Download or read book The Essential Naturalist written by Michael H. Graham and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-04-15 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like nearly every area of scholarly inquiry today, the biological sciences are broken into increasingly narrow fields and subfields, its practitioners divided into ecologists, evolutionary biologists, taxonomists, paleontologists, and much more. But all these splintered pieces have their origins in the larger field of natural history—and in this era where climate change and relentless population growth are irrevocably altering the world around us, perhaps it’s time to step back and take a new, fresh look at the larger picture. The Essential Naturalist offers exactly that: a wide-ranging, eclectic collection of writings from more than eight centuries of observations of the natural world, from Leeuwenhoek to E. O. Wilson, from von Humboldt to Rachel Carson. Featuring commentaries by practicing scientists that offer personal accounts of the importance of the long tradition of natural history writing to their current research, the volume serves simultaneously as an overview of the field’s long history and as an inspirational starting point for new explorations, for trained scientists and amateur enthusiasts alike.

Download or read book Naturalists in the Field written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 1039 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interposed between the natural world in all its diversity and the edited form in which we encounter it in literature, imagery and the museum, lie the multiple practices of the naturalists in selecting, recording and preserving the specimens from which our world view is to be reconstituted. The factors that weigh at every stage are here dissected, analysed and set within a historical narrative that spans more than five centuries. During that era, every aspect evolved and changed, as engagement with nature moved from a speculative pursuit heavily influenced by classical scholarship to a systematic science, drawing on advanced theory and technology. Far from being neutrally objective, the process of representing nature is shown as fraught with constraint and compromise. With a Foreword by Sir David Attenborough Contributors are: Marie Addyman, Peter Barnard, Paul D. Brinkman, Ian Convery, Peter Davis, Felix Driver, Florike Egmond, Annemarie Jordan Gschwend, Geoff Hancock, Stephen Harris, Hanna Hodacs, Stuart Houston, Dominik Huenniger, Rob Huxley, Charlie Jarvis, Malgosia Nowak-Kemp, Shepard Krech III, Mark Lawley, Arthur Lucas, Marco Masseti, Geoff Moore, Pat Morris, Charles Nelson, Robert Peck, Helen Scales, Han F. Download or read book Illustrated Natural History written by J. G. Wood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 809 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Natural History The original text of the Rev. Dr. Woods Work on Natural History, well known as the most fascinating collection of description and anecdote ever published, was most wisely selected as a basis of a new issue, entitled "Our Living World." With the original text the writer has no connection, excepting so far as relates to American animals. Where the latter are treated the subject matter is revised, the latest information is added in full, and the classification and nomenclature now most approved is adopted. The "Compendium of Generic Distinctions," at the end of each volume, determines the classification adopted for the original work by the author. Besides this, we introduce at the end of each volume a table of classification, embracing the latest and best approved views, as applied to American Zoology. Thus, the reader finds, in addition to the charming descriptive text of Dr. Wood, instructive modern views of Zoology of peculiar service to the student. The classification adopted by the writer for the American subjects, is as follows:- For the Mammals, Prof. Flower, of London Zoological Society; for Birds, Robert Ridgway; Nomenclature of Birds of North America, Smithsonian Publication. Works of Dr. Coues and Baird, Brewer, and Ridgway have been freely utilized. For Fishes and Reptiles, the works of Jordan and Gilbert have proved of great service, well-nigh indispensable. The Invertebrate Animals having during the last ten years received especial attention from officers of the U. S. Fish Commission, we have availed ourselves of their valuable publications and Yearly Reports. The immense amount of original work done by Prof. Verrill and his assistants in the Commission, and the exceptional opportunities for such work accorded naturalists by the courtesy of Prof. Baird, Chief of the Commission, are highly appreciated. For the very liberal use made of the above-mentioned works, the editor of this edition would express his grateful acknowledgments. Rafinesque and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of Nature, 1820: Or Annual Synopsis of New Genera and Species of Animals, Plants, Etc; Discovered in North America The following lines shall contain many of my unpublished discoveries, made be tween'1816 and 1819. In the states of new-york, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, but sever al must still be delayed, as well as the figures. As my Ichthyology, or natural history ofthe Fishes of the Ohio, (containing 100 new species) is now under the press, the fishes of that river shall not be mentioned here. 'if I should occasion ally repeat the descriptions of some few new animals and plants, already commu micated to some societies, or journalists, the blame is their own. Why do they delay the publication of them and how am I to know if they ever received them, 8: mean to publish them Do they wish me to wait until somebody may follow the path which I have Opened, and anticipating my publications, deprive me of the fruit of my labor, (as it has been already attempted) and of the only reward I ever hope for my individual exertions, the esteem of the friends of knowledge I shall very seldom mention again those which have been already published, ex cept when they are only to be found in journals of very limited circulation; or when it will be needful to illustrate more carefully their characters or history. Very few Reptiles, Shells and Fossils will be introduced, although they include some of my most numerous discoveries; because I have already prepared several letters on our Erpetology for the American Journal of Science I am besides en' gaged in writing a general Conchology of the land shells and fresh water shells of the United States, and I have undertaken with Mr. John D. Clifi'ord to de scribe all the fossil remains of the western states. To those who may happen to regret the continual increase of} new genera and new species, I shall observe, that unless we detect and fix all the unknown genera and Species of beings existing in our country and on earth, we cannot extend and secure our researches after their properties, qualities and manners. Those who deplore the increase of natural knowledge, or knowledge of any kind, aregbelow our notice; they ought to be ranked with the enemies of mankind and. Of our moral powers. But from those who prefer to see new beings and materials ap pear under a handsome and prolix shape, I shall request to afford me the means of gratifying their peculiar taste, and when they do, 1 shall not fail to comply. Yet I shall add, that it is better for the, science and our purse, that many new objects should be introduced under a small compass, than when a few are scattered through amass of extraneous or compiled matter. My constant aim has been the extension of knowledge rather than the compilation of old materials. I wish that many naturalists and philosophers would always have the same object in view.
