Book The American Vice Presidency Reconsidered

Download or read book The American Vice Presidency Reconsidered written by Jody C. Baumgartner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2006-07-30 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1960 the office of the vice presidency of the United States has evolved into a fundamentally different institution than the one the founders envisioned, attracting better-qualified aspirants who may be called upon to perform a variety of important tasks. This book offers a corrective to the overwhelmingly negative view that Americans have had of their vice presidents by demonstrating how the role has changed over time. In addition, Baumgartner examines those who were candidates for vice president but who were not elected. The book is organized thematically according to the career path of the vice president, from the selection process through campaign and nomination to election, service in office, and post-White House contributions. John Adams famously called the vice presidency, the most insignificant office that ever the invention of man contrived or his imagination conceived. Harry Truman called it, about as useful as a cow's fifth teat. How things have changed in a world where many consider Vice President Dick Cheney the most powerful figure in the current administration. Since 1960 the office of the vice presidency of the United States has evolved into a fundamentally different institution than the one the founders envisioned, attracting better-qualified aspirants who may be called upon to perform a variety of important tasks. No longer a ceremonial figurehead or legislative drudge, the vice president today consults closely with the president and plays an important role in executive decisions. Those who are chosen as running mates are examined more thoroughly than ever before, not merely for the boost they might give the presidential candidate in the general election, but also for the kind of president they might be if fate called upon them to serve. In a book that is as readable as it is fascinating, Baumgartner offers a corrective to the overwhelmingly negative view Americans have had of their vice presidents by demonstrating how the role has changed over time. Setting the stage with a visit to the Constitutional Convention and a brief look at pre-modern vice presidents, he examines the 19 men and one woman who have been vice presidents or candidates for the office since 1960. His insightful book is organized thematically according to the career path of the vice president-from the selection process through the campaign and nomination to election, service in office, and post-White House contributions.

Book The White House Vice Presidency

Download or read book The White House Vice Presidency written by Joel K. Goldstein and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2017-03-03 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I am nothing, but I may be everything," John Adams, the first vice president, wrote of his office. And for most of American history, the "nothing" part of Adams's formulation accurately captured the importance of the vice presidency, at least as long as the president had a heartbeat. But a job that once was "not worth a bucket of warm spit," according to John Nance Garner, became, in the hands of the most recent vice presidents, critical to the governing of the country on an ongoing basis. It is this dramatic development of the nation's second office that Joel K. Goldstein traces and explains in The White House Vice Presidency. The rise of the vice presidency took a sharp upward trajectory with the vice presidency of Walter Mondale. In Goldstein's work we see how Mondale and Jimmy Carter designed and implemented a new model of the office that allowed the vice president to become a close presidential adviser and representative on missions that mattered. Goldstein takes us through the vice presidents from Mondale to Joe Biden, presenting the arrangements each had with his respective president, showing elements of continuity but also variations in the office, and describing the challenges each faced and the work each did. The book also examines the vice-presidential selection process and campaigns since 1976, and shows how those activities affect and/or are affected by the newly developed White House vice presidency. The book presents a comprehensive account of the vice presidency as the office has developed from Mondale to Biden. But The White House Vice Presidency is more than that; it also shows how a constitutional office can evolve through the repetition of accumulated precedents and demonstrates the critical role of political leadership in institutional development. In doing so, the book offers lessons that go far beyond the nation's second office, important as it now has become.

The manuscript is really well written." - Alice Flanagan, Flanagan Publishing Services "Mike Pickards style of writing reminds me both of Heinlein and early Phillip Dick. Unlike some science fiction books, the appendices were extremely helpful." - Wayne Allen Sallee, author The Frobs were merely curious about the inhabitants of the third planet orbiting around a distant sun. The natives were rumored to have unique attributes that the Frobzbians wanted to understand. At least, thats the way the mission started. But when Gerfnit the mission specialist, surgically altered to look like an Earthling child, decided it wanted to make a return visit after an enjoyable summer at camp, Earth suddenly drew the attention of several other planets and species, not all with friendly intentions. Now, both the planet Earth and Gerfnit were in grave danger as the visitor from Frobzb went from being camper and data collector to Earths self-appointed protector.

Book The Mousedriver Chronicles

Download or read book The Mousedriver Chronicles written by John Lusk and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2009-04-29 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When John Lusk and Kyle Harrison graduated from Wharton in 1999, nearly all of their entrepreneurially minded classmates set their sights on conquering the dot-com world. To the almost universal disdain of their friends and professors, these two turned down tempting job offers, borrowed money from friends and family, loaded up on credit card debt, and decided to start a single-product company to manufacture and market a computer mouse shaped like the head of a golf club. They watched enviously as nearly all of their friends became millionaires in the dot-com boom, but they persevered and forged their own path. To chart their progress and to keep themselves motivated against the odds, they kept a diary that recorded the realities of their everyday life as entrepreneurs. Out of their diary entries grew The MouseDriver Chronicles, an intimate, insightful, and often funny look into the minds of two entrepreneurs and how they brought a simple idea to market. From The MouseDriver Chronicles: "School was just about over, and the wondrous combination of brick-baking heat and relentless high humidity that defines summer in south Philadelphia wasn't too far off. We couldn't afford to wait around for it. We needed to blaze to San Francisco and get rolling. Fine. No problem. Except we didn't yet have an office in San Francisco. Or a place to live. Or MouseDrivers in stock. We had all our plans and ambition, but everything real about running a business was ahead of us. Immediately ahead."

Download or read book The POTUS Chronicles written by Robert Haught and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The POTUS Chronicles is a merry romp through some of the most eventful times in the nation's political history. It's a sometimes-bumpy roller coaster ride, "prudently recreating" with George H. W. Bush, wondering what's next for "Bubba" Bill Clinton and his co-president wife, and "misunderestimating" George "Dubya" Bush. Like pages from a reporter's notebook, satirical glimpses of three administrations are captured with the freshness of today's headlines. Besides presenting a breezy account of war and peace and partying at the dawn of a new century, the pages of The POTUS Chronicles contain answers to many questions that trouble the minds of conscientious citizens, such as: Which president had to prove his identity to a skeptical third-grader? What advice did the Bush dog, Millie, give the Clinton cat, Socks? Whose presidential inauguration involved an official road kill patrol? Who is the former first lady who revealed she has conversations with Eleanor Roosevelt? How did the White House staff react when a president choked on a pretzel? What happened to Dick Cheney after a Republican senator switched parties? Relive a memorable era in the nations capital as seen through the lens of a seasoned Washington observer, tongues in cheek.
