Book The Netherlands in Fifty Maps

Download or read book The Netherlands in Fifty Maps written by Robert Tamsma and published by Amsterdam : Royal Dutch Geographical Society. This book was released on 1988 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical data relating to The Netherlands is presented in 50 maps that were originally published in the "Journal of Economic and Social Geography" between 1977 and 1986. Lengthy annotations accompanying each map provide important background information on the issues depicted. These elucidations were written with the foreign reader in mind, who is not expected to know much about the situation in The Netherlands. Map topics include: agriculture, cars, demography, education, employment, income, migration, on the dole, recreation facilities, social deprivation, voting, and water pollution. This wide range of themes reflects the radical changes in The Netherlands since the mid-1960s, for example, changing norms and values, a dramatic decrease in birth rate, a sweeping rise in divorce, the drop in marriage ratio which caused a more rapid rise in housing demand than in population growth, and the unprecedented pace of economic growth. Book Singapore s Permanent Territorial Revolution

Download or read book Singapore s Permanent Territorial Revolution written by Rodolphe De Koninck and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2017-05-19 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since Singapore became an independent nation in 1965, its government has been intent on transforming the island’s environment. This has led to a nearly constant overhaul of the landscape, whether still natural or already manmade. Not only are the shape and dimensions of the main island and its subsidiary ones constantly modified so are their relief and hydrology. No stone is left unturned, literally, and, one could add, nor is a single cultural feature, be it a house, a factory, a road or a cemetery. Given one of Singapore’s unique feature, namely that the state is the sole landlord, all types of property in all parts of the island, rural as well as urban, were and remain subject to expropriation, fortunately always with due compensation. This atlas illustrates, essentially through diachronic mapping of the changing distribution of all forms of land use, the universality of what has become a tool of social management. By constantly “replanning” the rules of access to space, the Singaporean State is thus redefining territoriality, even in its minute details. This is one reason it has been able to consolidate its control over civil society, peacefully and to an extent rarely known in history.

Book Historical Dictionary of the Netherlands

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Netherlands written by Joop W. Koopmans and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2007-05-22 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Netherlands, frequently but erroneously called Holland, is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. In the past few decades, it has been undergoing many transformations made possible by its dynamic and fast-moving political landscape. It has shifted from fierce nationalism toward a self-image of tolerance and permissiveness: the national identity and self-consciousness has slowly eroded through decolonization and immigration. Unfortunately, several murders of prominent, controversial politicians have started yet another shift away from tolerance, and economic stagnation has bred pessimism. Nonetheless, despite many trials and tribulations, there has been real progress, and the Dutch have perhaps done a better job of coming to terms with their limitations than many others in the world. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Netherlands contains more than 700 cross-referenced dictionary entries on individual topics spanning the Netherlands' political, economic, and social system along with short biographies on important figures who have shaped the Netherlands' history. Supplementing the entries are a list of acronyms and abbreviations, a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and a bibliography, making this a superb quick reference on the Netherlands.
