Since the Colonial period, it has been an important seaport for the mercantile trade and a harbor of inestimable value for naval vessels. In 1869, the navy opened the Naval Torpedo Station on Goat Island in Newport harbor. The Naval War College on Coasters Harbor Island and the Naval Training Station soon followed. The navy's Newport presence expanded through two world wars; in the 1940s, the U.S. Naval Operating Base included extensive facilities on both sides of Narragansett Bay. Today, Newport remains a site of naval training, research, and development. The prestigious Naval War College, the Naval Education and Training Center, and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center have kept the navy a leading Rhode Island and southeastern New England employer.

Book The Newport Naval Training Station

Download or read book The Newport Naval Training Station written by Federico Santi and published by Schiffer Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 19th century, at the site of an old asylum for the poor on Coaster's Harbor Island off the city of Newport, Rhode Island, local residents made a decision that would change American military history forever: they proposed that the 90-acre Island become a U.S. Naval Training Center. Postcards and other artifacts document physical changes over time, activities of enlisted trainees, and images of stationed ships. A detailed history unfolds through historical documents, 19th century newspapers, and detailed images. The metamorphosis of Newport, Rhode Island into today's vibrant city is revealed. Development of the Newport Naval Training Station, still in use as Naval Station Newport and The Navy War College, waxed and waned with political forces and both world wars. Postcard images show all facets of life on the base: from the mundane, like washing clothes, to the serious, like drilling, sham battles, artillery training, signal training, and life aboard the battleship USS Constellation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhode Island's contribution to World War II vastly exceeded its small size. Narragansett Bay was an armed camp dotted by army forts and navy facilities. They included the country's most important torpedo production and testing facilities at Newport and the Northeast's largest naval air station at Quonset Point. Three special, top-secret German POW camps were based in Narragansett and Jamestown. Meanwhile, Rhode Island workers from all over the state - including, for the first time, many women - manufactured military equipment and built warships, most notably the Liberty ships at Providence Shipyard. Authors from the Rhode Island history blog smallstatebighistory.com trace Rhode Island's outsized wartime role, from the scare of an enemy air raid after Pearl Harbor to the war's final German U-boat sunk off Point Judith.

Download or read book Perverts by Official Order written by Lawrence Murphy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-27 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This candid book documents for the first time the U.S. Navy’s use of entrapment in pursuit of homosexuals in and around Newport, Rhode Island, during the early twentieth century. This most extensive systematic persecution of gays in American history occurred with the approval of Navy Secretary Josephus Daniels and Assistant Secretary Franklin Roosevelt, as dozens of sailors were ordered to identify and even seduce gay men in order to report their names to the authorities. Noted historian Lawrence Murphy reveals the details of this sordid campaign that ultimately generated a national scandal and first raised issues of gay rights and governmental persecution of homosexuals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the history of one of the nation's most prestigious service schools in The Naval War College. It was appropriate that the U.S. Navy's pioneer training station and principal graduate college be established at Newport. Known as "The City by the Sea," Newport, Rhode Island, has a long history of maritime activity. As far back as the colonial period, Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay have always been safe and deep havens for naval as well as commercial shipping. In 1883, Commodore Stephen B. Luce established the Naval Training Station on Coaster's Harbor Island in Newport, which became the forerunner of the modern recruit stations for enlisted men in the U.S. Navy. The next year, in 1884, Luce established the Naval War College, the first professional naval education center of its kind in the world. It soon became the U.S. Navy's premier institution for professional studies of warfare, international law, and statesmanship relating to war and peace. Among others, Luce brought to the college Capt. Alfred Thayer Mahan, the naval historian whose book, The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1600-1783, and other works influenced naval thought throughout the world.
