Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Netherlands and the World War, Vol. 2: Studies in the War History of a Neutral IN the autumn of 1914, when the scientific study of the effects Of war upon modern life passed suddenly from theory to history, the Division Of Economics and History of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace proposed to adjust the program Of its re searches to the new and altered problems which the War presented. The existing program, which had been prepared as the result Of a conference of economists held at Berne in 1911, and which dealt with the facts then at hand, had just begun to Show the quality of its contributions; but for many reasons it could no longer be fol lowed Out. A plan was therefore drawn up at the request of the Director of the Division, in which it was proposed, by means of an historical survey, to attempt to measure the economic cost Of the War and the displacement which it was causing in the processes Of civilization. Such an Economic and Social History of the World War, it was felt, if undertaken by men of judicial temper and ade quate training, might ultimately, by reason of its scientific Obliga tions to truth, furnish data for the forming of sound public opinion, and thus contribute fundamentally toward the aims of an institu tion dedicated to the cause of international peace. Book The Royal Netherlands Navy of World War II

Download or read book The Royal Netherlands Navy of World War II written by Ryan K. Noppen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-20 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 19th and early 20th century, a combination of coastal defence for the homeland and fleet defence for the East Indies became the established naval strategy for the Royal Dutch Navy and set the template for the world wars. Battleships were too expensive to build and maintain, so after World War I, there was significant investment in submarine development and construction. A handful of modern light cruisers and a new class of destroyers were also constructed during the interwar years to serve as a small Fleet-in-Being in the East Indies, as well as to support the actions of the navy's submarines. The light cruiser HNLMS De Ruyter and the Java-class light cruisers were the most powerful units of the new fleet whilst the backbone of the destroyer fleet was the Admiralen-class and the Tromp-class of destroyer leaders. Beginning in December 1941, the Dutch Navy played a very active role in the defence of the East Indies against the Japanese during World War II. The Battle of the Java Sea at the end of February 1942 crushed Dutch naval power in the East Indies, sinking the cruisers Java and De Ruyter and killing Admiral Karel Doorman. However, several Dutch surface warships and submarines continued the fight against the Axis powers alongside the Allies until the end of World War II, including a pair of British-built destroyers, Van Galen and Tjerk Hiddes. This beautifully illustrated book from a leading scholar on Dutch military history provides a comprehensive guide to the Royal Netherlands Navy of the World War II period, complete with detailed cutaways and battleplates of the fleet in action.

Book excerpt: The eighth Canadian Battle Series volume is the little-told story of the tense final days of World War II, remembered in the Netherlands as “the sweetest of springs,” which saw the country’s liberation from German occupation. The Liberation Campaign, a series of fierce, desperate battles during the last three months of the war, was bittersweet. A nation’s freedom was won and the war concluded, but these final hostilities cost Canada 6,298 casualties, including 1,482 dead. With his trademark “you are there” style that draws upon official records, veteran memories, and a keen understanding of the combat experience, Mark Zuehlke brings to life this concluding chapter in the story of Canada in World War II. May 4, 2010, will mark the 65th anniversary of the Netherlands’ liberation.

Book excerpt: Twenty-five years after her passing, Audrey Hepburn remains the most beloved of all Hollywood stars, known as much for her role as UNICEF ambassador as for films like Roman Holiday and Breakfast at Tiffany's. Several biographies have chronicled her stardom, but none has covered her intense experiences through five years of Nazi occupation in the Netherlands. According to her son, Luca Dotti, "The war made my mother who she was." Audrey Hepburn's war included participation in the Dutch Resistance, working as a doctor's assistant during the "Bridge Too Far" battle of Arnhem, the brutal execution of her uncle, and the ordeal of the Hunger Winter of 1944. She also had to contend with the fact that her father was a Nazi agent and her mother was pro-Nazi for the first two years of the occupation. But the war years also brought triumphs as Audrey became Arnhem's most famous young ballerina. Audrey's own reminiscences, new interviews with people who knew her in the war, wartime diaries, and research in classified Dutch archives shed light on the riveting, untold story of Audrey Hepburn under fire in World War II. Also included is a section of color and black-and-white photos. Many of these images are from Audrey's personal collection and are published here for the first time.

Book The Netherlands and World War I

Download or read book The Netherlands and World War I written by Hubert van Tuyll van Serooskerken and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War I the Netherlands was situated squarely between two warring great powers, Britain and Germany, and on the edge of the war zone itself. Isolationism was impossible; strict neutrality was inadequate. The Netherlands nevertheless escaped the war, mainly because of its own actions. This book is the story of the people who managed this escape. The first part of the book examines the pre-war situation, espionage against Germany, and the mobilization of 1914. Succeeding chapters cover the military-diplomatic balancing act during the war, the attempted revolution of 1918, and the near-disaster at Versailles. The book concludes with a consideration of major issues. This work is intended to appeal to a broad audience, including students of World War I, modern European history, diplomatic history, military history, and peace studies.
