Book The Nature of Power Struggles

Download or read book The Nature of Power Struggles written by Montgomery Stewart and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daring, astute, and smart, The Nature of Power Struggles, is a powerfully revealing work of nonfiction. Author Montgomery Stewart examines our search for self and relationship and how it is often frustrated by competing beliefs, differing models of behavior, and our mixed motivations caused by fear and love. Stewart reveals the fragile nature of alliances that we create with others, along with the constant quest for fairness in our relationships in order to better understand this struggle. Within this framework, we are constantly dealing with how we all use our power to force, manipulate, and persuade others into action, and as a result, most individuals today are actively engaged in a struggle for power. This modern behavior by individuals and institutions drives how people commonly treat one another in various situations. With benchmark research and relevant case studies that highlight human dynamics in business, personal relationships, and cultural and religious expression, this rewarding expose shows how persons and groups historically struggle to get their footing in order to inevitably manipulate the system to get what they want. In twenty-four easy-to-read chapters with titles like "The Subjective Nature of Fairness," "Love, Respect, and Fear," and "Moving between Social and Economic Classes," the author illustrates the reasons why Americans continue to struggle in their pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness, and the factors that contribute to this struggle. Stewart makes great strides in explaining how people operate and navigate their world. Ultimately sparking meaningful dialogue about the elements of conflict, this text also examines the brick wall many Americans face when it comes to exercising their rights so that they might accept what is fueled by human nature and what it is they can control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind energy is often portrayed as a panacea for the environmental and political ills brought on by an overreliance on fossil fuels, but this characterization may ignore the impact wind farms have on the regions that host them. Power Struggles investigates the uneven allocation of risks and benefits in the relationship between the regions that produce this energy and those that consume it. Jaume Franquesa considers Spain, a country where wind now constitutes the main source of energy production. In particular, he looks at the Southern Catalonia region, which has traditionally been a source of energy production through nuclear reactors, dams, oil refineries, and gas and electrical lines. Despite providing energy that runs the country, the region is still forced to the political and economic periphery as the power they produce is controlled by centralized, international Spanish corporations. Local resistance to wind farm installation in Southern Catalonia relies on the notion of dignity: the ability to live within one's means and according to one's own decisions. Power Struggles shows how, without careful attention, renewable energy production can reinforce patterns of exploitation even as it promises a fair and hopeful future.

Book Ecology and Power

Download or read book Ecology and Power written by Alf Hornborg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power and social inequality shape patterns of land use and resource management. This book explores this relationship from different perspectives, illuminating the complexity of interactions between human societies and nature. Most of the contributors use the perspective of "political ecology" as a point of departure, recognizing that human relations to the environment and human social relations are not separate phenomena but inextricably intertwined. What makes this volume unique is that it sets this approach in a trans-disciplinary, global, and historical framework.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power Struggles: Hydro Development and First Nations in Manitoba and Quebec examines the evolution of new agreements between First Nations and Inuit and the hydro corporations in Quebec and Manitoba, including the Wuskwatim Dam Project, Paix des Braves, and the Great Whale Project. In the 1970s, both provinces signed so-called “modern treaties” with First Nations for the development of large hydro projects in Aboriginal territories. In recent times, however, the two provinces have diverged in their implementation, and public opinion of these agreements has ranged from celebratory to outrage. Power Struggles brings together perspectives on these issues from both scholars and activists. In debating the relative merits and limits of these agreements, they raise a crucial question: Is Canada on the eve of a new relationship with First Nations, or do the same colonial attitudes that have long characterized Canadian-Aboriginal relations still prevail?

Download or read book A World of Struggle written by David Kennedy and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How today's unjust global order is shaped by uncertain expert knowledge—and how to fix it A World of Struggle reveals the role of expert knowledge in our political and economic life. As politicians, citizens, and experts engage one another on a technocratic terrain of irresolvable argument and uncertain knowledge, a world of astonishing inequality and injustice is born. In this provocative book, David Kennedy draws on his experience working with international lawyers, human rights advocates, policy professionals, economic development specialists, military lawyers, and humanitarian strategists to provide a unique insider's perspective on the complexities of global governance. He describes the conflicts, unexamined assumptions, and assertions of power and entitlement that lie at the center of expert rule. Kennedy explores the history of intellectual innovation by which experts developed a sophisticated legal vocabulary for global management strangely detached from its distributive consequences. At the center of expert rule is struggle: myriad everyday disputes in which expertise drifts free of its moorings in analytic rigor and observable fact. He proposes tools to model and contest expert work and concludes with an in-depth examination of modern law in warfare as an example of sophisticated expertise in action. Charting a major new direction in global governance at a moment when the international order is ready for change, this critically important book explains how we can harness expert knowledge to remake an unjust world.

Book The Power Struggles over the Post neoliberal Social Security System Reforms in Venezuela and Ecuador

Download or read book The Power Struggles over the Post neoliberal Social Security System Reforms in Venezuela and Ecuador written by Ezequiel Luis Bistoletti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-25 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book carries out a comparative analysis of the power struggles over the post-neoliberal social security reforms in Venezuela and Ecuador. The research breaks down why the social security system reform initiated by Hugo Chávez’ government in Venezuela has come down since its passing in 2002, whereas the social security system reform initiated by Rafael Correa’s government in Ecuador has come along in spite of the obstacles since 2007. All in all, the analysis determined that the struggles over the social security system reforms in both countries remarkably corresponded to each other with regard to their structural conditions, points of contention, and contending actors. In contrast, the analysis established substantial divergences regarding the ways in which the struggles over both reforms came about, due to the divergent development of the struggles for hegemony between government and opposition. These divergences finally brought about the indefinite stagnation of the reform in Venezuela and the advancement of subsequent partial reforms aimed at the universalization of social security in Ecuador.
