Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an analysis and discussion of the soul as a psychophysical process and its role in mental representation, meaning, understanding and agency. Grant Gillett and Walter Glannon combine contemporary neuroscience and philosophy to address fundamental issues about human existence and living and acting in the world. Based in part on Aristotle's hylomorphism and model of the psyche, their approach is informed by a neuroscientific model of the brain as a dynamic organ in which patterns of neural oscillation and synchronization are shaped by biological, social and cultural factors inside and outside of it. The authors provide a richer and more robust account of the soul, or mind, than other accounts by framing it in neuroscientific and philosophical terms that do not explain it away but explain it as something that is shaped by how it responds to the natural and social environment in enabling flexible and adaptive behavior.

Book The Evolution of the Sensitive Soul

Download or read book The Evolution of the Sensitive Soul written by Simona Ginsburg and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new theory about the origins of consciousness that finds learning to be the driving force in the evolutionary transition to basic consciousness. What marked the evolutionary transition from organisms that lacked consciousness to those with consciousness—to minimal subjective experiencing, or, as Aristotle described it, “the sensitive soul”? In this book, Simona Ginsburg and Eva Jablonka propose a new theory about the origin of consciousness that finds learning to be the driving force in the transition to basic consciousness. Using a methodology similar to that used by scientists when they identified the transition from non-life to life, Ginsburg and Jablonka suggest a set of criteria, identify a marker for the transition to minimal consciousness, and explore the far-reaching biological, psychological, and philosophical implications. After presenting the historical, neurobiological, and philosophical foundations of their analysis, Ginsburg and Jablonka propose that the evolutionary marker of basic or minimal consciousness is a complex form of associative learning, which they term unlimited associative learning (UAL). UAL enables an organism to ascribe motivational value to a novel, compound, non-reflex-inducing stimulus or action, and use it as the basis for future learning. Associative learning, Ginsburg and Jablonka argue, drove the Cambrian explosion and its massive diversification of organisms. Finally, Ginsburg and Jablonka propose symbolic language as a similar type of marker for the evolutionary transition to human rationality—to Aristotle's “rational soul.”

Book Soul Genetic Code Destiny

Download or read book Soul Genetic Code Destiny written by Ashley Ansara DVM PhD and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After many decades of life experiences that include living in three continents, Dr. Ashley Ansara has come to the realization that humankind should always be willing to seek knowledge, expand ourselves, be receptive to change, and trust our souls to guide us through this life. In Soul Genetic Code, Dr. Ansara shares a new logical hypothesis created from Egyptian belief systems to explain the dynamics of God’s relationship to humankind, the universal consciousness, and the humankind psychological consciousness (the mind, emotions, and free will to determine one’s destiny) to lead students of life to reconnect to their living souls and become more peaceful, loving, wise, and joyful in the world. Through insights shared to prompt the mind to question, the heart to vibrate, and an energetic movement toward the living soul’s truth, others will learn about energy and medicine; the concept of life essence and soul kinetics; the origin, biology, and DNA of the soul; the living soul in ancient Egypt, and much more. The hypothesis provides compelling evidence to accept the fact that genetic dictate our destiny. Environmental factors only put us where do we want to be but never determine where we end up with through life and the outcome of being alive on this earth. Soul Genetic Code offers an innovative, logical hypothesis derived from Egyptian belief systems to guide others on a journey of self-discovery to find their living soul’s truth and formalize their destiny

Book Scientific Evidence of the Existence of the Soul

Download or read book Scientific Evidence of the Existence of the Soul written by Benito F. Reyes and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For millions of people throughout the world, in both the East and the West, the existence of the soul is an accepted fact, and this view is a basic tenet in most of the great religions. Yet there are millions of others who do not accept the idea of a soul, and who have a purely mechanistic view of man as a product of evolution. The distinguished author of this work has built up his case for the existence of the soul by drawing on many sources, including the evidence of such phenomena as memory, sleep, dreams, hypnotism, extrasensory perception, and death. He links his thesis with philosophical concepts of both East and West. The work is well documented. This is a challenging book and it will provide absorbing reading for those who seek an answer to the meaning of man's existence. The author, Dr. Benito F. Reyes, is the first President of the University of the City of Manila (Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila) in the Philippines. Prior to his inauguration in 1968 he was for twenty-one years a professor at the Far Eastern University in Manila. In 1951-52 he taught at Boston University as a Fulbright-Smith-Mundt professor and in 1965 he was a Fulbright-Hays philosophy professor at the State University of New York. He lectured at Harvard, Brown, and other American universities. He has published a number of works on philosophy, psychology, and the quest for meaning."--front flap.

Book Psychology of the Spirit

Download or read book Psychology of the Spirit written by John G. Shobris and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While not all aspects of Carl Gustav Jung’s work have aged well, many of his ideas remain consistent with current concepts in behavioral psychology and neuroscience. Psychology of the Spirit reviews the lasting effects of Jung’s work and how it integrates with modern neuroscience, cognitive and behavioral studies, and Christian theology. It combines the mystical insights developed by Eastern Orthodox Christian theology with Jung’s vision of the psyche and the concept of the collective unconscious and its archetypes. Though written as a contribution to the field of psychology and as a tool for clinical practice, it is also accessible to lay readers interested in the relationship between the mind and the brain.

Download or read book Neuroscience and Human Soul written by P V Rai and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-02-19 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neuroscience and Human Soul, refers to the advancement of brain science over the past millennium and the age old concept of defining a human being as a unit of body, mind and soul, which is based on belief. Science has explored the structure and function of the human brain proving the neuronal activity as the basis of mind and also of human personality. However this brings us in conflict with the ancient belief on the soul, as being the core element of a human being. Neuroscience based on the evidence available from biological and clinical findings cannot fully deal with the soul, which has no material existence.Soul and consciousness are however essential elements of life, the concept of which has to be classified under the "Biology of Belief". Belief is a mental factor in humans, must undergo a rational analysis to become an ethical element. Under the newer aspects of brain science "Neuroplasticity", the human brain has the capability to form new neural circuits to fortify the beliefs into biological elements. The book deals with scientific and philosophical aspects of training one's mind and brain for the purpose of leading a comprehensive way of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a common belief that personal communion from the Holy Spirit to mankind ceased at the closure of the canon of scripture. The information presented in this book shows that interaction between the Holy Spirit and the mind of man enabled by the human spirit is bidirectional and continues in our time. Evidence presented from theological and scientific resources confirms the duality of the immaterial mind and the physical brain of man and substantiates the personal interaction between the Holy Spirit and the mind of human beings. The model for study is the neural synaptic network, incorporating the microsite hypothesis of Sir John C. Eccles. Dualist interaction has been substantiated by contemporary theologians and investigators in the neurosciences and information theory, building on advances in quantum wave theory. A hypothesis is offered by this author for a mechanism for dualist interaction involving probabilistic quantum tunneling across synaptic clefts. Transmission of specified information with meaning and purpose occurs within neural codes in spike trains of action potentials in synaptic networks. Through a lifetime of learning archived in memory, the mind of humans interprets neural codes enabled by the unique capacity for language. Communication from the Holy Spirit, as sender, to human minds, as recipients, draws upon current understandings of information and communication theory. The trigger for initiating spike trains as codes is postulated as an immaterial energy source by which the Holy Spirit communicates with the mind of man. Evidence presented in this book provides a compelling rationale for the reality of bidirectional communication with the living, personal Holy Spirit in our time. That Jesus Christ indwells those who accept his truth as a personal, living spirit is confirmation of the promise in John 14:1521. Interaction with God by his atoning grace through Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit gives receptive mankind comfort and counsel today to his glory.

Download or read book The Synaptic Gospel written by Christopher D. Rodkey and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2012-01-06 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Christopher D. Rodkey asks how the brain worships and responds by engaging ideas from neurological science, philosophy, ritual theory, and religious education. From this exploration, two new paradigms for pastoral ministry emerge. First, Rodkey proposes a “pan-generational” principle, advocating an empathy-based approach for fostering faith communities, a principle that is radically inclusive to all generations. Second, Rodkey argues that worship and religious education should converge to include a shared goal of teaching individuals to “live liturgically.” In The Synaptic Gospel, Rodkey argues that living and thinking liturgically are learned behaviors that may be promoted through pan-generational worship. The book concludes with a special emphasis on practical suggestions for youth ministry. The Synaptic Gospel will prove to be a useful theoretical tool for pastors, religious educators, youth ministers, church music professionals, and seminary students.

Book The Ecological Brain

Download or read book The Ecological Brain written by Luis H. Favela and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ecological Brain is the first book of its kind, using complexity science to integrate the seemingly disparate fields of ecological psychology and neuroscience. The book develops a unique framework for unifying investigations and explanations of mind that span brain, body, and environment: the NeuroEcological Nexus Theory (NExT). Beginning with an introduction to the history of the fields, the author provides an assessment of why ecological psychology and neuroscience are commonly viewed as irreconcilable methods for investigating and explaining cognition, intelligent behavior, and the systems that realize them. The book then progresses to its central aim: presenting a unified investigative and explanatory framework offering concepts, methods, and theories applicable across neural and ecological scales of investigation. By combining the core principles of ecological psychology, neural population dynamics, and synergetics under a unified complexity science approach, NExT offers a compressive investigative framework to explain and understand neural, bodily, and environmental contributions to perception-action and other forms of intelligent behavior and thought. The book progresses the conversation around the role of brains in ecological psychology, as well as bodies and environments in neuroscience. It is essential reading for all students of ecological psychology, perception, cognitive sciences, and neuroscience, as well as anyone interested in the history and philosophy of the brain/mind sciences and their state-of-the-art methods and theories.

Book Affective Neuroscience

Download or read book Affective Neuroscience written by Jaak Panksepp and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-09-30 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some investigators have argued that emotions, especially animal emotions, are illusory concepts outside the realm of scientific inquiry. However, with advances in neurobiology and neuroscience, researchers are demonstrating that this position is wrong as they move closer to a lasting understanding of the biology and psychology of emotion. In Affective Neuroscience, Jaak Panksepp provides the most up-to-date information about the brain-operating systems that organize the fundamental emotional tendencies of all mammals. Presenting complex material in a readable manner, the book offers a comprehensive summary of the fundamental neural sources of human and animal feelings, as well as a conceptual framework for studying emotional systems of the brain. Panksepp approaches emotions from the perspective of basic emotion theory but does not fail to address the complex issues raised by constructionist approaches. These issues include relations to human consciousness and the psychiatric implications of this knowledge. The book includes chapters on sleep and arousal, pleasure and fear systems, the sources of rage and anger, and the neural control of sexuality, as well as the more subtle emotions related to maternal care, social loss, and playfulness. Representing a synthetic integration of vast amounts of neurobehavioral knowledge, including relevant neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and neurochemistry, this book will be one of the most important contributions to understanding the biology of emotions since Darwins The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals
