Retrospective memory confidence judgments are making effective and efficient decisions based on one's memories. The neural processes involved in retrospective confidence ratings were investigated with EEG and fMRI using a recognition memory task designed such that participants also rated their confidence in their memory response. Correct trials (hits and correct rejections) were examined for differences related to the participants' level of confidence in their response. There were significant differences in electrophysiological activity (in the FN400 and the late parietal component) associated with confidence rating, with mean deflection increasing as confidence decreased. fMRI analysis revealed activity that appeared to be specific to the process of confidence rating. Activity was found to increase in the medial frontal, lateral frontal, and lateral parietal cortices as confidence decreases, but only for hits. In the lateral frontal, lateral parietal, and medial parietal cortices, activity decreased as confidence increased. These data indicate that there are neural mechanisms specifically related to making retrospective memory confidence judgments.

Book excerpt: Episodic retrieval is not a homogeneous process, but rather involves the engagement of several dissociable cognitive processes. These processes include those specialized for memory functions, such as hippocampally mediated pattern completion processes, as well as generic cognitive control processes linked with activity in the frontal cortex. Thus, age-related decline in episodic memory performance is not consistent across all aspects of retrieval, but dissociable subprocesses contributing to successful retrieval are affected to differing extents. To examine agerelated differences in processes contributing to retrieval, we investigated the neural correlates of recollection and post-retrieval monitoring in samples of younger and older adults using ERP (experiment 1: Ns 20 per group) and fMRI (experiment 2: Ns 28 per group). In experiment 1, we focused on modulation of recollection-related activity (operationalized as subjective report using the RKN procedure) as a function of source accuracy. In experiment 2, we examined how varying the global task demand of an associative recognition task by adding a secondary tone detection task might modulate prefrontal monitoring effects in younger and older adults. Across experiments, we found that both age groups activated a common set of regions supporting memory retrieval (in most cases), but that older adults demonstrated less modulation of recollection- and monitoring-related activity. This finding suggests that a breakdown in the ability to dynamically modulate activity supporting retrieval according to online task demands may be a key factor underlying the decline in memory performance with advancing age.

Book excerpt: Memory for sequences of events, an ability present in humans, nonhuman primates, and rodents, is a critical component of episodic memory and is known to decline in typical aging (Allen and Fortin, 2013; Allen et al., 2015; Fabiani and Friedman, 1997; Pinto-Hamuy and Linck, 1965; Roberts et al., 2014; Tolentino et al., 2012; Tulving, 1984). The use of a crossspecies task allows for complementary approaches in the rat and human in order to provide a greater understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying sequence memory ability. Using a non-spatial sequence memory paradigm in combination with blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we present evidence that memory for sequences of events activates the hippocampus and medial prefrontal cortex in humans, paralleling recording studies and temporary inactivations in rats performing the cross-species task. In addition, these areas show functional connectivity over the course of the task to a greater degree than other regions, supporting the hypothesis that sequence memory in the human is subserved by the hippocampus and medial prefrontal cortex and their functional interactions. After demonstrating homology for the neural substrates of sequence memory in the rat and human, we sought to investigate the behavioral and neural changes associated with typical aging. We found that typically aging older adults showed behavioral impairments on the sequence memory task. Equating performance between young and older adults, using BOLD fMRI we found evidence for similar neural substrates, but decreased activity in older adults. In addition, we found that functional connectivity between hippocampus and medial prefrontal cortex decreased with age, as did connectivity between other regions that in young adults showed high connectivity. Future studies using variants of the cross-species task in both rats and humans, combined with additional imaging modalities, will further elucidate the underlying neurobiological changes in typical aging.

A common way to measure monitoring is to have individuals predict their current learning state via metamemory judgments such as judgments of learning (JOLs). JOLs are subjective ratings regarding whether information will be remembered later. Prior research in young adults (YAs) suggests that the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) is involved in making JOLs. Although older adults (OAs) often show spared monitoring via JOLs, they might be able to maintain this ability by recruiting additional brain regions to compensate for alterations in the mPFC. Alternatively, OAs might have preserved monitoring because their neural correlates remain intact. YA and OA participants made JOLs on a 1-3 scale (Likely, Maybe, Unlikely) after viewing picture pairs during Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) scanning. We tested the extent that brain activity differed in OAs compared to YAs in the mPFC using region of interest analyses in prefrontal brain regions, which are often invoked as key sites for neural compensation. Behaviorally, no age differences were found, consistent with the sparing of metamemory in older age. However, OAs showed increased brain activity when compared to YAs for the accurate > inaccurate and maybe > inaccurate contrasts in the middle frontal gyrus. This supports the notion that additional regions besides the mPFC are recruited by OAs when making encoding-based metamemory judgments, which could be indicative of compensatory mechanisms.

Book excerpt: Successful recognition memory decisions depend on mnemonic and decision making processes that are computed by multiple, distributed brain areas. However, little is known about what computations these areas perform or how these areas are connected. Here, I collected behavioral and functional magnetic resonance imaging data from humans during the performance of an old-new recognition memory task with retrospective confidence judgments. Across runs, choice bias was successfully manipulated by providing rewards for correct responses that were either symmetric (equal reward for hits and correct rejections) or asymmetric (one response worth more than the other). Successful recognition memory was associated with activation in anterior prefrontal, parahippocampal, posterior cingulate, and parietal cortex. Resting state functional connectivity demonstrated that these brain areas are organized into two distinct networks. The first network includes parahippocampal cortex and angular gyrus. The second network includes lateral prefrontal cortex and intraparietal sulcus. The hippocampal-cortical network was most active during old vs. new decisions, did not differentiate hits from false alarms, and was differentially active during low confidence old and new judgments. In contrast, while the frontoparietal network was robustly activated by hits, it was not activated during either false alarms or low confidence old judgments. Thus, these two distinct networks can be distinguished by their relative connectivity to the medial temporal lobe vs. lateral prefrontal cortex and their responses during uncertain old judgments and errors. The choice bias manipulation had opposing effects on the parietal components of these networks, which further suggests these networks make distinct contributions to mnemonic decision making.
