has occasionally become vague and desultory, we cannot blame him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Monthly Magazine, 1862, Vol. 126 Let the tax, then, eh'er no advantage either to free or slave labour. Let it only withdraw premiums and bounties from the maintenance of slavery. Thus far be at least impartial. Let the fiscal burden, in short, bear but some reason able relation to the difference in cost of free and slave labour, and to endure only while the taint and cheap advantage of slavery remain, but to be withdrawn the moment slavery is at an end. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Monthly Magazine and Literary Journal, 1826, Vol. 1: Original Papes Such were the feelings of the time, and little did he foresee how soon they would give place to others ofa far different character. There were moments also when his widowed heart fled from the scenes around to that distant land he had left behind; when, wandering through the groves of orange or lan tain trees, and Oppressed with fatigue and the score ing heats, he sunk own at the foot of one of them forsheltcr and rest - in these lonely moments, the home of his own land would rush on his thoughts, when no loneliness was on his heart, and his fair possessions were stretched around him; now, he was an outcast and wanderer. Then the white marble tomb, placed in his garden, rose to his view, where the mother and her infant slept together, and over which he had so often hun and wept. His own native home, and rugged cliffs, wild and dreary, fill up at last the picture of memory; his earl ears ofignorance and ace, when riches tempted him not, . And passion hired, not his heart. But t e shadows of night came while he dwelt intensely on these reveries, and the plaint of the wood-bird, and the increasing darkness of the grove, warned him to rise and depart. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Monthly Magazine and Literary Journal, 1824, Vol. 11: Original Papers Turns is a family named Partington, that has lately commenced its residence in Upper Harley-street. It consists of a father, a mother, two sons, and two daughters. The father is a sturdy, red-faced, good sort of man, and the mother is a slender, sallow, good sort of woman. John, the elder son, is with his father in the wine and spirit line, in America-square: Charles, the younger son, is in the law the two girls expect to be married. There is at presents great deal of Advice stirring about London, and the Partingtons have given and received more than their due proportion of it. It has often astonished me why so much of that commodity has been, and continues to be given nobody thanks you for it: indeed, nine people out of ten tell you, in pretty plain terms, to keep your advice to yourself - yet still we continue to give it.
