Book The New Jersey Churchscape

Download or read book The New Jersey Churchscape written by Frank L. Greenagel and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although best known as the Garden State, New Jersey could also be called the Church State. The state boasts thousands of houses of worship, with more than one thousand still standing that were built in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Frank L. Greenagel has photographed more than six hundred. He has selected two hundred of these historic landmarks for an examination of why they are sited where they are and why they look the way they do. Greenagel has sought out and included images of not only mainstream Christian churches, but also Jewish synagogues as well as the places of worship of religious groups such as the Moravians, the Church of the Brethren, and the Seventh Day Baptists. The photographs are arranged chronologically within sections on three major early settlement regions of the state ¾ the Hudson River, the Delaware River, and the Raritan Valley. For each building, Greenagel details the date of construction, the cultural, historic, and religious influences that shaped it, the architectural details that distinguish it, and what purpose it currently serves.

Book The Irish American Experience in New Jersey and Metropolitan New York

Download or read book The Irish American Experience in New Jersey and Metropolitan New York written by Marta Deyrup and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2013-11-29 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of nine essays exploring the Irish-American experience in the New Jersey and New York metropolitan area, both historically and today. The essays place the local Irish-American experience in the wider context of immigration studies, assimilation, and historical theory. Using case studies, interviews, scholarly research in primary historical documents and theory, and first-hand experience, the authors delve into what it has meant, and means, to be Irish American in the New Jersey and New York area, projecting what this ethnic identity will signify in years to come. Representing a variety of scholarly and professional disciplines, from archivists; to historians; to lawyers; to scholars of literature and theology; the authors share their own unique perspectives on the significance of the contributions of Irish-Americans to American life in various arenas. Each chapter is interdisciplinary, revealing the interconnections among cultural history, biography, contemporary events, and literary appreciation. It is through these intersections of disciplines, of past and present, of individual and community, that we can best analyze and appreciate the ways that Irish-Americans have shaped life in the New Jersey/New York area over the past two centuries.

Book Reconsidering Trenton

Download or read book Reconsidering Trenton written by Steven M. Richman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trenton, like the state of New Jersey, is often maligned these days, but there was a time when Trenton was the fiftieth largest city in the United States and boasted worldwide leaders in the iron and steel, rubber, and pottery industries. Like many cities of its comparative size and prowess that came of age in the Industrial Revolution, Trenton diminished in the aftermath of World War II and has become, for many, one of the "lost cities"--a place of lessened population, abandoned houses, and shuttered factories. Featuring a series of meditative explorations on the essence of the American post-industrial city through the prism of Trenton, this book explores the city's history, architecture, parks, factories, and neighborhoods through text and image, highlighting the importance of such post-industrial cities.

Book Ruptured Landscapes

Download or read book Ruptured Landscapes written by Helen Sooväli-Sepping and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume breaks new ground in the study of landscapes, both rural and urban. The innovative notion of this landscape collection is rupture. The book explores the ways in which societal, economic and cultural changes are transforming the meanings and understandings of landscapes. The text explores both how landscapes are contesting changes in society and changing society. The volume combines empirically fine-grained accounts of landscape rupture, from different parts of the world, with a sustained effort to explore, rethink and analytically extend the concept of rupture itself. The book therefore combines fresh empirical data with innovative theoretical approaches to open understanding of landscape as a dynamic, living entity subject to abrupt change and unpredictable disruptions. Through this dual reflection the volume is able to provide a powerful demonstration of the possibilities that are available for human action, social change and material landscape to combine.

Download or read book Respectable Methodism written by Daniel F. Flores and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-03-07 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wesleyan-Methodist movement entered American history as a fragment of British Methodism. It quickly took on a new identity in the early republic and grew into a vibrant denomination in the nineteenth century. The transitions from the rugged pioneer religion modeled by Bishop Francis Asbury to the urbane religion of industrial America was by design the goal of influential leaders of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Nathan Bangs was perhaps one of the most significant of such leaders. He rose from obscurity to the ranks of power and influence by refining patterns of worship, expanding denominational publishing, and structuring ministerial education. This study is concerned with the development of respectability in American Methodism. It also explores questions on how Bangs and other leaders dealt with in-house conflicts on issues related to race, slavery, and the poor.

Book An Architecture of Immanence

Download or read book An Architecture of Immanence written by Mark A. Torgerson and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-22 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Torgerson begins by discussing God's transcendence and immanence and showing how church architecture has traditionally interpreted these key concepts. He then traces the theological roots of immanence's priority from liberal theology and liturgical innovation to modern architecture. Next, Torgerson illustrates this new architecture of immanence through particular practitioners, focusing especially on the work of theologically savvy architect Edward Anders Sövik. Finally, he addresses the future of church architecture as congregations are buffeted by the twin forces of liturgical change and postmodernism.

Book Christianity and Belonging in Shimla North India

Download or read book Christianity and Belonging in Shimla North India written by Jonathan Miles-Watson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the material religion of contemporary Shimla, a vibrant postcolonial city, famed for its colonial heritage, set against the backdrop of the North-Western Himalayas. Jonathan Miles-Watson demonstrates that this landscape is able to peacefully reconcile the apparent tensions of faith, heritage and identity in a way that unseats traditional theories of religion, politics and heritage. It presents a mystery that is written in space through time; the key to unlocking this mystery lies in clear view, at the city's heart, in the contemporary material religion that surrounds nominally Christian sacred sites. Although the material religion centres on landscapes that are identifiable as Christian, the book demonstrates that Hindus, atheists and Sikhs all have a role to play in the mutually constitutive relations that lie at the centre of these knots of sacred entanglement. This book builds upon over a decade of research to present an ethnographic account of devotional practices that speaks to contemporary developments in both the anthropology of Christianity and material religion. Through this exploration the book answers the mystery of Shimla's postcolonial harmony, while complicating established theories in the anthropology of religion, postcolonial studies, mythography, heritage studies and material culture.

Book Churchscapes of the Jersey Shore

Download or read book Churchscapes of the Jersey Shore written by Frank L. Greenagel and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2011-05-23 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Place held sacred by a community, particularly ones with a rich architectural context, offer a fascinating subject for an artist. But there are temptations that ought to be resisted in a scholarly work, and so I have avoided an impulse to produce a "Great Churches of the Jersey Shore" kin of book. I have tried to look on all through the impartial lens of an Atget or Walk Evans or George Tice. The real subject of this inventory is not so much the architecture of the Jersey Shore and Pine Barrens communities, but the traditions and changes in function, scale, style, construction, and prominence of the churches, meetinghouses, and synagogues, and the cultural, social, economic and liturgical forces that shaped them. - from the Preface. The work includes all the surviving houses of worship in Ocean, Atlantic, Cape May, and the shore regions of Monmouth County, plus much of the Pine Barrens. Frank Greenagel's seminal work on the old churches and meetinghouses of New Jersey, titled 'The New Jersey Churchscape' was published by Rutgers University Press in 2001. His most recent book entitled 'An Architectural Stew' on the religious architecture of Middlesex County. 'Steeple Envy' is the title of his examination of the churches of Morris County, 'A Mighty Architectural Stout' is his work on the Essex County churchscape, and 'A Plausible Expression of Piety' details his work on the religious architecture of Hudson County. Greenagel is the author the article on religious architecture of the Encyclopedia of New Jersey, and of an essay on Methodist church architecture for 'New Jersey History,' the oldest scholarly journal published in America. His website dedicated to the old churches, meetinghouses and synagogues of the state, is www.njchurchscape.com. He is presently leading an effort to restore a late eighteenth-century Georgian manor in Phillipsburg." -Back cover.
