Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Chautauqua The material in this little book is the outgrowth of ten years' natural history study and teaching in the Chautauqua region. The material is assembled in this form with the hope that it may be useful to the increasing number of nature-stu dents who are actively interested in the rich and beautiful natural background of Chautauqua. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chautauqua Publications: An Historical and Bibliographical Guide A principal obstacle barring the way to fruitful study of Chautauqua by men trained in the general field of American history has been the lack of an adequate guide to the source materials. Files of Chautauqua news papers and periodicals, and collections of Chautauqua programs, catalogs, reports, and other pamphlets are essential, yet the location, availability, and even the existence of such materials have never been made known to scholars generally. The books issued by the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle are scattered through most large libraries, but they are not classified together. And the only check-list of C. L. S. C. Books that has been compiled recently was a four-page leaflet, bristling with inaccuracies, and unobtainable today. The other publications of Chautauqua have not been. Listed in any manner, adequate or inadequate. The sixtieth anniversary of Chautauqua and the meeting here of the New York State Historical Association - events of the present summer naturally direct attention to Chautauqua's past, and make this a fitting time to present a bibliography of the books, periodicals, and other printed records of the Institution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Paper About Chautauqua and Its Teachings Knowing that there is an increasing desire to understand the Chautauqua idea and aim which has taken captive the hearts of many thousand pilgrims who for ten consecutive summers have journeyed to this Mecca, I will attempt in these few pages to give some prominent features of this unique assembly. It is an educational movement, combining sacred and secular knowledge, taking the teachings and doctrines of the Holy Bible as the chief corner stone. In other words, Chautauqua seeks to establish the relation of Christianity and of culture as they appear in our individual as well as in the national life. All persons are concerned in that which shapes the life, the destiny and the greatness of the nation, of which we all form a part. This great movement, which has caused from every part of the wide world the inquiry, "What is this Chautauqua?" Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Chautauqua County, New York, From Its First Settlement to the Present Time: With Numerous Biographical and Family Sketches After the lapse of a period much longer than was anticipated, the writer offers to the public the result of his protracted labors. Although he has no assurance that the work will fully meet the expectations of all for whom it. Has been written, he indulges the hope that it will receive a good measure of the popular favor. But how much soever it may fall short of universal commendation, he has the satisfaction to believe, that its supposed defects will not be ascribed to any lack of effort, on his part, to fulfill the pledge of his best endeavors to produce a history which should meet the expectations of the people, and reflect honor upon the county. This has certainly been his paramount object, irre spective of the time deemed necessary for its accomplishment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of Chautauqua County: An Address Delivered Before the Chautauqua Society of History and Natural Science at Its Semi-Annual Meeting Held in Jamestown, January 29, 1885 In a paper of this character it is of course impossible to give any extended description of our various species of birds, or their habits, songs, plumage, migration. Nests and eggs, or to more than touch upon the numerous other interesting branches of the subject. I shall endeavor to do little else than present a list of such birds as have actually come under my observation in the course of considerable rambling about the fields and forests of the central part of the county, during several years past. This will comprise just 150 species, which I think embraces all that are in any degree common in the locality mentioned. There are a number of other species whose occasional presence is probable and whose names could doubtless be safely added, but having as yet never actually met with them, I prefer to wait till I can speak of them authoritatively. This is offered only in the absence of more complete data. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History the United States: Written for the Chautauqua Reading Circles Of the Revolution, of its causes, its methods, and its results, we certainly know much more than Judge Marshall knew, or even George Washington, or any of the men of their times. The governments in possession of European archives are no longer coy about opening to students the papers in their pos session. We know, for instance, that George the Third was his own enemy, and the enemy of Great Britain. We know something of the divided councils of England, and of the causes which led to division; of the policies of France and Spain and the other countries of Europe. We are able to make a study much more complete than was in the power of Mr. Botta, Mr. Grahame, Judge Marshall, or any other of the earlier historians. Book excerpt: Excerpt from About Chautauqua: As an Idea, as a Power, and as a Place Among the signs of the times the most important tendency which exists is that which is reaching toward a more liberal and universal education for the masses. With the various move ments organized, it must be apparent to all thoughtful observers that not one has attained to such importance as that known and embraced in the Chautauqua Idea, for it is a practical scheme, reaching all classes and conditions alike, who will ao cept of its benefits. In the pages of this Second Edition, enlarged, of this book, which is, as the title indicates, written to tell something about the mighty movement which in its twelve years of existence has wielded such a delightful in uence, the attempt has not been made to give the entire history of the several depart nicuts, but brie y to allude to them in the order of their development from the primitive idea. Having been an ardent believer in the miss10n of Chautauqua from its first days, and. By constant attendance upon the summer assemblies through their entire sessions, the author has had unusual opportunities to know whereof she writes. The divisions of topics are, respectively, Chautauqua as an idea, as a power, and as a place, besides some miscellaneous subjects. To those persons who generously gave permission to select from their own writings material that was needed in addition to her own knowledge, the writer expresses in this public manner earnest thanks! And, now, my book, go forth on your mission to all unknown readers, that they may not be as the heath in the desert, and see not when good cometh l E. R.
