Book The Natural History of Mexican Rattlesnakes Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Natural History of Mexican Rattlesnakes Classic Reprint written by Barry L. Armstrong and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Mexican Rattlesnakes Beginning in November, 1966, studies on rattlesnakes (genera Crotalus and Sistrurus) and other pit Vipers were initiated at the Dallas Zoo which included techniques for maintenance and disease treatments, in conjunction with Observations on captive and wild populations. Maintenance techniques and disease treatments have been published in an earlier contribution. The results of our studies on the ecology and natural history of Mexican rattlesnakes are contained in the present account. Since numerous behavioral sequences were difficult to record in the field, many rattlesnakes were maintained in the laboratory. Over one hundred and twenty-five captive individuals, comprising over 50 taxa (including forms indigenous to the United States) were avail able for study. We have attempted to Show the value of a multifaceted ap proach to the study of a body of organisms by beginning with field Observations as a basis for understanding, followed by maintenance in the captive state whereupon specimens can be placed upon death in a systematic museum collection. This arrangement allows an investigator to examine various aspects of an animal's being by recording data which would be virtually impossible to record in the field. Further, this combined approach maximized our abili ties as one Of us is somewhat incompetent in the field and the other is an erratic animal keeper. Book Travels and Researches in Native North America 1882 1883

Download or read book Travels and Researches in Native North America 1882 1883 written by Herman Frederik Carel Kate and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important but little-known account of several southwestern tribes has heretofore been available only in the author's native Dutch. Ten Kate's studies of the Pima, Hopi, Apache, and Zuni people are especially noteworthy for their information on tribal cultures. He observed firsthand and sought out informants willing to elaborate on Indian games and sports and on social organization and myths of religious significance. He was particularly interested in the position of women and treatment of children and admired the natives' attitudes on these matters more than did other early anthropologists. His best material is from his extended stay at Zuni, where he and Frank Hamilton Cushing became lifelong friends. His observations on the impact of whites on Indian cultures constitute valuable documentation of the dilution of native life-styles. Although he is not as well known as contemporaries like Bandelier, Bourke, and Matthews, ten Kate's work remains influential in the field after more than 120 years.

Book River of Spirits A Natural History of New Mexico s Las Animas Creek

Download or read book River of Spirits A Natural History of New Mexico s Las Animas Creek written by Edited by Harley G. Shaw, Photographs by Matilde Holzwarth, Foreword by Todd Wilkinson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originating high in New Mexico's mysterious Black Range and flowing to the Rio Grande amid contorted, ghost-like sycamores, Las Animas Creek remains one of the least accessible landscapes in the nation. The watershed is best known as the site of Apache chief Victorio's last major battle with the U.S. Cavalry before his retreat and ultimate defeat by the Mexican army. Despite its geographic isolation, the watershed remains closely linked with the history of nearby Kingston, Hillsboro and Caballo. Once home to New Mexico's last grizzly, Las Animas sustains a diverse range of native plants and wild animals, including bison, prairie dogs and mountain lions, as well as a host of endangered species. Aldo Leopold Wilderness and Ted Turner's Ladder Ranch ensure it remains Rio de las Animas, the "River of Spirits." Wildlife research biologist Harley G. Shaw compiles a human and natural history of this remote ecosystem.

Book excerpt: From the legendary, fear-inspiring Western Diamondback rattlesnake to the tiny, harmless Plains blind snake, Texas has a greater diversity of snake species than any other state in the country. Recognizing the public's need for a complete guide to identifying and understanding Texas' snakes, two of the state's most respected herpetologists have joined forces to create this definitive reference to all 109 species and sub-species of Texas snakes. Well-written species accounts describe each snake's appearance, lookalikes, size, habitat, behavior, feeding, and reproduction. The authors also include color photos and finely detailed line drawings to aid field identification, along with accurate range maps, a checklist of Texas snakes, a key to the species, and a brief discussion of classification and taxonomy. The authors round out this volume with essays on snake myths and misinformation, snakebite and its prevention, conservation, Texas biotic provinces, and a brief history of Texas herpetology.
