Book The Natural History of Mexican Rattlesnakes Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Natural History of Mexican Rattlesnakes Classic Reprint written by Barry L. Armstrong and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Mexican Rattlesnakes Beginning in November, 1966, studies on rattlesnakes (genera Crotalus and Sistrurus) and other pit Vipers were initiated at the Dallas Zoo which included techniques for maintenance and disease treatments, in conjunction with Observations on captive and wild populations. Maintenance techniques and disease treatments have been published in an earlier contribution. The results of our studies on the ecology and natural history of Mexican rattlesnakes are contained in the present account. Since numerous behavioral sequences were difficult to record in the field, many rattlesnakes were maintained in the laboratory. Over one hundred and twenty-five captive individuals, comprising over 50 taxa (including forms indigenous to the United States) were avail able for study. We have attempted to Show the value of a multifaceted ap proach to the study of a body of organisms by beginning with field Observations as a basis for understanding, followed by maintenance in the captive state whereupon specimens can be placed upon death in a systematic museum collection. This arrangement allows an investigator to examine various aspects of an animal's being by recording data which would be virtually impossible to record in the field. Further, this combined approach maximized our abili ties as one Of us is somewhat incompetent in the field and the other is an erratic animal keeper. Book Maintenance of Rattlesnakes in Captivity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Maintenance of Rattlesnakes in Captivity Classic Reprint written by James Bernard Murphy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maintenance of Rattlesnakes in Captivity Beginning in November 1966, a multifaceted approach for the investigation of rattlesnakes (genera Crotalus and Sistrurus) and other pit vipers was initiated at the Dallas Zoo by using a combina tion of field and captive observations. Our observations concerning the ecology and natural history of wild rattlesnakes were utilized as a basis in order to successfully maintain captive Specimens. Further, many of the behavioral components found in rattlesnakes were not readily observable in the field but could be seen in captiv ity. As our studies continued, it became apparent that the continua tion of a captive colony of rattlesnakes, roughly numbering 50 taxa and 125 individuals, required Specialized techniques. To that end, we searched the literature dealing with reptilian husbandry, espe cially concerning rattlesnakes. In addition, we consulted with col leagues who had successfully maintained these Ophidians. Since reproductive and captive propagation was a consideration, we tried to develop a format with that objective in mind. The results of our studies are contained in this account and a companion volume which deals with the ecology and natural history of 45 taxa of Mexican rattlesnakes. This present account is divided into two parts; the first covers successful husbandry techniques, and the second surveys organisms causing pathogenicity, recommenda tions for treatment and appropriate medical procedures. It is obvious that many of these techniques can be applied on a larger scale to the captive maintenance of a considerable number of reptile species besides rattlesnakes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of Batrachians and Reptiles of Central America and Mexico This work (bulletin No. 32) is the forty-second of a series of papers intended to illustrate the collections of natural history and ethnology belonging to the United States, and constituting the National Museum, of which the Smithsonian Institution was placed in charge by the act of Congress of August 10, 1846. It has been prepared at the request of the Institution, and printed by authority of the honorable Secretary of the Interior. The publications of the National Museum consist of two series - the Bulletins, of which this is No. 32, in continuous series, and the Proceed ings, of which the ninth volume is now in press. The volumes of Proceedings are printed, signature by signature, each issue having its own date, and a small edition of each signature is dis tributed to libraries promptly after its publication. From time to time the publications of the Museum which have been issued separately are combined together and issued as volumes of the Miscellaneous Collections. These are struck off from the stereotype plates from which the first edition was printed, and in this form are distributed by the Smithsonian Institution to libraries and scientific societies throughout the world. Volume 13 of these collections includes Bulletins 1 to 10, inclusive; volume 19, volumes 1 and 2 of the Proceed ings; volume 22, volumes 3 and 4 of the Proceedings; and volume 23, Bulletins 11 to 15, inclusive. This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Annotated Checklist and Key to the Amphibia of Mexico In preparing this summary we have followed, with some exceptions, the style of our Annotated Checklist and Key to the Snakes of Mexico. 2 The present account differs chiefly in the natural arrange ment of the species and in the distribution of the keys, Which instead of being united are scattered through the list in appropriate places. The keys are to transformed specimens, except where otherwise indicated, since the larvae are too incompletely known to permit the construction of useful keys. Likewise the eggs of relatively few forms are known. Juvenile transformed specimens will not be identifiable in all cases, since important characters may not be evident in them.
