In considering how best to do this, the Council resolved that they would from time to time issue a miscellaneous volume of such papers. This is the first. In preparing the several items of it for the press, I have had the able assistance of Mr. Corbett, who, fresh from his studies of Drake and Drake's successors, took charge of the 'Voyage to Cadiz, ' which, by itself, with its unique map and representations of early divisional flags, would make the volume noteworthy. For the editing of the other papers I am personally responsible, though I have unsparingly taxed the assistance of many friends to whom I have referred points of difficulty. To them and to the owners of the papers I return my warmest thanks for the gift - not to me, but to the Society, and through it to the country. I can hope that, now that it appears, it will win for me a ready forgiveness, bearing with it, as it does, the work of so many and such distinguished colleagues; to whom, as well as to the private owners of papers included in the volume, I venture, in the name of the Society, to offer my most hearty thanks. For myself, too, I would very sincerely thank the many kind friends who have assisted me in trying to solve some of the curious conundrums which have presented themselves - e.g.: 'les voiles embossees'; 'scipper thrum cappsons'; 'there's life in a musle yet' - phrases which, I am afraid, I have given some of them cause long to remember. It will be seen that in the first two articles, dating from the early sixteenth century, the custom of the Society has been departed from and the original spelling has been preserved. Where so many of the words and phrases are obsolete and their meaning uncertain, it would have been practically impossible to do otherwise: to attempt it, even, would have been incongruous. Gallop then began to double-load his duck-guns, and fire through the Sides of the pinnace; but, finding that the enemy was not to be dislodged in this way, he broke his vessel loose, and again made for the windward, preparatory to a third blow. As the sloop drew Off, four or five more Indians rushed from the cabin of the pinnace, and leaped overboard, but Shared the fate of their predecessors, being far from land.
