Excerpt: ... receive such illustration as to make the Mediterranean basin and its contents more suggestive to the naturalist and the geologist than any other sea with which we are as yet acquainted. It is to such considerations as these that the present chapter will be mainly devoted. It will doubtless be a difficult matter with some naturalists to divest themselves so entirely of old prepossessions as to regard the fauna of this great internal sea merely as a subordinate and derivative one; such, however, it essentially is, and if we have heretofore viewed it otherwise, it has been owing doubtless to the circumstance that it has been so long known. It was on this account that with the rise of the present school of natural history investigation it became a typical region-- one to which reference was constantly made in all questions relating to the geographical distribution of European forms. Cuvier and Valenciennes, in their great work on Fishes, Deshayes, with respect to Molluscs, habitually speak of certain forms as ranging from the Mediterranean over a given region without, and so also with many others. This practice will probably be continued, nor will it be attended with any inconvenience, provided the expression does not mislead and induce the impression that the direction which an integral portion of the great Atlantic fauna has taken in its diffusion, was outwards from the Mediterranean, whereas it was the reverse. The Mediterranean Sea, viewed physically, is a vast lateral extension of the Atlantic, and its fauna is a full development of the most typical portion of the Lusitanian zone or province of that great ocean. In connection with its dependencies, terminating in the brackish waters of the sea of Azof, it repeats, and on a vast scale, ..

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Natural History of the Seas The survey Ship may use a score of nets attached at intervals to a tow-rope which descends perhaps to a depth of several miles. Yet another device - the grab - extracts samples of the sea-floor from any depth required. The contents of fish stomachs are also now largely relied upon to give an idea of the forms of life existing in many situations beyond the reach of either grab or deep-sea trawl net. Finally the last few years have produced that astonishing device the bathysphere - wa huge steel observation chamber which can be let down from a specially equipped Ship to a depth of half a mile and from which the scientist armed with a search-light looks out upon the world undreamed Of by the early naturalist. Book The History of the European Fauna Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of the European Fauna Classic Reprint written by Robert Francis Scharff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the European Fauna Our knowledge of the present and past fauna of Europe is as yet insufficient to indicate with precision the original homes of its component elements, but I hope that the lines of research laid down here, and the method of treatment adopted, will aid zoologists and geologists in collecting materials for a more comprehensive study of the history of our animals. I trust also that a fresh impulse will be given by the publication of this book to the study of the Geographical Distribution of Species. Collectors of Beetles, Butterflies, Shells, and Fossils may derive some useful hints by its perusal and thus direct their studies, so as to add, by accuracy in observation, to our knowledge of the former geographical revolutions which have moulded our islands and continents. To geographers, a survey of some of the more important changes in the distribution of land and water in past times - based upon the composition of our fauna - will be interesting. The subject, however, is a complex one. I have ventured to indicate a suitable method of treatment, and as such this attempt to elucidate the history of the European fauna should be received. Book The Unnatural History of the Sea

Download or read book The Unnatural History of the Sea written by Callum Roberts and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2009-01-05 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity can make short work of the oceans’ creatures. In 1741, hungry explorers discovered herds of Steller’s sea cow in the Bering Strait, and in less than thirty years, the amiable beast had been harpooned into extinction. It’s a classic story, but a key fact is often omitted. Bering Island was the last redoubt of a species that had been decimated by hunting and habitat loss years before the explorers set sail. As Callum M. Roberts reveals in The Unnatural History of the Sea, the oceans’ bounty didn’t disappear overnight. While today’s fishing industry is ruthlessly efficient, intense exploitation began not in the modern era, or even with the dawn of industrialization, but in the eleventh century in medieval Europe. Roberts explores this long and colorful history of commercial fishing, taking readers around the world and through the centuries to witness the transformation of the seas. Drawing on firsthand accounts of early explorers, pirates, merchants, fishers, and travelers, the book recreates the oceans of the past: waters teeming with whales, sea lions, sea otters, turtles, and giant fish. The abundance of marine life described by fifteenth century seafarers is almost unimaginable today, but Roberts both brings it alive and artfully traces its depletion. Collapsing fisheries, he shows, are simply the latest chapter in a long history of unfettered commercialization of the seas. The story does not end with an empty ocean. Instead, Roberts describes how we might restore the splendor and prosperity of the seas through smarter management of our resources and some simple restraint. From the coasts of Florida to New Zealand, marine reserves have fostered spectacular recovery of plants and animals to levels not seen in a century. They prove that history need not repeat itself: we can leave the oceans richer than we found them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mythic creature expert and author of Phoenix takes readers through a bestiary of sea monsters featured on the famous 16th century map Carta Marina. In the sixteenth century, sea serpents, giant man-eating lobsters, and other monsters were thought to swim the waters of Norther Europe, threatening seafarers who ventured too far from shore. Thankfully, Scandinavian mariners had Olaus Magnus, who in 1539 charted these fantastic marine animals in his influential map of the Nordic countries, the Carta Marina. In Sea Monsters, mythologist Joseph Nigg brings readers face-to-face with these creatures and other magnificent components of Magnus’s map. Nearly two meters wide in total, the map’s nine wood-block panels comprise the largest and first realistic portrayal of the region. But in addition to its important geographic significance, Magnus’s map goes beyond cartography to scenes both domestic and mystic. Close to shore, Magnus shows humans interacting with common sea life—boats struggling to stay afloat, merchants trading, children swimming, and fisherman pulling lines. But from the offshore deeps rise some of the most terrifying sea creatures imaginable—like sea swine, whales as large as islands, and the Kraken. In this book, Nigg draws on Magnus’s own text to further describe and illuminate these inventive scenes and to flesh out the stories of the monsters. Sea Monsters is a stunning tour of a world that still holds many secrets for us land dwellers, who will forever be fascinated by reports of giant squid and the real-life creatures of the deep that have proven to be as bizarre and otherworldly as we have imagined for centuries. It is a gorgeous guide for enthusiasts of maps, monsters, and the mythic. “[A] beautiful new exploration of the Carta Marina.”—Wired

Download or read book The Story of Life in the Seas Classic Reprint written by Sydney John Hickson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Life in the Seas The story of the life of animals and plants in the sea is one with so many aspects, that it is difficult to choose the points that may be included, and those that may be omitted from a book in tended for the general reader. To some the story of the food Fishes and the Whales is of the greatest interest; to others the beautiful shapes and colours of shells have a predominating fasci nation; and to those who have devoted them selves to geological study, the history of the animals that contribute to the formation of the reefs and the ocean-bed present features of spe cial attraction. To many, then, the perusal of my book must lead to disappointment, as no one of these aspects has been treated adequately; but if some new interest is awakened, some new train of thought quickened into life, one of the objects I had in view will have been gained. Book On Great Waters Classic Reprint

Download or read book On Great Waters Classic Reprint written by Frank H. Shaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Great Waters IT is not felt that any apology is needed in presenting to the public a simple narrative of the sea and the men who use it. Those who lived the life of hardship and stress such as is depicted inadequately in the following pages, were amongst the men who carried food to hungry mouths during almost five critical years in the world's history, when an unscrupulous enemy had counted on national hunger as its chiefest ally. Presently, when values are adjusted, and the great perspective of the European War is correctly laid out before the eyes of the world, it will be seen that without the British Merchant Service a different tale had been told. All through those years of inhumanity the Red Ensign kept the seas undaunted. More than fifteen thousand of such men as are feebly pictured within the pages of this book laid down their lives, far from the braying of trumpets and the Haunting of silken banners, in order that the swift-weaving shuttles of the Empire's looms might play their part in the con struction of the great fabric of victory.
