Book The Netherlands in Fifty Maps

Download or read book The Netherlands in Fifty Maps written by Robert Tamsma and published by Amsterdam : Royal Dutch Geographical Society. This book was released on 1988 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical data relating to The Netherlands is presented in 50 maps that were originally published in the "Journal of Economic and Social Geography" between 1977 and 1986. Lengthy annotations accompanying each map provide important background information on the issues depicted. These elucidations were written with the foreign reader in mind, who is not expected to know much about the situation in The Netherlands. Map topics include: agriculture, cars, demography, education, employment, income, migration, on the dole, recreation facilities, social deprivation, voting, and water pollution. This wide range of themes reflects the radical changes in The Netherlands since the mid-1960s, for example, changing norms and values, a dramatic decrease in birth rate, a sweeping rise in divorce, the drop in marriage ratio which caused a more rapid rise in housing demand than in population growth, and the unprecedented pace of economic growth. Book Atlas of the Netherlands Flora

Download or read book Atlas of the Netherlands Flora written by J. Mennema and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an element of fascination which many people feel about geographical maps, because these maps allow fantasies about strange landscapes, other peoples, travels, even adventures. Distribution maps, depicting the area which a plant (or animal) species occupies, would appear to be less romantic, but they are equally able to exercise our imagination, or rather: to stimulate our scientific curiosity. Some distribution patterns are repeated time and time again, although rarely fully identical, and with their study comes the inescapable question: what is it that determines a plant's area of distribution? Almost immediately we find ourselves in the area of ecology, for it is the plant's demands of its environment (climate, soil) which determines where it will be able to grow and where not. However, that is not all there is to it, for species as well as landscapes have their history, and one needs to be informed about the climate and about the distribution of land and sea in the past, for instance, before one can understand present distributions. This aspect of change in space and time (historical plant geography) is possibly the most fascinating part of plant geography. However this atlas, covering a minuscule part of the world, is not meant to be primarily a book of historical plant geography. It is true that a dynamic aspect is very prominent, but this is on the smaller time-scale of man-made changes, which mostly led to impoverishments.

Book Why Is the Netherlands the Best Country

Download or read book Why Is the Netherlands the Best Country written by Siv Gustafsson and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation. Population economics is about your own life. Issues such as: optimal age at motherhood, career planning, birth timing, marriage and divorce are questions that every individual has to decide on. All these private decisions are both influenced by the economic situation and have economic consequences. Therefore economics of the family contributes both on the micro level for individuals making decisions and on the macro level for governments worrying for example about aging of the population. Because institutional arrangements differ between countries inter-county comparisons can explain behaviour. Book Power and Urban Space in Pre Modern Holland

Download or read book Power and Urban Space in Pre Modern Holland written by Clé Lesger and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-02-22 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities and urban societies have many faces. In this study, the pre-modern cities of Holland are presented as arenas where power relations between social classes are expressed in a more or less permanent appropriation of physical space and through discursive strategies. The continuity of the power relations in the cities of Holland, spanning centuries, makes it urgent to look not only at the assumption of urban space as an expression of power relations within society, but also at the contribution of this appropriation to the acceptance and continuity of the existing power relations in pre-modern Holland. Within this broad area, extensive attention is paid to: the very prominent and enduring appropriation of urban space in the field of housing; the less permanent, but violent appropriation of urban space during the public execution of scaffold punishments; the maintenance of public order by civic militias; and appropriation during riots and revolts. In addition, city descriptions, maps and pictures of the pre-modern cities of Holland are scrutinised for what they can reveal about the appropriation of urban spaces. These themes each have an extensive historiography, but they have never been brought together in an interpretative framework that fits in with Pierre Bourdieu's model of society and the work – of especially John Allen – on power until now.

Download or read book Amsterdam written by Russell Shorto and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An endlessly entertaining portrait of the city of Amsterdam and the ideas that make it unique, by the author of the acclaimed Island at the Center of the World Tourists know Amsterdam as a picturesque city of low-slung brick houses lining tidy canals; student travelers know it for its legal brothels and hash bars; art lovers know it for Rembrandt's glorious portraits. But the deeper history of Amsterdam, what makes it one of the most fascinating places on earth, is bound up in its unique geography-the constant battle of its citizens to keep the sea at bay and the democratic philosophy that this enduring struggle fostered. Amsterdam is the font of liberalism, in both its senses. Tolerance for free thinking and free love make it a place where, in the words of one of its mayors, "craziness is a value." But the city also fostered the deeper meaning of liberalism, one that profoundly influenced America: political and economic freedom. Amsterdam was home not only to religious dissidents and radical thinkers but to the world's first great global corporation. In this effortlessly erudite account, Russell Shorto traces the idiosyncratic evolution of Amsterdam, showing how such disparate elements as herring anatomy, naked Anabaptists parading through the streets, and an intimate gathering in a sixteenth-century wine-tasting room had a profound effect on Dutch-and world-history. Weaving in his own experiences of his adopted home, Shorto provides an ever-surprising, intellectually engaging story of Amsterdam.
