Download or read book Gaining and Retaining a Job written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2005-10-13 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2004, of the 6.7 million disabled people of working age in Britain, 50 per cent were in employment compared to 75 per cent of the working age population as a whole. The Government has made a commitment to increase the employment rate of disabled people and to reduce the difference between their employment rate and the overall rate by 2006. This NAO report examines the barriers faced by disabled people in finding and retaining employment, the specialist programmes and schemes provided by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) to address this issue, the quality and accessibility of support available, and the cost effectiveness of such schemes. The report finds that the DWP funds a broad range of schemes (which are managed by Jobcentre Plus and contracted out to a range of providers in the public, private and voluntary sectors) and is on course to meet its target for increasing the employment rate of disabled people. However, more progress is needed to ensure such programmes benefit a wider number of people, and recommendations made include the need to establish a more flexible modular approach to programmes; to improve data collection and verification schemes to monitor services; to promote enhanced efficiency through better contracting; to provide greater support and training for advisers; to improve the cost effectiveness of Remploy businesses and to ensure better support to help individuals find alternative employment if necessary; and for the DWP to develop a clearer strategy for engaging with employers at a local level.

Book Improving the Odds

Download or read book Improving the Odds written by Burt S. Barnow and published by The Urban Insitute. This book was released on 2000 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The labor market has changed dramatically in recent decades. In the 1980s an average of 2 million workers each year lost their jobs because of the increasingly global economy, rapid advances in technology, and corporate downsizing. During the same period, immigration increased and Congress passed welfare reform legislation that required many more Americans to join the workforce. Legislators have looked closely at federal job training programs in recent years, and in 1998 passed the two major acts mandating change. In Improving the Odds, experts on labor policy explore the effects of current programs on earnings and employment, recommend improvements in programs, and assess the methodologies used to measure their effectiveness. The editors offer several strategies to help policymakers design programs that fulfill the promise of keeping workers out of poverty. Contents: -Publicly Funded Training in a Changing Labour Market (Burt S. Barnow and Christopher T. King) -The Economic, Demographic, and Social Context of Future Employment and Training Programs (Frank Bennici, Steven Mangum, and A ndrew M. Lerman) -Customized Training for Employers: Training People for Jobs That Exist and Employers Who Want to Hire Them (Kellie Isbell, John Trutko, and vBurt S. Book Policy Analysis as Problem Solving

Download or read book Policy Analysis as Problem Solving written by Rachel Meltzer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing extensively from real-life cases, Policy Analysis as Problem Solving helps students develop the analytic skills necessary to advise government officials and nonprofit executives on a wide range of policy issues. Unlike other texts, Policy Analysis as Problem Solving employs a pragmatic, heterodox approach to the field. Whereas most texts on policy analysis are anchored in microeconomics, emphasizing economic efficiency, this book takes a broader view, using realistic examples to illustrate the full scope of policy analysis. The book provides succinct but thorough discussions of the key elements of the policy-analytic process, including problem definition, objectives and criteria, development of alternative policy options, and analysis of these alternatives. The text’s practical approach and extensive downloadable resources—which include interviews, case studies, and further readings—will be of enormous benefit to both students and instructors of policy analysis.

Book Costs and Benefits of Preventing Crime

Download or read book Costs and Benefits of Preventing Crime written by Brandon Welsh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the cost savings from preventing a typical burglary, robbery, assault, or even a criminal career? Who benefits from these savings? How often do the benefits from preventing crime or criminal behavior exceed the resources spent on preventing or controlling crime? Is it more cost-effective to invest in early childhood programs or juvenile boot camps to reduce criminal offending? These are some of the important questions that face policymakers in crime and justice today. Answering them is no easy task. Nevertheless, it is important to provide answers in order to ensure that the dollars devoted to crime reduction are spent as efficiently as possible. The principle aim of Costs and Benefits of Preventing Crime is to report on and assess the present state of knowledge on the monetary costs and benefits of crime prevention programs. Remarkably, this crucial topic has rarely been studied up to the present time. This book examines key methodological issues, reports on the most up-to-date research findings, discusses international policy perspectives, and presents an agenda for future research and policy development on the economic analysis of crime prevention. Throughout, it addresses the important question of how governments should be allocating scarce resources to make crime prevention policy and practice more effective and to produce the greatest economic benefits to society. The book brings together research and perspectives from across North America, Europe, and Australia.
