Book excerpt: Physiology of Molluscs: A Collection of Selected Reviews is an informative two-volume sent that brings together some of the most important recent and unique developments in molluscan physiology. Volume Two includes reviews on the neural mechanisms of learning, reproductive behavior, responses to environmental stress and hormones, and neurotransmitters. With the rapid development of cutting-edge proteomic, molecular biological, and cellular imaging techniques, our understanding of molluscan physiology, specifically in the areas of neurobiology, reproductive biology, and shell formation, has increased exponentially over the last several years. With contributions from some of the world's leading experts in the field of molluscan physiology, this valuable two-volume set fills this void and will serve as an important resource for researchers, professors, and students.

Book Biology and Evolution of the Mollusca Volume 1

Download or read book Biology and Evolution of the Mollusca Volume 1 written by Winston Frank Ponder and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-11-18 with total page 900 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molluscs comprise the second largest phylum of animals (after arthropods), occurring in virtually all habitats. Some are commercially important, a few are pests and some carry diseases, while many non-marine molluscs are threatened by human impacts which have resulted in more extinctions than all tetrapod vertebrates combined. This book and its companion volume provide the first comprehensive account of the Mollusca in decades. Illustrated with hundreds of colour figures, it reviews molluscan biology, genomics, anatomy, physiology, fossil history, phylogeny and classification. This volume includes general chapters drawn from extensive and diverse literature on the anatomy and physiology of their structure, movement, reproduction, feeding, digestion, excretion, respiration, nervous system and sense organs. Other chapters review the natural history (including ecology) of molluscs, their interactions with humans, and assess research on the group. Key features of both volumes: up to date treatment with an extensive bibliography; thoroughly examines the current understanding of molluscan anatomy, physiology and development; reviews fossil history and phylogenetics; overviews ecology and economic values; and summarises research activity and suggests future directions for investigation. Winston F Ponder was a Principal Research Scientist at The Australian Museum in Sydney where he is currently a Research Fellow. He has published extensively over the last 55 years on the systematics, evolution, biology and conservation of marine and freshwater molluscs, as well as supervised post graduate students and run university courses. David R. Lindberg is former Chair of the Department of Integrative Biology, Director of the Museum of Paleontology, and Chair of the Berkeley Natural History Museums, all at the University of California. He has conducted research on the evolutionary history of marine organisms and their habitats on the rocky shores of the Pacific Rim for more than 40 years. The numerous elegant and interpretive illustrations were produced by Juliet Ponder.

Book Monograph of Living Chitons Mollusca Polyplacophora Volume 1 Order Neoloricata Lepidopleurina

Download or read book Monograph of Living Chitons Mollusca Polyplacophora Volume 1 Order Neoloricata Lepidopleurina written by Piet Kaas and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-10-17 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chitons form a peculiar and highly interesting class of molluscs, known with certainty to exist since the Ordovician, and widespread in all world seas to depths from 0 to over 7,000 m. In recent years taxonomists all over the world have much contributed to our knowledge of the chitons and their synonymy, so that the number of living species now amounts to some 800. The authors propose to not only compile all actual knowledge about the living chitons, but, where possible, a after a careful study of the type material, to systematically describe and illustrate every known -- or hitherto unknown -- species. In most cases the detailed figures are new and drawn by the senior author, P. Kaas. The Monograph of Living Chitons is planned to appear in ten volumes.

Book excerpt: This unique text presents the environmental history of the lowland delta of the rivers Rhine and Meuse. It is an ecological story of evolving human-environmental relations and how they cope with climate change and sea-level rise. The text offers a combination of in-depth ecology and environmental history. The synthesis presents a blueprint for future management and restoration, from progressive reclamation of land in the past, to adaptation of human needs to the forces of nature.

Download or read book Physiology of Mollusca written by Karl M. Wilbur and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physiology of Mollusca, Volume I focuses on the physiology of mollusks, as well as respiration, reproduction, embryogenesis, gastrulation, and shell formation and regeneration. The selection first offers information on the classification and structure of the Mollusca and the physiological aspects of the ecology of intertidal mollusks. Topics include respiration and excretion of shore mollusks, physiological variations in intertidal mollusks, Amphineura and Monoplacophora, Cephalopoda, Scaphopoda, and Gastropoda. The publication then evaluates the physiological aspects of ecology in nonmarine mollusks and reproduction of mollusks. The book touches on the development of mollusks and the culture of marine bivalve larvae. Discussions focus on gastrulation, embryogenesis, cleavage, and culture under laboratory conditions and in ponds and outdoor tanks. The manuscript then explains shell formation and regeneration, osmotic and ionic regulation, and muscle and neuromuscular physiology. The selection is highly recommended for readers interested in the physiology of mollusks.

Book Environmental Specimen Banking and Monitoring as Related to Banking

Download or read book Environmental Specimen Banking and Monitoring as Related to Banking written by R.A. Lewis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a great dispar.ity between the ability of the major industrial nations to produce and distribute chemicals and our ability to comprehend the nature and potential severity of unintended consequences for man, his life support systems and the environment generally. Furthermore, the gap between our ability to produce and distribute myriad chemicals and our ability to identify, understand or predict unfavorable environmental impacts may widen. As environmental scientists we are conscious of the interrelatedness, not only of environmental systems, but of nations as well. Materials are continually moved across boundaries by human as well as natural agencies. The extent, rate and nature of transfer for most pollutants is largely unknown. We can only guess which of the numerous chemicals produced are candidates for concern. More important still is our practical ignorance of the mechanisms of chronic effects upon natural systems and of the concentrations, combinations and circumstances that may lead to irreversibilities or to serious consequences for man. We know very little also regarding the potential for or the kinds of indirect effects that might occur. With respect to the environmentltself, we know little of its assimilative capacity with regard to widely dispersed pollutants and their transformation products. But what we do know is disquieting, and a much-improved system for the evaluation and management of toxic and hazardous chemicals is needed.
